Colts sign 3rd round pick Jerraud Powers, CB from Auburn

Tip to hoosier in sodak for the heads up. Mike Chappell reports that the Colts have signed 2009 3rd round draft pick Jerraud Powers. Terms of the deal are currently not available, according to Chappell. Powers was drafted out of Auburn, and has a chance to compete with Tim Jennings and others for the nickel back spot.

But...

In all seriousness, isn’t it a little uncommon to sign a third round pick prior to the later round guys?

I know there is no hard and fast rule.

But isn’t it generally easier to sign 6th and 7th round guys?

they ususally come so close together for Indy

that you can throw the usual order away.

That's big talk for a little guy,

Agreed

It seems like they all get signed in a 2-3 day span with us. So Powers is just a couple days ahead of the power curve. Maybe his agent had vacation plans for later this week. My prediction: the Colts announce 2 signings each on Thurs, Fri, and Sat.

(oh, and Michael Vick won’t be one of them)

I wonder if Polian considers who a potential draft pick’s agent is before choosing him?

Drew Rosenhaus anybody?

LIke Scott Boras in MLB, there are some agents I’d keep away from if I was a player or GM.

I was wondering when they would start signing guys

Polian's strategy

Maybe he just wanted to get this third round pick signed before he retired. Bill learns from experience.

Nice one!

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: The World Series of Poker is finally back on ESPN starting this week (Tuesday nights). To commerate the event, here's a video of my favorite poker player at his best.

Seems like

Polian always gets the third-rounders first.

Anyway, I’m so damn excited, I just want to see Brown inked.

Only 4 first rounders have signed

Stafford, Sanchez, Mack, and Hood.

I’m guessing this weekend there will be a flurry of signings, including Brown.

So, is this guy going to be good? All I remember reading about him is that he was projected as a late rounder (and we took him in the 3rd round) and that he’s 5’9 with 4.48 40-yd dash speed… hopefully he’s got some intangibles, he got 2 INTs last year, 4 the year before at Auburn… not bad I guess.

I'm guessing the contract is 4 years worth 2.425mil with a 695K signing bonus

reasoning in a post coming tonight (just getting on the record in case the details come out before then).

That's big talk for a little guy,

I'm hoping Powers is better than Jennings in coverage

Neither of them are great tacklers and they don’t have good size, but hopefully Powers is better in coverage and someone can knock Jennings out of the nickelback spot.

Powers may be a pleasant surprise in tackling…
