Week 1: Thursday Injury Report, News
Two new names on the injury report today. Fili Moala sat out today after practicing fully yesterday (knee) and Tim Jennings continues to get a day off to rest each week. Bob Sanders (knee), Jamie Silva (abdomen) and Tom Santi (ankle) sat out a second day of practice.
Over on the Jags side. Backup tackle Tra Thomas returned to practice, TE Zach Miller (the lesser) sat out again and 2nd string (backup to rookie starter Terrance Knighton) DT Derek Landri was added to the report after being limited by a knee injury.
In the news, Oesher reports that Coach Caldwell called Jerraud Powers starting Sunday's at CB opposite Kelvin Hayden "likely". Marlin Jackson will play the nickel with Tim Jennings likely relegated to the dime package.
Bill Polian on NFL Network (via 18to88) says that Sanders has been cleared by Dr. James Andrews, but must reach conditioning and practice time benchmarks before he will be allowed to play on the surgically repaired knee. Polian calls Sanders' progress "rapid".
Finally, in case you didn't see the announcement at the top right of every SB Nation blog, the network has launched a new mainpage with news, scores and analysis from bloggers within and (formerly) outside of SB Nation with sub-pages with all the previously mentioned features for each major sport. Looks very cool.
[Update] Phil B (via commenter Cass) relays the clearest injury status answer ever given by the Colts. Jamie Silva will not play Sunday. Leaving only the newly signed (and widely panned for poor cover skills by Cards fans) Aaron Francisco backing up Antoine Bethea and Melvin Bullitt.

this isn’t anything serious for Moala and he is ready to go come sunday

Phil B is reporting that
Silva is not going to play Sunday. Here’s the story.
As Phil B points out, this leaves us with only 3 healthy safeties, including the new guy.

injuries have left us so thin
please no injuries, especially to our safety position

It was more self-inflicted than anything.
I wasn’t too happy when they cut Giordano, but mostly because I liked him as a player. One surprise injury has now eliminated our quality depth.
Start rubbing that rabbit foot for the game Sunday, because we can’t afford any more secondary injuries at the moment. We should be OK for week 2 though from what I read.

don't worry T.J. Rushing has played safety and there's that guy they just signed to the PS
UGH.
if Bullitt or Bethea goes down they should just run the 4-4 again (with Wheeler please, not Freddie).
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

That 4-4 was, well,
very interesting. It seemed to work against the Titans last year, even though we lost the game. However, that formation should (in theory) be picked apart by a competant passer.

what about a competent passer being protected by two rookies playing their first NFL game?

If the two rookies are lining up against 2 DE's that
just went to the Pro Bowl, that competant passer should expect to spend many plays lying on his back, especially if he tries to throw deep like you would against the 4-4-3.
It could work against the Jags; I just don’t like it. I’m now having images of Torry Holt catching 50 yard touchdown passes and people claiming him reborn in Jacksonville.

Also
Marlin played safety most of his rookie season here. So if he is healthy enough, he could step up and let Lacey or Rushing play nickel.
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

I just don't see the wisdom
In cutting Giordano to bring in a cast off who can’t cover and knows nothing about the Colts D.
Just astonishing.

I'm guessing Silva's injury is very recent
and Bob is expected back relatively soon.
I doubt they’d have done it if they expected to open the season with only 2 safeties that know the D.

Let's not
write off the “cast off” until we see him play.
Anyone who thinks that all of our DBs have second to none coverage skills has probably had a couple beers anyways.

even? 2:1?

Your drafts have been awful and it will catch up.
Jaguars have been doing some solid drafting the past two years. You’ll see.
Peyton Manning is nearing the end of his time. Your chance for returning to the SB again is slipping more and more as each year passes.
Your Defense is nothing special. Your primary star is hurt every year.

Pinnochio
your nose is getting longer.
Pretty new sparkling helmets aren’t going to save you this year either.

Dwight Freeney is just fine thank you.
oohh, you mean the fan favorite? I thought you meant the best player on the D.

Verrry nice.

I LOVE Bob, but Dwight is more important to the D.

Aaron Francisco
was brought into the Colts orginazation to play special teams. I dought that the Colts would trust a guy that they just picked up to play defense. My reasons why 1) it is a short time to learn the play book and 2) the Jags would pass right at him. The Colts (like stated above) would be better off putting Marlin up top.

Marlin
I think Marlin would be better as a safety anyways. He can play the ball well when it is in front of him and he is a good tackler.
I’m not a huge Bethea fan but I don’t want to get started about it because so many people here like him a lot.
