On 2009 being "special" for the Colts
Since the draft I've been wondering if 2009 may be the perfect storm for the Colts in terms of talent being available at the right price. The increasing number of teams running a 3-4 and the much-exaggerated demise of the Tampa-2 has created a situation in which the Colts have been able to sign young former starting linebackers in Hagler and Keiaho as backups, for backup money, while establishing a near monopoly on undersized, gap-shooting DTs and big, athletic cover corners who tackle extremely well. Just wondering if anyone had thoughts on whether the availability of talent this offseason has had much to do with teams like Tampa Bay and Detroit no longer being in the market for Tampa-2 role players? The impression that this team is "special" seems warranted, but I also think some of the reasons it could be so exceptionally deep are reflections of the Colts being positioned in the right place at the right time in the (perceived) twilight of the Tampa-2.

I hope that the colts are soon the only team running a tampa 2. It will help a LOT.

We say this every year
Like most fans, the offseason is the season for eternal optimism. Every rookie can play, every FA signing is going to be huge, nobody’s going to get injured and everyone’s going to develop.
Part of the fun, I suppose.
i agree with that 100%
I do always get mad when EVERY TEAM expects to do better just because they drafted and signed certain players. Guess what? Every other team drafted and signed players, too! Although this is a very nice article, as it’s 100% true that many teams are leaving the tampa 2 behind. Meaning that if the rookies can’t play and people DO get injured, well there will be plenty of tampa 2 style players who no one else wants. This isnt optimism, its the truth.

agreed that every team is optimistic in the offseason
but I think we’re looking at special circumstances when we can let go very reliable, very young former starters and re-sign them at the league minimum. the key is whether you think we would have resigned Hagler, Keiaho, or Giordano in a year when Monte Kiffin, Jim Haslett, et al. were still in the league. because the optimism this year seems to be more about our depth than about any any superstars we’ve acquired (Donald Brown aside)

I really like them
I was introduced to cool psych stuff early, my dad was a high school teacher and psych was one of the things he taught.
and they kind of advance my point about the usefulness of stats in aiding your perceptions.

oh
And I just wanted to clear it up that I knew his story, I just thought it would be a little mean to say that about a guy who was injured. :)

well not injured
he was born with the spinal condition, he’s actually really lucky he didn’t get seriously injured in all the years he played football before getting to college where they found the issue.
