Good for Favre

I will be one of the few and say, “Good for Favre!” I just hope that physically he is prepared to do this, but I wish him all the luck in the world.

A few years back I spoke to a former NFL player about retiring and how hard it is on a lot of guys. Most guys can never achieve anything close to what they did in the NFL. Its something incredibly painful to walk away from. I don’t blame Favre for trying to go out on top. I wouldn’t want my career to end the way it did with the Jets/Packers. Its annoying that this story gets played so much, but seriously, I hope Favre does well!

by MasterRWayne on Aug 18, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

big surprise

I disagree.

He’s free to do what he wants with his career, but that doesn’t mean I have to like him or respect him after the way he’s handled himself over this.

It's shocking what you can miss sometimes. The amazing color changing card trick.

right

He probably planned this all along. How incredibly selfish, skipping camp like that and basically toying with them.

What sickens me is that you or I could’ve gone 5-0 to start the season with that schedule, so now we’ll have to hear about how awesome Favre is til at least mid-October. Vomit.

by willyduer on Aug 18, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

What?!

Oh what did Favre do Shake? Did he bang your mom or something? The guy wants to play so let him play. All the more power to him. He clearly wanted to play for the Vikings last year, but Packer management “poisoned pilled” him. It was kind of a dick move on their part, but now Favre has a chance to play for the Vikings. Favre wins. Packers win and Aaron Rodgers wins. Hurray! Whats the big f’ing deal?

It just amazes me how much people fall hook, line and sinker for the Media narrative on things. They build people up just to viciously tear them down. Its quite pathetic.

I wish Favre all the best I just question whether his arm can stand 16 regular season games. I think the Vikings would do well to have Rosenfels start 4-5 games during the regular season. That way they can ensure Favre is rested for the playoffs.

by MasterRWayne on Aug 18, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

How was it a "dick" move?

Not allowing Favre to sign w/ Minnesota? If you owned his contract would you allow him to play for a team that was in direct competition w/ you for a playoff spot? Hell no you wouldn’t! He’s the one who wanted to sign the big $$ multi-year contract at the end of his career. When you sign a contract you have to take the good with the bad. That’s just the way it is. There’s no crying about it later.

"Flying blind on a rocket cycle?" -Vultan, from the movie "Flash Gordon", for no particular reason...

by peytonsurdaddy on Aug 18, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a Dick move

Favre issue wasn’t about money or a big contract. His signing a 1 year deal with the Vikings right now. The Packers wanted to go with Rodgers which was the smart move. I’d feel the same way, but don’t poison pill the guy who played his guts out for you. Its business I know so its all “fair,” but its still kind of dickish. I don’t blame Favre for being mad at Packers management because id feel the same way too. Both parties didn’t handle the whole thing well last year.

Favre wants to play for the Vikings and now he has that chance. I fail to see the big deal about this story and I really fail to see how people are so pissed at Favre. To me it just shows how powerful the media still is in terms of drumming up artificial stories.

by MasterRWayne on Aug 18, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I really fail to see how people are so pissed at Favre.

If he would quite all the games and just DO IT then he wouldn’t have nearly the back-lash he has now.

It is all the, “Yes I am definately retire now.” Only to unretire a couple weeks/months later.

when the thread is full of people with similar sentiments?

Its just that you seem to take really non personal things as really personal. You saying you don’t like him or respect him is just taking things too far. Stop buying what the media feeds you, son.

Favre is a great player. Few things will ever change that for me. If he wants to play then big deal. I am just glad he is not playing in the AFC South.

by MasterRWayne on Aug 18, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

If you are glad that he's not in the AFC South,

then how can you blame the Packers for not wanting to trade him to the Vikes last year? I think Favre wore out his welcome playing the whole “I might retire this summer” game and may have deserved a little dick treatment. Then again, if Peyton did this exact same thing, I may have a different answer…hmm..

I agree that Favre is good for the NFL.. and if someone wants to sign him and he wants to play, great.
I also agree that the media has totally overblown this whole situation and I’m overly sick of hearing about it.

by yellowsnow on Aug 18, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

the media also says he's still a good quarterback, which I don't buy and you do

so which one of us buys everything the media feeds us, or do we both have differing opinions that agree and disagree with the media narrative on different topics?

Favre reached the level of self-parody

Weren’t we reading not TWO WEEKS ago that Favre had “DEFINITELY decided” to stay retired and it was the hardest decision of his life? I know those words are meaningless at this point, but holy crap.

by slash196 on Aug 18, 2009 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

pathetic

This has reached the point of pathetic game playing. Before this I thought Jerry Rice was bad, just never being willing to hang it up, but he never said he was retiring and just kept looking for a team. This ’I’m retired’ ‘no i am coming back’ routine is just annoying now, and I have lost a lot of respect for Favre. I understand now why the packers got rid of him. Everything is about him…not good in a team sport like football.

An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...

by bluegirl on Aug 18, 2009 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

At the end of the day

The overwhelming perception is that he’s doing this to give the Packers a giant middle finger. Yeah, it might be difficult for some guys to hang it up, but Favre’s petulance and waffling are hard to ignore and fly in the face of good sportsmanship and character.

by Rocky Top Manning on Aug 18, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

Favre has zero credibility

No one believes in Favre anymore. I hope that Green Bay doesn’t retire his number…I think it’s actually funny that he is playing to hurt the very people who loved him…It’s fantastic!!!…Favre ruins teams with his ego. The Jets started out well last year only to have Favre drag them down….He’ll do the same to Minnesota. Yuo can bank on it….

BTW, nobody in Minnesota’s franchise is going to believe in this guy, they all know he’s doing it for himself, not for them…I am just licking my chops for the final Joe Theisman hit on Favre….

Next time,

just go to Phil B’s blog just before game time. He always puts up an inactives list. Here’s the one from last week:

Starting lineup changes have Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie starting at WR with Reggie Wayne in a three-receiver set. Tony Ugoh is in for Ryan Diem at RT. Corey Hillard is in for Charlie Johnson at LT. I expect this is because Johnson has been practicing at camp for only one week because he tore a pectoral in the offseason. On defense. Daniel Muir starts for Antonio Johnson at DT. Jerraud Powers is in for Kelvin Hayden at LCB, Tim Jennings for Marlin Jackson at LCB, Jamie Silva is in for Melvin Bullitt at SS (who is evidently nicked up because he didn’t dress), and Matt Giordano stars for Antonie Bethea at FS.

If you had just looked, you would have known ;-P

It's better this way...

If either of them was in Indy on the sidelines I probably would’ve ended up in jail. F them both.

If Favre holds up, this move won’t hurt the Vikings. But they were likely the NFC favorite this year with Rosenfels at QB. And Rosenfels doesn’t have the arm to take the chances Favre will. Rosencopter notwithstanding, he’s generally patient and accurate. We need only look at all the long sustained high % drives he has strung together against the Colts in recent years to know that. He seems to have matured in his later years, which is the exact opposite of Favre.

For once I agree with Peter King. This is a big mistake for the Vikings. They’ve set a precedent here, letting him walk all over them. He owns that team now. Childress has no control and has lost their two other QBs. If Favre fails, he has lost his job. Even if he doesn’t, they’re screwed going forward because they’ll need to replace Favre next year. (Though if Childress ends up fired, one could make the argument that they still come out ahead for the future.) If Favre was in his prime, this is all worth it. He’s not. He’s more likely to hurt them than to help them.

by willyduer on Aug 18, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm so sick of him

I understand that life after sports is really hard for many athletes to cope with. A large percentage of them end up divorce and/or file bankruptcy. Michael Jordan is still having trouble figuring out what he wants to do after finally giving it up five years ago, and we saw what happened to Steve McNair; but Favre needs to quit it. He has really ruined his image of being a down-to-earth, open hearted, simple guy. Now we know that he’s just as egomaniacal as Terrell Owens and Chad Ocho-Stinko.

The Favre hate stuff has just gone too far. Sure the constant 24/7 news cycle of ESPN wears on all of us, but the guy wants to play and he should play. He was a very good player last year for the Jets until his arm gave out on him. He can still be productive.

As for the “vengeance” factor I think it is there. I think what McCarthy and the others did to him in Green Bay was a little shitty. I’d be pissed about it too, but if you watched his interview with Joe Buck he only had the nicest things to say about Aaron Rodgers and his former teammates with Green Bay. He clearly doesn’t hold any grudges with those guys.

Bottom line is I wish Favre all the luck in the world. The guy can still play at a high level and he only helps thise Vikings team.

by MasterRWayne on Aug 18, 2009 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Personally, I don't care whether he plays.

My problem with Favre is the retiring and un-retiring crap he has pulled for the past two seasons. Taking a few months to think about it is one thing, actually saying “I’m retiring” and changing his mind is another. Seemingly, he does everything possible to be the center of attention. I’m just glad he won’t be bringing that selfish crap into the Colts’ locker room.

I’ve lost alot of respect for him over the past two years. And I pray that Peyton doesn’t end up following in Favre’s footsteps. I have a feeling, though, that Peyton will know when to hang it up – or at least he will know to STICK TO HIS DECISION once made.

his arm didn't give out on him

His arm was fine, he just isn’t that good and is making excuses. Now he waffled all summer and made pre-emptive excuses for when/if he sucks again this year.

I hate him, but recognize that that’s largely a product of the excessive coverage. (But also because he’s well known to be a selfish primadonna and bad teammate, even independent of the media distraction.) But I also root against him because I believe he’s not as good as everyone thinks he is, and I also believe Sage Rosenfels is better than most think.

by willyduer on Aug 18, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The article I read says

that the Vikings stepped up their recruitment efforts last Wednesday after not liking the vikes practice, and then the injuries to both TJ and the Rosencopter really urged them on.

I think it’s possible Brett really meant it 2 weeks ago, and remember, even then he said “Who knows? if I get a call in midseason, maybe I’ll be playing” or something like that. So I don’t think he was toying with anyone.

Thank you!

Nice to have someone put reason into this. It was clear the Rosenfels injury spurred this on. I personally don’t think Favre’s arm is 100%. They need to think about rotating their QB’s some this year.

Either way if the Vikings can find a way to get effective QB play then they will be very dangerous.

It’s largely inconsequential to us until at least February, but dammit, I just want him to not start once so Peyton can start gaining ground on that consecutive starts streak.

Impossible to break

It’s like Wilt’s 100 point game or Otto Graham’s championship game run. Same thing with the Favre pill-popping record. Only the greats can match the number of Vikadin he shoved down his throat.

Brett Favre is a douche. I hope the Vikings go 0-16 this year and trade their draft pick for Brandon Marshall so they can have the douche team of the century.
