There is no blog war with 18to88

I decided to make this a FanPost because (as I have done in the past) this is more for our community; not necessarily an article that needs to be blasted all over Yahoo, CBS Sports, and Google.

Well, if you head to 18to88, you'll see that Deshawn Zombie doesn't like it when one of his loyal readers (namely, me) criticizes some of his editorial choices:

We are Colts centric, but I hate offseason blather.  Personally, I don't find it that all that interesting.

So...We  blog about other stuff.  As much as possible.   If BBS or anyone else doesn't like it, don't read it.   I could care less what annoys BBS.

We write for us.  We always have.  I'm trying to entertain one person:  my brother.

While this kind of response disappoints me, I'm not mad or pissed at them. My disappointment stems from my expectations. If you Google "Denver Broncos blog" or "Washington Redskins blog" you will see a massive list of sites. Folks, the Broncos and the Redskins have not been very successful football teams for almost a decade. Yet, their fan presence on the net and in the blogosphere is MASSIVE. Meanwhile, the Colts sport (arguably) the best team this decade, and we've only got only two serious Colts blogs: Stampede Blue and Indy Football Report.

That depresses the hell outta me.

When a blog like 18to88 basically tells me they hate covering the Colts during the off-season, they aren't a serious Colts blog anymore. Despite Deshawn's claim, they are most certainly not "Colts centric." When you don't think covering the team for 75% of the calendar year is interesting or important, your blog's content is not centered around that team. From January to September, 18to88 offers very little for Colts fans, and they've essentially told us that if we don't like it we can screw off.

Again, if that's the editorial decision of 18to88, that's fine. I don't "hate" them for that nor do I wish to start bashing them the way I do other media that disappoints me. There is no "blog war" here. But, as a one-time daily reader of 18to88, I'm upset that they have such disdain for off-season coverage. They also don't seem to enjoy reader criticism all that much. We Colts fans have such limited presence on the web when it comes to the number of sites. As someone who takes a lot of pride in being a Colts fan, this frustrates me.

Hopefully, more Colts blogs and dedicated sites will start popping up with dedicated writers who are willing to cover the team 365 a year. Right now, 18to88 is not such a site, and that's a shame. I beg them to re-consider. Perhaps they could bring on board a writer who is willing to cover the Colts during the off-season the way I brought shake n bake, mgrex03, ColtsHomer, and others on board.

As always, I encourage each of you to blog, blog, and BLOG some more. Make your own blogs. Create your own content. I receive roughly 10,000 hits a day during the off-season. That peaks to about 50,000 a day during the regular season. I try VERY hard to take those hits and push them to other great sites. I create weekly "Luke Link" lists that push you (the readers) to sites and stories that are cool. We are a community of fans. I do not "horde" my readers and I do not believe in blog competition. If you are thinking about making a blog, but are worried no one will care about it, don't worry. I am more than happy to link to your stuff.

All I ask in return is that you stick with it. Blogging is a passion, not a hobby. And we Colts fans need more passionate Colts blogs on the net.

For all of you sick of me talking about other blogs, relax. This is the last time I'll bring this subject up, for a while at least. Thanks, as always, for reading my ramblings.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

They DO offseason coverage

They just did a fantastic podcast wrapping the offseason. I highly recommend it.

Exactly. They do.

Besides the sound bite journalism for sensationalism expressed here, an honest reader there would discover that they have year round content for the Colts. They just don’t feel that they should be put in a box, or make up desperate story lines. I enjoy the writing over there immensely. I have always thought that it is the best written Colts blog anywhere.

This is ridiculous. If 18to88 is guilty of anything contributing to a “war”, it was their defense of the Star from another BBS attack that they felt was unmerited. Since then, this has been a retaliatory slam against them and an attack on the entire premise of their site. What’s the deal?

"I have always thought that it is the best written Colts blog anywhere."

I actually prefer Phil B’s blog to any others, but that’s just personal preferance.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

I don't understand

What happened to expressing your opinion, without it being a “slam”? BBS wishes 18to88 is something it professes to be, but is not. Sometimes, I wish the same. I absolutely LOVE 18to88’s Colts coverage, but I PERSONALLY feel that seeing talk about a baseball team in Cincinnati under that name is a shame. Their Red’s coverage is actually pithy and entertaining, but I would be very disappointed if I searched for “Colts blog” in Google and was led to their site right now. The Zombie brothers seem like great guys that write well, but some people wish they wrote more about 18 (and I guess still 88) since that is the name of their blog, and MVN hired them ostensibly to be their Colts bloggers.

If you don’t agree with BBS, great. You don’t have to. But stop stepping up the rhetoric by claiming that BBS is "slam"ming 18to88. I personally admire BBS’ efforts (as well as all the other writers) to create some meaningful Colts content during the Offseason. I only passionately follow the NFL. I like CFB, watch the Pacers and the NBA with mild interest, and am pretty “meh” about MLB. I desperately crave anything about the Colts and the NFL. And I am far from the only one.

I will continue to read 18to88 every week, but I don’t read it every day because there is not that much content there for me usually. That is their prerogative, and I applaud them for doing what they enjoy. If they wanted to make a living from blogging and wanted to attract more people like me to their readership, they would change their focus. But, alas, that is not their goal here. And I, and I believe BBS as well, respect their choice but have to call a spade a spade. 18to88 is not a Colts blog in the sense that SB or IFR are. And that doesn’t make the Zombie’s worse people, bloggers, or Colts fans. That just makes them bloggers who like to blog about the Colts mainly during the season, and the Reds and IRL racing and soccer during the off-season. And that’s just fine.

Stepping up the rhetoric?

Do you read everything on this site? Or on the last two articles on this topic?

I don’t understand. What happened to expressing your opinion without it being a “stepping up of the rhetoric”? Is that a one way road? You honestly have no problem with BBS’ comments in these last articles, but you have issue with my reply? Okay then.

I have written a lengthy answer on this main topic here that I was gonna reply to you, but I saved it to my computer (way too long to re-write) so I can sleep on it and decide later on Sunday to post it or not. So meanwhile, good night.

No

Because, BBS writes a post saying specifically “There is no blog war with 18to88” and you call it a “slam”. It is not a slam to say that you don’t think they are a “Colts Centric” blog. He indicted neither their skill, talent, nor passion for the Colts. There was no slam. Calling it such is raising the rhetoric(which is a term I used specifically because of the stupid “Blog War” concept). It is what it is, but I fail how you even call it a reproach, let alone a slam.

I am not going to post that reply.

First, it’s tooooo long. Second, I don’t like the spirit of it or that I wrote it in. I may revise it for the next main article on here that blasts some group with unnecessary venom. This one wasn’t that big of a deal by comparison of others. Just my opinion, of course.

Let me just say this and leave it alone before this goes any further than it has. When I go to a Colts site, I look for Colts info as well. I am way too die hard NFL, and I don’t care as much about other sports, though I do care some. I log on looking for Colts news to each of these sites. When I check 18TO88, I go in understanding that there may be other topics discussed. I may not read it, or just scan it for the Colts links. Or I may choose to enjoy it all. But my passion is Colts, and that’s what draws me there. The other stuff is fine, as it is their site, and they are great writers who write for what they are passionate about. Which happens to be more things than I am. But they do give me some great Colts content, and I go there for it.

Same with Stampede Blue. I come here for Colts content. Sometimes I get on here and find stuff that I don’t care to read. Like these articles about another Colts site and its shortcomings. To me, that does nothing to add to the quality of this site, and it is not a part of its charm. There have been many times where I have logged on just to find some story that ticked off the fans of another team with rude words and strong statements. That is not why I come here, anymore than I go to the other site for racing news. I want the latest Colts stuff, and I want some pleasant interaction with Colts fans as we discuss things amongst ourselves. I always cringe at the provocative stuff and hope that we haven’t turned everyone else off to our team as a trade for more viewer “hits” to the site. I don’t want us to be the new Patriots fans of the NFL, where everyone isn’t happy for us when we win as we rub their face in it, and they’re glad when we lose as we are too smug to them. You’ve been around these parts awhile, you have to know this has happened plenty, though it has also gotten much better as of late.

I don’t find an article or two about what is wrong with a sister blog to be any better reading than an article on the Cincinnati Reds. In fact, I find it worse. That’s just my opinion. BBS shared his. You give him room to opine on what is wrong with the content of another blog in his opinion, then I’d like the same liberty to comment on what’s wrong with some articles on this one occasionally in mine. That is all.

Now, does anybody have any Colts news?

We seem to have a basic human need to argue. Sometimes about the stuff that nobody else in their right mind would care about. So I personally am enjoying the back and forth ranting. It’s highly entertaining on a rainy day.

Just wondering....

what the possible argument could be that the Colts were the best team this decade. I respect the Colts as a terrific football team, but…..

My response is to wait.

There are still 2 more years left in this decade. Peyton could easily win 1 or both Super Bowls in that time. After 2 years, bring this issue back up, and then we’ll talk.

In the last month...

18to88 has posted 30 times.

20 of those posts were directly related to the Colts and the NFL.

Can anyone explain to me how that is not “Colts centric?”

Can anyone explain how we offer “very little” for Colts fans?

This post is false and intentionally misleading.

Counter

Because within those posts, you re-edited the content to include your opinions about the Reds, MLB, NBA, Auto-racing, and soccer. In fact sometimes you will start a post with only a topic unrelated to the Colts and then later (sometimes a day or two later) you’ll add a line at the end that has nothing to do with the post topic, but mentions something about the Colts. This is usually a link to an article.

And example of what I’m talking about is this. You write an initial topic about Joey Votto only to throw in links later about the Pacers, Colts, and an article from Slate magazine about “the viewers’ perception of balls and strikes.”

Again, the name of your blog is 18to88, but your content is all over the place. I mean, it’s one thing to occasionally veer off topic, but with you its a daily thing. If you are “Colts-centered,” that to me means you are Colts first, Colts second, and Colts last. Colts, Colts, Colts all the time. Your site is not Colts centered when the initial topic starts with Joey Vitto, veers to Tyler Hansbrough, and ends up talking about Tarik Glenn.

The post isn’t false or intentionally misleading. You just sound paranoid when you say silly things like that. This is one reader (me) offering you (the site manager) constructive criticism. But, then again, you don’t seem to care what your readers think about your blog. Your quote:

If BBS or anyone else doesn’t like it, don’t read it. I could care less what annoys BBS.

We write for us. We always have. I’m trying to entertain one person: my brother.Again, that’s a pretty douchey thing to say to one of your most consistent readers, but whatever. If I haven’t convinced you that your site does not read like a Colts-centered site by now, I likely never will.

Nope, sorry

I only counted posts that were about the Colts/NFL in the 70%.

The actual number of times we talk about the Colts was more than that, because as you mentioned, we refer to them on a daily basis.

Try again.

To be clear

The specific post he linked to: I told you he good…did NOT count toward the 70% That was counted as a baseball post.

I only counted posts where the Colts or the NFL (like my rant on Phil Rivers) were the subject of the post.

by deshawn zombie on Jul 12, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And again Zombie

A Colts blog that has only 70% of its content directed at the Colts is not a blog “centered” on the Colts. A Colts blog covers the Colts 100% of the time. That means that 30% of your site’s content has nothing to do with the team. As you said in another discussion, 50% of your content in May was focused on the Indy 500.

So again, I don’t think you’re being very rational or accurate with this. No one is saying you don’t cover the Colts. I have no idea where you got that. What people are saying is you are not FOCUSED on the Colts, let alone centered on them.

I suppose we'll let everyone else decide that point

You don’t get to set those definitions.

No where is it written that a Colts blog has to talk about the Colts 100% of the time. The only one who thinks that is you.

Colts fans care about other things. We write about those other things. I’d say 70% is Colts-centric. Most people would. You are the only person who has ever said differently.

The point is

That since June 6th, 19 of your site’s posts were about the Colts while 12 focused on other sports. In the month of May, 50% of your site’s content focused on the Indy 500. You can say whatever you want man, but your numbers are totally inaccurate and do not reflect what you want them to reflect. That’s an editorial choice on your part, and that’s fine. It’s your blog.

But that is not Colts-centered. Them’s the facts. Comments for this are now locked as you are hijacking this thing using inaccurate information.

By the way...

Here’s the break down of Colts stories by month. The second number is the total of all other posts related to baseball, golf, racing, the movies, or the birth of my daughter.

February: 41 to 3
March: 20 to 11
April: 15 to 10
May 19 to 18
June/July: 24 to 11

Again, in every month, at least half the stories were Colts related. The over all percentage of Colts stories was 69%.

Seriously, if you are going to mouth off, at least do some math first.

Very illuminating

I can tell you. as someone who does love your blog(as I’ve said time and again), that this is surprising. Not just your Colts article numbers, but the overall production. I have to commend you guys for just putting out that much content by your lonesome.

And then again, I guess 69% is enough to make the claim to “Colts Centric”, but it definitely is low enough where the coverage of other things should be mentioned in the by-line or title of your site.

And please deshawn, that is just my opinion. NO ONE here is disparaging your blog qua blog. It is entertaining, well written, and often very insightful. I personally hope we can all put this silly argument behind us and move on.

That's fine

But I found the words:

“they aren’t a serious Colts blog anymore. Despite Deshawn’s claim, they are most certainly not “Colts centric,”

both offensive and insulting. I shared my thoughts with BBS personally. I have no need to rehash it here. I just felt the need to defend our record.

I’m not sure where or how we could have been more clear about the purpose and driving values of 18to88.com. It’s on our Authors page. It was in our first post.

We are Colts first. We are Colts most. We are not and never will be Colts only.

I never write about anything else at the expense of the Colts, but when there is nothing else to say about the Horse, we talk about other things we are interested in. I do not and will not apologize or change from that.

BBS’s claims were wrong. That’s all I have to say.

If I’d known you were going to act this childish about this, I likely wouldn’t have written anything. If you idea of a Colts “story” is writing a post about Joey Votto and then, later one, throwing in an article link about Tarik Glenn, that does not help prove your point.
