Joseph Addai and the Colt Offence
Hey guys. So after the Jag game, i have some concerns, which leave me with feelings of deja vu from last year.
--Quickly about the game, even though it was close, i felt we were in control, manning played better than his numbers suggested, and 3rd downs seemed to be drills in a Sunday afternoon practice--
Why do we run the ball at the worst times, and send Joseph Addai into a pile of 5 defenders with no fullback?
Addai is not the greatest running back, but as my friend pointed out, hes PERFECT for the colts offense. Hes good at stretch and outside running plays, and is a great receiving back. So why do we send him on HB Dive runs, so he gets stuffed?
Why dont we throw on those situations, and run when the defense drops into nickel coverage?
Ok, let me take you through a hypothetical situation, that happens several times over the course of a game.
Peyton has completed 3-4 passes in a row, for 10-20 yards each. The defense drops into Nickel or Dime coverage to stop Manning and we throw into 7 or 8 man coverage, incomplete(Or a 3 yard completion)
My question is, why not run it now? Instead, we run it here:
Peyton is cold, maybe 2/5 in his last few passes, he just threw an incompletion, or has gotten hit recently and has his famous cold feet we all know and hate. So now, the defense is in 4-3, with a safety sneaking up, that 8th man in the box, and we run our bread and butter formation, singleback 1 TE, 1 slot and 2 WR's. And then we run Addai down the middle with no fullback against 5 or 6 rushers.
Can someone please explain this to me? This is why were not that good a running team. Were so much better than we let on.
Oooh and 1 more thing, why do we try to run a running play down the middle on 3rd and shorts, they never work, yet the times we pass on 3rd and shorts, were probably 75% during the season, while maybe 50% running.
Ok but enough negativeness
I'm confident about this year, everyone is telling me that were in trouble, that the Titans(I live in TN) made it a battle with the Steelers at PIT, and we could barely put the Jags away at home, and here's my response, Hey, 1st, we got a W, you did not, and 2nd, if you actually watched the game, out offense was great, so im confident about this year.
Im expecting a 12-4 year, we should get at the WORST 11-5, and i think with a great year we can pull off 13-3.
14-2 is possible, but i think that would require us playing good and some opponents choking, we can get 13-3 without anyone choking, we can get that on our own

Nobody
will respond with anything intellectual when you misspell something like OFFENSE in the title, be a big boy and make your "i"s capital too, it just looks sloppy and like no thought was put into something that took you time to write.

So why should I read your comments, when you can’t even write a sentence that isn’t a run-on? Welcome to the internet; not everyone gets their posts peer-reviewed and edited professionally. Did you read the post? There were some good questions in there. Your elitism is more annoying than a lowercase “i”.

Hey, at the local HS game last week
The scoreboard signaled “Make Some Noise!” when the home team was on offense (duh) and spelled out (with no amusing fence pictures) “dee-fence.” And this is reputedly one of the top schools in the state. Ugh. Can I tear down my house and build it somewhere else now, before my kids get to HS?
Back on topic, I sympathize with Karim and can only answer, Peyton can check into or out of those plays and he’s a heck of a lot better than I am at making those calls. It almost seems like a stupid macho thing—okay, I see 7 in the box and we have 3rd and 2, so… do you think I’m so super-smart that I’ll check to a pass? Or should we prove we’re men and punch you in the mouth anyway…? I don’t know the answer, but I often argued in the past that we should make an early and obvious play, like the 3rd and 2 run up the gut in the first quarter. If we get it, great. if not, then next time we give that look and pass (like the HUGE 1st down pass to Marvin late last season when everybody expected 18 to run on a keeper). Like a baseball pitcher, set them up for the NEXT time. Don’t give it away—try to succeed with the vanilla play, but next time…. change up and maybe get a big surprise.
This especially killed me during our 40 years in the desert (also known as the slump against the Pats). When their D showed about 15 pre-snap looks and 18 was doing his audible at the line thing—I wished 18 would just run the base play a few times, or run (in a Seinfeldian way) the OPPOSITE of what he thought was right, (A) to see if it works and (B) to set them up for uncertainty next time. When you’re down by 10 and struggling in a playoff game, doing the same-old is not necessarily the best idea.
“Hey, guys, when we show 8 in the box, 18 audibles to a short pass just before we all jump back into coverage and rush only three. Tee-hee! Anybody know a good way to get the fibers of Marcus Pollard’s jersey out of my teeth?” How many times did Bruschi and Vrabel and Roidney Harrison send that email back and forth in the offseason? It seemed to me (I may well be mistaken and 18 may never have changed his play call) that it happened a LOT in 2003/2004 and 18 often played right into their hands.
I think I am exaggerating this based on the frustration I felt. I don’t usually feel this way against other top D’s, like Pitt or Balt. But Karim, you are not alone in that frustration. I DO trust in Manning and Moore, however. If I had ten minutes with either one, this issue would surley come up, however.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

good points
But it’s always tough to know what’s really going on. Maybe Manning was messing around and wasn’t changing plays during those Pats games. I’m really just being a devil’s advocate, I feel the same way as you, but it’s always tough to know what’s going on there.
And the Costanza idea is brilliant (although late now). Manning should have just chosen the worst play possible to see what happens:
“My name is George, I’m unemployed and I live at my parents” – George Costanza….genius

I watched the first quarter again last night
Specifically the run plays.
There were two plays that a safety came in and made a tackle right at the line of scrimmage. I know on one play, Collie was the closest player there not already blocking anyone. The guy was passed him before he even realized what was going on. rookie mistake….it happens
on the Addai run where he fumbled, the backer blew up Dalla’s Clarks block and was all over him right as he met the o-line. If im not mistaken Addai just lost the ball as he ran into either Lilja or CJ.
hopefully this kind of stuff is just early season kinks that need worked out. we need to run the ball better for sure. maybe they should try some more north south runs……..obviously running on the outside isnt looking good, especially on the right side of the line

I have a question about our 3rd and 1 scheme.
Instead of trying to run up the gut with Addai, why don’t they use him as a reciever in those situations? He’s pretty good at doing that.

+1
or at least try something unexpected when they stack the line waiting for that QB sneak or the hand off.
like the naked bootleg in the Jags game a few years ago…..or whenever it was.
although i dont really dig seeing Big P scramble around much.

Addai injury
Ever since Addai got hurt almost 2 years ago, he just hasn’t had the speed to run outside anymore and he doesn’t have the power to run inbetween the tackles.

Two words for ya
Tarik Glenn.
O-line hasn’t been the same since he retired.
