Colts defeat Jags 14-12, alone atop the AFC South

The Colts blew two scoring opportunities early, but the defense held the Jags to just 12 points. Garrard was constantly harassed by the Colts pass rush, the damage from the Jags running game was limited, Reggie Wayne went off despite being the focus of the Jags pass D and the Colts run game showed flashes of competence. All discussed in over 1,600 comments between the gamethreads.

New Orleans could be the best team in the NFC hands down if their defense wasn’t so terrible… I don’t care how much better the Lions have gotten, they haven’t gotten so good as to warrant scoring 27 points and on another TD drive as we speak!

True

I was looking at their roster and they only have THREE ROOKIES. Talk about a bad draft class. One is a punter as well.

I <3 McAfee

I was really impressed with his punt that ended up at Jax 1.

The defense is pretty good. A tear damn near fell from my eye when they forced that 3 and out within the last 1:30 of the 4th. When big Ed comes back, that defense is gonna be very scary…

The Offense needs to step it up. The store should’ve been at 21-6, but I’ll give them a pass.

Powers

Made play after play after play. He is a legitimate starting CB in this league, and it was only his first game as a rookie.

by Aerostar193 on Sep 13, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

Thoughts

Defense looked great all around. Jerraud Powers looks like he has not heard of Bill Polian’s third round curse. He is a player. Too bad he didn’t get that pick. Garrard was very elusive and played well, but the pass rush smothered him. MJD, although 97 yds and a TD, was contained pretty well and no long runs broke out. He is a little prick by the way. Celebrating a TD, then taunting the crowd when you’re down and then blowing the 2 pt conversion. Game ball goes to Larry Coyer and the defense.

Peyton had a sub par game for Peyton Manning. The red zone pick was unneccessary and he was almost picked off twice more. Yet, a sub par Peyton is still better than 85% of other QBs. I’ll take the 301 yds and a TD. Gonzo….ugh…..get well soon. Hopefully we’ll have him back by week 6. Garcon filled in nicely, but he is NOT gonzo. Wayne was untouchable. The one true high point of the offense. Addai looked quick and Brown looked strong (and slightly better than Addai), but the blocking on the run was horrendous. The right side costs us a few first downs. Charlie looked good. Good for him.

A win’s a win, but the offense can’t come out next week and play the same way (although the dolphins looked pretty crappy). The great thing is if this happened last year (where the O played bad), there is no way the defense could win the game for us, let alone against Colt killer MJD. But we did win. The defense looked fantastic. If our d looks that good every game, we will be dangerous. Because the offense will obviously not look that poor many games.

Go Colts!

oh and

This defense should get better when Moala enters the lineup as well

by metal_militia on Sep 13, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

Holy crap

I didn’t even think about the fact that Moala, Bobzilla, and Big Ed didn’t play. Come on offense, let’s put this week 1 fluke in the past because the D is going to challenge you for better unit.

by npb1985 on Sep 13, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not expecting a whole lot from Moala this year...

he didn’t show a lot this preseason, coming off an injury, and is a rookie. I was wrong about Foster getting a lof of playing time earlier this year, so i’ll probably be wrong once again. It’ll take a while for Moala to get acclimated with the NFL and the Colts style of defense, but I expect big things from him in his 2nd year and on. He should just be a role player this year when needed and could make some plays here and there, but I don’t think the Colts will be relying on him as much as big E. Johnson.

Thats what I somewhat meant when he’ll have get acclimated with Colts style on Defense. I still like DT rotation for the Colts, and the D in general. It should be a good year for them.

We will definitely not resign Jackson

Unless he wants to come back as a nickelback because Jerraud Powers is just plain better.

Another thing

While the running game was pretty mediocre, I think it was easy to tell that the few instances we were unable to run were due to the blocking up front. Addai and Brown both played well and took what they were given. The O-line did good in pass protection, but they have to start making a push for our backs.

But Smith can contribute more. Jennings is a waste of a roster spot that could be TT or Smith.

by Colts Homer on Sep 13, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Not drinking the Tim Jennings Kool-Aid?

No way will the Colts cut Jennings though. They’ll need him for depth purposes, and I don’t he’s as bad as you make him out to be. He was the one constant at the CB position who could stay healthy last year and help provide some sucess with that pass Defense while Hayden and Jackson were out during large chunks of the season. Im not saying play him over Powers or anything, but why should the Colts cut a solid veteran back-up over an unproven undrafted free agent in Lacey? I wouldn’t like that in my opinion.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Sep 13, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Run game

From a yardage standpoint, I agree that it was mediocre. But from a short yardage convervsion standpoint, I thought we did well. Brown is more explosive, so maybe a few more carries would be called for. Addai did not look bad by any means. He converted when needed, and produced a touchdown as well. Loved the defense in general, though would like to see a little less “bend”. Pass rush was good, and included Muir raising some hell as well. Passing game looked great, if you take out that interception on the first drive and a couple of overthrown passes. Can’t really complain about 301 yds. and 94 passer rating. In all, this was a positive, but I am glad I didn’t bet the spread. A great game would have been no turnovers and two more scores.

by tim55 on Sep 13, 2009 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

everybody and anybody who lives in jax knows this was their superbowl game.

a win is a win is a WIN and they couldnt slop this one. we totally dominated this game and we deserved to win!

although Im not thrilled we didnt score so much more…could have had at least 20 more points…on what seemingly was the entire game in the jags end of the field (this shouldnt have been close if we score that early td) WE WON!

the jags throw their entire season into this game. they will fall apart after their superbowl game…aka this game. so again even though it was just a two point win…its a HUGE WIN!

garrard sucks. they have no recievers and I LOVED their proclamation of brick hands williamson being born again. nice job. 0 catches and a hilarious fall down before the ball gets to him. yeah hes back again. holt will be under used because garrard simply cant throw the ball down field and most of their other recievers are brick hands too

our d played TOUGH. yes we missed some tackles but this is not the d of the last few years! the D won this game

joe addai. he simply cant get any YAC. yes he got us our winning td but thats basically the only positive play he made and that fumble was ridiculous. we need to get the ball to clark more. he was wide open. donald brown is a future. lets play him more. he looks more explosive than addai

and reggie wayne made a sick catch. the guy is money!

we simply dominated this game but blew so many scoring opportunies. thats what Im not happy with. the play calling was suspect. we should have ran the ball on the first interception 3 times. they werent going to stop us 3 times. and on the fourth down Im throwing to a wide open somebody because they knew were going to run the ball

and having veniteri kick the fg was moronic. pin them down there again.

overall our d played great. our running game…addai for one. addai for one. cant stand that first down addai for one every series. its a waste down

mjd will not last the season. they are in serious trouble with that. the dump off pass is their entire offense and jones drew really only got one long run

its a WIN. they lost their superbowl and now they go to their no fan stadium and crumble. the texans are so overrated and those who picked them to win the division, what a joke!

its going to be against tennessee and the colts in the end!

LOVED the denver ending!

by kinnickcolt on Sep 13, 2009 4:59 PM EDT reply actions

I'd dare you post that on BCC, but i can already guess

You said,

we totally dominated this game and we deserved to win!
but then you said,
although Im not thrilled we didnt score so much more
we simply dominated this game but blew so many scoring opportunies

If you dominated the game then there wouldn’t have been any doubts before our last drive, be honest, you were worried we’d drive it to FG distance.

its a WIN. they lost their superbowl and now they go to their no fan stadium and crumble.

Thats so idiotic it doesn’t even deserve a response. And this there was this monstrosity of a comment.

garrard sucks. they have no recievers and I LOVED their proclamation of brick hands williamson being born again. nice job. 0 catches and a hilarious fall down before the ball gets to him. yeah hes back again. holt will be under used because garrard simply cant throw the ball down field and most of their other recievers are brick hands too

Garrard sucks…Not really, its the rookie Tackles blocking for the first time against NFL Elite. We hardly passed, aka hardly any catches and i think every WR falls on a throw once in their career…..Then we get to where you are partially right, Torry Holt was under used but i guess its because he can’t run faster than a bicycle now. As for the rest of our WRs, 2 of them were inactive, Garrard had less than 10 incompletes with the majority of them over thrown.

Good game by the D. Sucks to see Gonzo out for a few weeks, but the Colts don’t play a top flight pass D for a few weeks so it’s manageable.

I’d rather have a washed up Vinny than most of the other kickers in the league. I’d keep him, just for the playoffs.

McAfee is just… wow. That was a hell of a punt, and a hell of a ST play. Powers was playing out of his mind. And Collie is as good as his Madden counterpart (catches anything thrown within five yards of him). Garrard is a big dude, and almost any other QB would have taken multiple sacks today.

All in all, the Colts are a game up on every other team in the division in the first week. Can’t really argue with that.

and one little thing I forgot….its about time MJD gets flagged for his cocky showboating after every TD. act like you have played in the national football league for more than a game. same old jags. what he did should have been flagged. and he does this crap after every td. how is he getting a free pass on the flag? you better believe he missed the two point conversion because the colts were sick of his crap actions. no way in hell he was getting in after that. sick of his cocky antics
