Breaking News: Seward released; Sorgi returns to practice
In a move greatly surprising to me, John Oehser is reporting here that the Colts have just released backup MLB Adam Seward, a rare veteran pickup that had everyone (falsely) thinking that he would be the future at MLB. Apparently not. I'm not sure if the move signals that the Colts organization was not happy with Seward or if they were impressed with the other backup LB's. Either way, I wish Seward well.
In some better news, Jim Sorgi has put down his clipboard and has returned to practice. This is a very fast healing for a guy thought to be out until the season opener. Now he has a chance to defend his backup QB job against Curtis Painter, who has had a good preseason. In an expected move, the return of Sorgi means bad news to Chris Crane, who was horrible this preseason and was immediately released.
In the same entry, Oehser reports that Mike Hart will miss at least 2 weeks with his ankle injury. The stage is now set for Lance Ball to take the 3rd running back spot. It will be interesting to see if he can get it.

WHAT!?!?!?!?!
I loved the way Seward was playing! This move shocks me so much!
I was going to comment after the Eagles game that he really impressed me. He was intense and was constantly in the guys ears after a play – seemed like a great teammate and attentive to details. I thought he would be another Veteran leader and possible special teams ace. In Polian we Trust…
That bums me out though!

He was making solid plays and is a very sound tackler. Kieaho seems lost out there to me. I am baffled by this but I guess he just doesn’t fit with the team’s vision or something. How much was Seward set to make vs. Keiaho? Seems like Seward would have been cost effective too.

Not surprising
He was out of position all game vs. Minnesota and slow despite trying hard in the Eagles game. I guess that was all they needed to see. Hard worker, but not good enough.
So…
Brackett
Session
Wheeler
Senn
Keiaho
Hagler
Humber
Tauiliili
(anyone else?)
Do they keep 6 like the last couple years, or just five, in favor of keeping more linemen? Have Hagler and Freddie done enough on ST to solidify their spots, or will the hustle of Humber and Tauiliili win them jobs?

Out of position
is a perfect description for how Keiaho plays about 90% of the time….

Roster
I would rather see Humber or Tauilili or both make the team but I still like Hagler and I think he would be a solid backup to Wheeler as well as a ST contributor.

Humber
He has the “it” factor (so far) that is lacking from Keiaho and apparently Seward too. He is a football player, regardless of his size he is around the ball making plays. I would like to see him get more reps with some starters or early in the game so we can see what he can do. OR if he made the team based solely on ST then I would like that too.

That would be great.
I would like to check out what he can do against a 1st team O.
Kid plays with heart, that can’t be bad.

Seward?
Maybe this is another ploy to get Ugoh to play better? Go ahead, call me abstract.

So now we’re back to the lack of depth at Mike that hurt us last year? Makes no sense to me…

If the guy isn’t good enough, what use is having that depth? Maybe someone like Senn can do the job.

I know they taught Hagler the MLB spot before he became a starter
and I think Wheeler’s practiced there. Keiaho might not be the only MLB option.

I hope so
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Seward, but I would much rather see Hagler out there than Keiaho.

I just hoped that we would finally start upgrading our LB’s and hoped that Seawrd could be the first step in this. I’m not as high on our LB’s as the popular opinion on this blog. I guess I will have to wait another season.

I’m not that high on them either, but Seward being new obviously doesn’t make him any better.
They replaced Keiaho with Wheeler, which should be fine as long as Session keeps improving. In the event of an injury, they may have 2 backups with 3 years experience. Or maybe there’ll be 2 or 3 new guys who battled hard and took their jobs. It could be a lot worse. Plus, if the D Line eats up an extra blocker on run plays this year, that makes all the LBs a lot better, regardless of who they are.

Neither am I (sort of)
I think Brackett is well suited for the Cover 2, Wheeler has good potential and Session is going to be great. I like Hagler as a backup or as the 1B SAM if Wheeler doesn’t pan out.
I don’t like Keiaho much and think he is best suited for special teams or playing for another team. I had high hopes for Seward (and still think he may come back) as a backup MIKE or even SAM, special teams player or potential future MIKE. He is just learning this defense so I expect him to come along but not know everything right now. I agree with you that they need to upgrade the LBs as a whole and Seward was a step in that direction

Obviously not, or they wouldn’t have cut him!
High hopes and actual performance are two separate things. Dude just plain isn’t good enough. To me, he looks a step slower than everyone else. For a linebacker in the cover 2, speed is critically important. Some of you guys make it sound like you think they’re intentionally trying to worsen the team. I’m pretty sure that Murphy, Coyer, Caldwell, and the Polians know a bit more than we do about choosing a 5th linebacker.
I’m also not sure why you keep saying he might come back. If they really thought he could play a role on the 53 man roster, they wouldn’t have cut him and risked losing him to another team. They’d have kept him around for that reason plus the whole idea of letting him learn and practice more so he’d be more valuable when the season starts.
by willyduer on Aug 24, 2009 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure, speed is important
but having speed like Kieaho while being in the wrong place, missing assignments or flat blowing tackles doesn’t mean anything anymore. I would rather have a guy that is a step slower, but can fill a hole, shed a block and make a tackle over a fast guy that overpursues and then falls down while trying to backtrack to the ball carrier.

I said he might come back
because as we all know Colts players get injured all the time and he could have been resigned in that event.

definitely
I just think that it would take many injuries for someone who was cut at this stage to end up actually making the final roster. If he got picked up again after the Detroit game chances are it’d just be to eat minutes in preseason game 4.
Re: speed vs accuracy, one without the other is pretty useless, you’re right. But if someone is fast but reckless/out of place sometimes he can still make plays. The slow guy can’t, because the ball carrier is already past him. He just ends up being that last guy piling on.
Keiaho certainly regressed but I don’t recall him ever making a habit of being lost/completely out of position out there. My biggest gripe for him last year was that he seemed too easily blocked and missed tackles. Not an ungodly amount of tackles, but enough for me to notice. It seems like Seward has already gotten more interest from the rest of the league than Keiaho did this offseason, so others definitely share your opinion, but I think we can both agree that it’d be nice to have someone that can bump both of them. Maybe Tauiliili or Humber is that guy. Wouldn’t be the first Ramon to come out of nowhere and take a LB spot for this team.

I think Keaiho went out on an awful note last year
trying to fill Brackett’s shoes while up against Antonio Gates.
Not really surprising he struggled at MLB when he had tons of issues playing WLB but that’s the image sticking in everyones head. A failure at MLB rather than a regression at WLB.

Love Humber
and I like what I see from Tauilili so far too.
I wouldn’t be surprised if either one of them, or both, made the team in place of Freddie K

Seward was an ATTEMPT to upgrade the LB's
It obviously didn’t go as well as hoped.
I want the Colts to field the best team possible.
