Ugoh= you should go
I may be out of line, but it seemed to me in the game tonight that Charlie Johnson *gasp* handled himself very well tonight at LT........
I know that the chop block was a BS call, I watched the replay, my point is that the call happened when Mr. Ugoh was on the right side of the line......I'm not saying one is better than the other, but for the "silliness" to end, maybe Tony Ugoh should step up and prove himself, because the 1st team offense looked just fine without him at LT this evening

It's a lesser of two evils thing
Is Ugoh the answer at LT? It’s looking like the answer is no. Is he better than Charlie Johnson? YES. Yes he is.
He will only be better than CJ...
When he steps up and takes the position…it should not be given to him!!! He has not done this yet.
That logic is horrible. Picking the lesser of two evils still results in picking evil. Evil, otherwise meaning bad, is not something you want associated with the second most important position on the offense. The Colts need to solve this issue asap.

what other options are there at this point in the season
that’s why he’s talking about just Ugoh vs CJ, because there isn’t really a 3rd option.

But if your only choices are evil
Then there’s not all that much solving possible, which is where the phrase originates.
Otherwise it would be “picking the lesser of two evils, or some other option which is clearly better”. And that wouldn’t really work.

As bad as he may be...
Ugoh is STILL better than CJ on any given day. Just watch that sack where Peyton fumbled the ball. The DE just blew right by CJ. I was screaming at the TV, " JOHNSON SUCKS!"
Ah well. Preseason.
Check it to Pancakes! Pancakes!
And I was...
screaming the same thing on the penalties that Ugoh took!!! At least CJ was not a 2nd (faux 1st) round pick!!! Also, CJ was playing against starters.
So you'd rather
have Manning constantly getting pressured from his weekside and saked more often, than let Ugoh play have a few penalties?? cause thats what I hear.

Manning isn't stupid
if he already knows there will be a little more pressure from the left side, he will adjust to it with quicker passes or more screen plays.

Not only did the DE blow by him
but when the fumble went right by CJ, the only “effort” (I’m using that word very lightly) CJ made to get it was AFTER the Eagles had already recovered it. I mean he stared right at the ball long enough for it to register that “Hey, maybe I should jump on that.” Just like everyone else I dont believe that Ugoh has done anything that has just dazzled, me but he played better than CJ at LT last night and he is the better person for the starting job at LT overall. My guess is youll see him start there next week and the Colts will evaluate him from there.

watch the replay of the game
or read the play by play I posted in the other thread. Johnson’s mistake stood out more, but Ugoh made many more mistakes, including one that resulted in Painter nearly losing his head.
Am I the only one....
who thinks it wasn’t even a fumble?? Caldwell should have challenged the play. Peyton’s knee was down before the ball came out.
It still doesn’t take away from the bad block by CJ though.
With CJ, the coaches know that he is going to let a guy by every once in a while, but they also know he is a solid run blocker. Last year we sucked in the running game so they want a more physical effort. Ugoh has the skill to be a better pass blocker, and he is generally more consistent at it, but you never know when he is going to take a couple plays off and that is troubling.
The way everyone was talking around here before the Eagles game, you would think that CJ would whiff on every single block and Manning would have his leg broken! CJ had a couple of bad plays, but not nearly as bad as it could have been; and Ugoh was playing against lesser talent and didn’t play any better than CJ…

I agree.
For one thing, Peyton saw that guy coming (perhaps he was expecting someone to break through over there, I dunno) and pretty much went down. THEN the ball came out. Caldwell needs to remember that preseason is also for him – he needs a little practice throwing that little red flag.

I was screaming Peyton! You're the man!
Sack and fumble? No problem, forget about it. Next drive, line up, one play….TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!!

Yea...
On that Eagles drive…3rd down…I yelled to my son…where the heck is Freeney!!! 2 seconds later I got my answer!! I even think he winked at the camera because he knew I had asked!!! That is what I get for questioning a future HOF player!!
I didn't see the wink, but I did see him salute you. Or was he saluting me?
If you recorded the game watch it again, great gesture.

He was saluting all of us.
I can’t get enough of his spin move. It’s sooo awesome.

I completely disagree
If i remember correctly Ugoh had 2 penalties against him. The first was false start, he was one of 3 O-linemen who could have been called for the penalty. It appeared the snap count was a problem from painter. The 2nd penalty was a BS call on the chop block that even the announcers knew shouldn’t have been called. Either way, not a horrible game for him.
Johnson proved completely useless in protecting manning. As it was said above, the fumble was cause cause Johnson blew his block. Johnson is worthless as a LE. I agree Ugoh should step up to play like we drafted him to, but Johnson is definately not the example.
On a side note, remember back when T. Glenn was our LE and he got false starts every blessed game? I still miss him, because I knew peyton wasn’t going to get blindsided during the game and end up like Brady. Hopefully I’ll have that confidence with Ugoh by the end of the year.

I remember back when Tarik Glenn was the LT.
At the time I believe Mr. Mathis and sometimes Brock were the LEs.
Completely Useless????
I will take 2 touchdowns out of 3 possessions any day of the week and twice on Sunday

So?
CJ didn’t really do anything well. So many quick passes on the first drive made it impossible for CJ to screw it up, and the second “possession” was one play.
"I saw a commercial on late night TV, it said,'Forget everything you know about slipcovers.' So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were."
-Mitch Hedberg
And
I think that’s what you are going to see more of with CJ out there in Ugoh’s place. An emphasis on the run, with more play action, more quick passing and more screen plays.
"I'm looking for Ray Finkle....and a clean pair of shorts."
CJ gave up a sack in 1 quarter of play
that’s not handling yourself well at LT by any stretch.
It's shocking what you can miss sometimes. The amazing color changing card trick.
But
it was his first game starting with this unit….
Manning had a ton of INTs his first year in the NFL but that one worked out, didn’t it? Let’s not complete our judgements until we have more to work with here.

first game this year
he’s played at least half a season at LT over the last two years filling in for Ugoh while he was hurt.

I'll have to watch the tape
but I’m thinking Ugoh wasn’t exactly stellar last year at LT (in the games he played) or else they wouldn’t even have thought of benching him in training camp.
I still think the move was based more on run blocking ability than anything else.
"I'm looking for Ray Finkle....and a clean pair of shorts."
Before the draft...
I was saying RB and Tackle (both LT and RT) were the big need positions for the Colts. I actually had tackle rated higher than RB because a good tackle will improve your running game and your passing game.
The Colts addressed the RB issue with Donald Brown, but sadly they failed to address the tackle issue and its starting to really show.
Johnson did not handle himself well at all
I thought he looked overmatched…something that i have never though ugoh was…ugoh’s head isn’t always in the game, but at least he isn’t overmatched…CJ is

I love your use of the word “da” instead of “the” – it shows me you are a man (or woman) who knows what he/she wants and isn’t going to waste time with punching in extra letters just to sugarcoat things or use correct grammar. You have a point to make and you are going to make it, no matter what.
