Colts working out DE/OLB Bruce Davis
According to indyfootballreport.com the Colts are bringing in former 2008 Steelers 3rd-round pick, Bruce Davis for a work out. He played DE at UCLA but the Steelers tried to switch him to OLB and it didn't work out. Decent size (in comparrison to Marcus Howard at least) to match the Colts new philosophy on the Dline. 6'3", 250 lbs.
Here are a few scouting reports I found:

I liked Davis in 08
I hope they sign him. A rush end behind Freeney/Mathis would make me happy.

yeah it would definitely be nice to pick him up
and if the Steelers liked him at one point, he can’t be half bad (plus he’s got some talented guys to overcome on that roster).
One concern though – does Polian’s third round curse extend to other teams’ 3 third round picks? Should we be worried about this?

3rd round pick
Good catch, psvirsky!
How can you not love a team that does this?

would make me very happy as well
We need some pass rush depth since I dont want the Colts to blitz if Freeney and Mathis aren’t in on every down

Steeler fan checking in
Davis’s problem in Pittsburgh to me, was he was kind of like a one trick pony, he could speed rush, but not much else, doesnt really bullrush, and doesnt possess great finesse moves
We had him pinned as an heir apparent/backup OLB, as well as edge rusher off nickel/dime passing situations, but he also ended up seeing time at ILB during the preseason
He is quick, but undersized for our scheme in the 3-4, but i really hope someone take a chance on him, he could be a good DE in the 4-3. Thats all it was in the end, the transition to hybrid didnt work, and he is no fit for DE in our 3-4

Sometimes it just doesn't work out
Not everyone who plays well with a hand down can make the transition to a stand-up guy. Good players sometimes aren’t system fits, and if the Steelers spent a third-rounder on the potential that he could make the jump, he’s gotta have something. After losing Howard I’d be nervous not having ANY rush to back up.

I don’t get the undersized comment. He’s bigger than James Harrison and weighs like 10 lbs less than Lamarr Woodley.

Not pure weight, just Davis being kinda lanky He's 250lbs, but he's also 6'3" as opposed to a thicker guy
Harrison is solidly built at 6 foot 242. Woodley is an inch shorter, but has 15 lbs on him.

Was meaning undersized for a DE in our scheme
And he wasnt able to make the transition to the stand up role very well

Who would they cut?
Don’t get me started on who I think they could and should cut to bring in another pass rusher. The Colts desperately need another pass rusher behind Freeney/Mathis since they dropped Curtis Johnson and Marcus Howard. When Freeney was out with the Lisfranc they were a completely different team (a bad one).

Bruce Davis? Seriously?
I thought I was seeing things when I read this fanpost title. If he amounts to anything I will be genuinely shocked.

you don't think he can be a situational pass rusher?
at most he’d split time with more solid run D end filling in for Freeney or Mathis.

I guess you're looking at him as a DE...
In my opinion, he’s hardly big enough to play LB! I know that the Colts have a greater need at that position than the Steelers, but Davis has not even shown enough to be a situational player. He got tons of playing time this preseason, and spent most of it getting bullied by o-linemen and missing easy tackles. We had high hopes when he was drafted, but things obviously didn’t pan out.

I've got an idea...
If we want an under-sized pass rusher, why not bring back Marcus Howard? Just a thought.

well Davis was generally better regarded coming out in 2008

Oh... well
Nevermind then. I’ll take a player who was “better regarded” coming out of college who has failed to stick with his team, who has not impressed the fans of his team, over a player who I have seen put pressure on quarterbacks in the regular and preseason for my team.
Come on Shake. That’s silly logic. Particularly when you cover a team which thrives on finding undrafted free agents who regularly contribute.

It's not the end all be all by any means, but it's a point in his favor
and “failed to stick with his team” isn’t much of a knock when it’s Marcus Howard that you’re advocating for.
if you want legit logic how about, “The Colts are bringing this guy for a look in instead of just re-signing Howard. They generally know what they are doing”.

LOL
I thought you would mention that Howard was released. That’s fine. I still know much more about Howard than I do about Davis. I have never argued that it is bad or wrong to bring in players for looks. Simply, arguing for a player against another based upon how “well regarded” they were out of college is silly. It means nothing, in his favor or otherwise.
As for generally know what they’re doing, of course. I wouldn’t argue with that. Above reproach or for some reason above suggestions that bringing back Howard as a under-sized pass rusher is better than an unknown, unproven, untested under-sized pass rusher who has no familiarity with the defense, I would argue with.
Most people have strongly disagreed or been shocked by the release of Howard. I haven’t heard or gotten the impression from a single Steelers fan that they are shocked that Davis couldn’t stick.

remember that in PIT he had to make a position change
he was a college DE. He had only played OLB for part of a spring camp as an underclassman.
When both were playing DE, the consensus was that Davis was the better player. That’s what the draft position means. Clearly it could be wrong, but just because a position change didn’t work out, it doesn’t mean he is.
Don’t get me wrong I love me some Marcus Howard. I just think a guy that was considered a better DE than Howard not too long ago is worth a long look.

I agree...
He’s definitely worth a look.

Also...
I looked on NFL Draft Scout and Marcus Howard was 79th ranked overall, a 3rd Round draft grade. Bruce Davis was ranked 128th, a 4th Round draft grade. For whatever it is worth.
Howard had 4.45 speed at the Pro Bowl while Davis had 4.78 speed. He’s bigger but slower. I guess that’s the direction we’re going on the line though so I can understand the look.
