Monday Night Football Open Thread

As in past years, we get 2 MNF games this evening, complete with throwback jerseys to the old AFL days. First the greatest team to never play a game the Patriots take on the Terrell Owens's, and then the Chargers go into Oakland to take on the Raiders.
I've picked the two underdogs in tonight's games to cover, but lose their games. I'd also like to mention that my opponent in the Over-Overflow league played Marshawn Lynch this week. I feel pretty comfortable he'll not get any points tonight.
Everyone should really enjoy Jon Gruden this season, as it will be the only one in the booth before he heads to South Bend in January...

I just think we pride ourselves...
On being fans with class. These athletes work very hard to play in the NFL and it’s terrible to see them go down to injuries. If someone cheered one of our guys getting hurt I’d find it classes and reprehensible. And I can’t think that if our fans do the same.

Bill have generally had very good ST units
their ST coach is some kind of ST guru or something. All the teams he’s worked with have had very good STs during his stay.

well a lot has to do with the players
I think there’s kind of another effect going on. If a GM is hiring a well known ST coach then he thinks STs are important and is probably more likely to get and keep players that are good on special teams, rather than just throwing the defensive backups out there and telling the ST coach to teach them.

it's kind of like something they talked about in "Freakonomics"
there was a program that allowed students to request transfers to more highly regarded high schools in their city with the transfers allowed chosen by lottery. They found that the students that transferred to the better schools did better than their peers that stayed, BUT when they compared just the students that requested transfers. Those that got them and those that didn’t there was no difference. It wasn’t the school making a difference it was students and their parents caring enough about their education to try to get into a better school.
So the GMs are the students and the ST coaches the schools. The GMs that go after the coaches with a good rep are the ones more committed to STs like the students that requested transfers were the ones more committed to education.

THis is great..
Remember the Colts ’04 season and how the entire league started playing us differently? We adjusted and adapted and continued to be a fantastic team. Late in 07 defenses figured out how to play the Pats (and whip their asses in supreme fashion in the Super Bowl). Not sure they really know how to adapt just yet. It is only game 1 and Brady will undoubtedly find his rhythm at some point during the season. That said, this Pats team looks like all of the pre-Moss/Welker teams to me (minus the dominating defenses of old).

The Colts play the Dolphins at 8:30 that same night. I don't think I can be any more ticked off right now. I think I'm going to kill someone. No, really. I just haven't decided who yet.

This won't happen to the Colts
No way the Colts give up the same TE-up-the-seam play once (Brackett covers that as well as any MLB in the league) let alone twice.
Edwards looked as good as I’ve ever seen him, and F. Jackson ran very well. The Bills are a year or two away, but look, they took that Eagles/Giants playbook on pressuring the Patriots and executed well for the most part. If the Colts pressure the Pats like they did the Jags, there’ll be a good result for us.
