My Mock Roster 2009
This roster will include 53 roster spots, PUP players (who I think may start on the PUP), and practice squad players. As I have no idea who will be getting cut from the other rosters, I can't foresee what will be available at which position that might prompt these choices to change. Anyway, after three preseason games I feel like I can make an pretty educated guess at what the roster might look like. When I feel it is appropriate I will explain my choices and indicate who might be replaced by PUP players with a * by their names.
Quarterback:
Peyton Manning
Jim Sorgi
Running Back:
Joseph Addai
Donald Brown
Lance Ball* (Simply not as good as Mike Hart when both players are healthy)
Wide Receiver:
Reggie Wayne
Anthony Gonzalez
Austin Collie
Pierre Garcon
Taj Smith (primarily as a ST gunner)
Tight End:
Dallas Clark
Jacob Tamme
Gijon Robinson* (Has looked pretty bad blocking)
Offensive Line:
Tony Ugoh
Charlie Johnson
Ryan Lilja
Jamey Richard
Kyle DeVan
Jeff Saturday
Mike Pollak
Daniel Federkeil
Ryan Diem
Safety:
Bob Sanders
Antoine Bethea
Melvin Bullitt
Jamie Silva
Matt Giordano
Cornerback:
Kelvin Hayden
Marlin Jackson
Tim Jennings
Jerraud Powers
Jacob Lacey (Faster, better in man coverage, and more upside than Hughes/Coe)
Linebacker:
Clint Session
Gary Brackett
Philip Wheeler
Tyjuan Hagler
Jordan Senn
Mike Tauiliili
Defensive End:
Dwight Freeney
Robert Mathis
Marcus Howard
Curtis Johnson (Superior pass rusher and special teams player to Keyunta Dawson)
Raheem Brock
Defensive Tackle:
Ed Johnson
Daniel Muir
Antonio Johnson
Eric Foster (I keep Foster over Dawson as well)
Fili Moala
Adrian Grady (Hands down has out-played both Moala and Taylor. Ready to contribute now. Stash Taylor.)
Special Teams:
T.J. Rushing (Best returner we have on the team at this point)
Justin Snow
Pat McAfee
Adam Vinatieri
Practice Squad:
Curtis Painter
Tom Pestock (I could see him being replaced here, but I'm running out of people I would hold on to)
John Matthews
Jaime Thomas
Steve Justice (If he's eligible)
Terrance Taylor
Ramon Humber
Travis Key
Physically Unable to Perform List:
Mike Hart
Tom Santi

can't PUP Hart or Santi
only time you can be put on the PUP is at the start of camp. Guys that don’t come off the PUP when the season starts have to sit 6 weeks.
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.
and Justice is PS eligible, only 8 games active last year.
9 is the cutoff.

My Choice?
If it were entirely up to me, I would keep Painter and offer Sorgi a position on the team as a consultant. Sorgi’s insight and experience on the team is very valuable. His chemistry with Manning is also important. I don’t think he would have a legitimate chance to be a quarterback for any other team in the league, other than in a similar capacity to the one he has filled here. If being a quarterback were the biggest goal for Sorgi I imagine he would have attempted to latch one somewhere else long ago, rather than knowingly sit behind one of the best and most reliable quarterbacks that has ever played the game. If the front office makes that decision, I will be stoked. However, if he is unwilling to stay with the team in some capacity, it might require us to keep three QBs. Losing Sorgi would be painful not just because of his knowledge of the Colts offense and chemistry with Manning but also because that knowledge in the hands of a competitor would be extremely undesirable. Three roster spots for QBs? cringe God I hope we don’t have to do that.
Taylor
I would be a bit surprised if anyone would attempt to snag Taylor at this point because he has not shown anything that would be really enticing. Unless a GM or team scouted him really heavily out of Michigan or had an infatuation with getting someone drafted that high who is waived for roster cut downs, I think we could stash him on the PS. It could be a risk but I would rather risk losing Taylor than I would Foster or Grady.
Taylor
I think Polian sees him in the long term, not as a guy that will come in and contribute this year. He has potential (hate using that word so much) to be a solid NT and I think teams would see him as a future long term prospect just like the Colts do. Basically what I am saying is that if it came down to Taylor or Grady, I would keep Taylor on the active roster and put Grady on the PS. I would even consider Grady on the roster as well and parting ways with Foster even though I like the guy a lot.
I like your reasoning with CuJo over Dawson but I think they will keep Dawson because he has experience and can fill the Josh Thomas role well.
"I'm looking for Ray Finkle....and a clean pair of shorts."
Foster...
I said this before in other posts, but I think Foster has a decent chance on not making the roster. Grady has impressed me more, and Dawson in my opinion is more versatile in playing both the outside and inside effectively a.k.a Brock style. I have yet to see Foster pressure the QB, and I thought that’s what Foster is suppose to do. I just don’t see the big need for Foster when Brock, Grady, Dawson, and possibly Moala are all better pass rushers. Am I way off in this assessment. I agree with your point on Big T though.

Foster can double though
The Colts like versatile players, and if they’ve been giving him a lot of snaps in the power I that probably means they’re not planning on cutting him. Sure, they don’t use it that often, but AFAIK he’s the ONLY guy who has been given that assignment. They kept Dan Klecko on the roster for that, and that guy couldn’t do jack at DT (I love him just the same though).
Forgot about Foster as on offensive weapon
I went to one of the training camp afternoon practices this year and they were working Foster a good deal in the role of a fullback on goal line situations. I have also heard other reports of this from the training camp commentary on this blog. If they are serious about that, then he has a good chance of making the roster due to his versatility.

Having this problem is a good thing...
There are going to be some players who will get cut that could/should be on the team. I think this is a very deep team, very interested on who’s going to get left out.

Big T
If the Colts are silly enough to put Terrance on the PS they’ll be making a HUGE mistake. There is no way he doesn’t get picked up by another team with needs at the D.T. position. A team like Detroit that has major needs on the D line would jump at the chane to pick him up and play him in a rotation on run downs and goal line situations. One of the things I noticed that leads me to believe so strongly that he makes the roster is his contract. His deal is better than at least the 10 guys drafted in front of him. Tells me the front office likes him pretty well, plus he wasn’t the #1 rated Tackle in the country at the end of his junior year for nothing. Michigan had a horrible year last year and his draft stock wend down with their bowl games streak.
All well and good but...
Taylor has done all of nothing in the preseason to stand out, look good, or give me any confidence that he’s ready to contribute to this team in any way this season. Other DTs on the roster who have done so follow:
Ed Johnson
“Mookie” Johnson
Daniel Muir
Adrian Grady
Fili Moala
Eric Foster
A lot of people are pretty down on Eric Foster’s performance so far in the preseason as is, and many think he’ll be cut. How many DTs will the team keep? If we keep unproven Terrance Taylor and cut Adrian Grady in an effort to sneak him onto our practice squad, despite the fact that Grady has looked REALLY FREAKIN’ GOOD, for the sake of keeping a guy with a strong college background, who we drafted, on the basis of his contract… well that’s silly.
I think Grady is ready to go right now. I have seen nothing to suggest that from Taylor. You keep your best players on your regular season roster. I’m confident Grady and Moala are better right now. Muir has shown ability. Big Ed is a sure-fire starter. Mookie v. Taylor? We’ll have to see.
But
Moala made his first couple of plays in the Lions game, and he was a 2nd round pic. My point is that Polian said it himself, the DT position is one of the hardest transitions to make from college to the NFL and they don’t expect these guys to start producing right away. Polian said that he didn’t even expect Moala to really produce or be a factor on this defense until at least the end of this season, if not until next season. Taylor, a 4th round pick, should be given the same chance IMO.
Also, Taylor doesn’t fit the mold of our typical Colts DTs, so that will make it an even tougher transition for him. I agree that he should make the roster but I also agree that if the Colts let him go another team will quickly pick him up with the intent to groom him into a solid NT for many years.
"Put him on the board. Houshmazilli....got it. CHAMPIONSHIP!"
I agree that Grady has looked pretty good this preseason, but unlike everyone else, I don’t think that it’s a guarantee that Muir will make the final 53. He has improved, but I’m not seeing the same from him that everyone else is. We will need him in week 1 with Ed out, but after that I’m not sold that he will remain on the roster. I could even see them cutting Eric Foster and then bringing Foster back after the Jax game.
Just a hunch.
