Quick Recap: Colts 27-Dolphins 23

Let this be a lesson to you all: Running the ball and stopping the run are SECOND to throwing the ball, and stopping the throw. Run your wildcat, your draw, your runs up the middle. Run them all you want. It is all about being efficient with the football when it matters most. It is all about THROWING. THE. FOOTBALL. in this league. Time of possession is over-rated. Running the ball is over-rated. This is a league built on throwing and stopping the throw. Period.

When it counted. When it mattered most; the Colts came up big. Enjoy your 2-0 start.

Go Colts!

No, I think it is safe to say

that a lot more can be asked of the defense of an elite professional team like the Colts. Yes, the run D has GOT to improve.

Wow.

Heart rate is still above 120 right now probably. I tried to be calm when the Dolphins scored their last TD, thinking this game could get ugly. How about Donald Brown? And Garcon! Can’t believe they won.

I love manning, but

the Phins gave this one away completely. They took it from 3:30 to the two-minute warning and went about four yards. Manning scored a touchdown in less time than that.

Mmmm

In some ways, but there’s no guarantee they’d have scored if they’d run a more efficient drill.

Sorry BBS

And whoever else thinks this is “all right.” It’s fine for teams like Arizona and if we’re lucky, Houston. But all I’m seeing so far as a best case scenario for the Colts is another playoff shellacking by that pesky little Charger’s RB that’s built like a cheerleader. That, or Chris Johnson making us look like the Texans. Take your pick. This has got to get fixed before playoff time.

I was spellbinded into thinking that it might be Brees yet after seeing this comeback, then I’m back where I was in 2008. Peyton Msnning is the Best Player in the National Football League. Period. No Lucky breaks like Tommy got with the McKelvin fumble. He won this by his own sheer will. Defense did nothing other than hold the Dolphins to a Field Goal.

The Colts (and their fans) are going to fall into the same trap from the past...

This is a flawed team, deeply flawed, its been deeply flawed for years, and instead of being able to draft better talent (not disparaging Brown and Gonzo right now, but how would some OT depth look right now?) Manning has saved their skin time and again. This works in the regular season. It even works occassionally in the post season. But it can’t work consistantly vs the best of the best.

The Colts will need to focus money on their defense at this point. If Powers and Bullitt are as good as we and the Colts’ hope they are, can we still afford to let Bullitt or Sanders go and Jackson go? Having 3 safeties and 3 stud CBs seems to be a requirement for this team, since none of them can stay healthy.

The OL is a mess. After last week, I think maybe there was a great exhale where people said, ‘OK, the D is OK, we don’t need to spend a draft drafting 10 LBs and CBs, and we can focus on the OL’, they still need to fcous on the OL, and now I’m not sure they can. So many holes seem to be creeping up. Hopefully the Dline will play better in the future, I’m hoping that Big Ed just needs to get up to game speed and that Fili Maola (sp?) will be worthy of a #2, but the push in the middle was horrid, and its clear that while we have LBs that can tackle, they aren’t good at the POA. During Dungy’s years, it was always, ‘they don’t have to be good at the POA, they just have to be able to fill their gaps and tackle’. (This was Dungy-speak for ‘we just need the front 7 to stand in the way of the OL and let Bob make all the tackles), but with Coyer wanting to be a blitzing, more aggressive D, you’re leaving holes there, so each LB will have to be more effective at the POA, and they arent. Bob being back will help, but does anyone have faith in him being healthy for 12 games this year?

I hate to ruin the high for everyone, it was an exciting game, and good to get a win (hate to think of what the Cardinals will do to this D), but as a fan I’m just frustrated by the fact that it seems the best years of the best QB in the history of the NFL are going to be wasted by an iffy OL and an inconsistent-at-best, soft-at-worst D.

If we/they can get to the bye at 4-1, that would be great.

oh we blitzed

off the edge and not up the middle and on plays that werent wildcat plays. The way to beat the wildcat, is to blitz up the middle. Wedge bust the offensive line. Thats what the RAvens did and it worked. We didnt do anything close to that

by metal_militia on Sep 22, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

The way to beat the wildcat

Is to get a big push from the defensive line so that you take away their room to move, either up the middle or around the side.

We got owned on the line, so the wildcat worked.

by INDYCOLTSROCK18 on Sep 22, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

They did blitz

And the Phins ran away from it, constantly. They blitzed multiple times from the weakside, the phins would run strong side, and their line was winning at the POA. It was 2006 all over again, with their back sgetting 5 yars before being touched. Schematically, I’m not sure why they didn’t bring both Bethea and Bullitt into the box. I don’t think the Phins had any intentions of going deep. And obviously this sounds over simplistic, but let me just say, there are ways of disguising having your safety in the box. Delayed blitzes, last minute movement, etc…

Blitzing wasn’t really the problem. and if you’re referring to the final 2minuts, blitzing would have been the WORST thing. I don’t know if you’re a fan of the buckeyes or watch their games, but just rewatch v Texas last year and v Navy this year and see why you don’t go into a cover-1 or cover-0 situation when you’re up by 4 or more points. They needed a touchdown to win the game, you allow them the underneath stuff, not the one-on-one-make-a-guy-miss-and-score-the-winning-TD stuff.

this thread is killing my PC. I didn’t think he caught more. I realize that the colts didnt have the ball much, but according to Manning they were playing a S and LB bracket on Wayne + a CB in man. So basically tripling one person. Garcon has to have more than 1 catch against that kind of defense. I think he may develop, I’m not ruling it out, but I like Collie more from what I’ve seen (note: Collie was only 1 for 4 tonight, i know) but he has like a 100% third down conversion rate, i think, right? Thats big stuff from a rookie.

Mmmm

With so little time in possession, it’s hard to tell. I think both Garcon and Collie had chances to make more plays, but didn’t quite get it right.

You can’t expect kids to be NFL perfect straight away – even Megatron took a season to get going, and he was playing just about every down from the off.

yea i agree

I tried to convey that. Its not that I dont THINK he can be a #2, its just that I don’t think he’s there, yet.

btw, when the Colts got their 1st FG, on the 3rd down play, Manning hit Clark on a crossing route for 5 yards. Anyone else notice that Collie was breaking free on a seam down the middle? Would have been a big gain if Manning had a second more.

Collie play

I saw that too. The safety just collapsed on Clark and Peyton threw into double coverage instead of the easy TD to Collie on the hitch and go route once he beat the nickelback

by Daniel B on Sep 22, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I missed that

But it doesn’t surprise me, he looks capable. Peyton just needs to get in a groove with him (and Garcon).

Whwere was Baskett?

i haven’t checked the gamebook but was Hank inactive or just a special teams player tonight?

O ok

It will be nice once he gets integrated with the offense

ESPN language fail

“garcon” means boy in french, not waiter.

"Do I believe in aliens?" Stephon Marbury asked. "I don't know, because I've never seen one. But I believe in Jesus because I saw him in the shower the other day."

by KMR24 on Sep 22, 2009 12:36 AM EDT reply actions

Let's look at the bright side.

The defense can only get better from this point.

by Ayrshire on Sep 22, 2009 12:39 AM EDT reply actions

hopefully you are right

but i think part of being upset about the defense is that the team has made it public that its a priority to get things made right in the run D. i guess it would be different if they just came out and said they didnt give a shit. then you couldnt be upset when they get trampled.

As an aside

Was Pennington not like a foot pass the LOS on that drop by Ginn in the endzone?

by SpazMo on Sep 22, 2009 12:40 AM EDT reply actions

It looked close, but..

I believe you only need one foot behind the line, and it looked like he had that. But I’d need to see the replay to see for sure

by Jay Cutler's Barber on Sep 22, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

yea

thats the rule, I wasnt sure if the foot was behind the line or not. ESPN didn’t look at it at all (like they didnt mention Jake Long being a perfect 89 for 89 on false starts, or pass interference against Reggie, or the multiple holding Freeney and Mathis by the facemask, its just great pass protection, right jaws??) , so it was real hard to tell.

I Hope Gary Is Ok

In all my excitment i still hope Brackett witll be good to go next week so we don’t have to see a Freddy Kieaho disaster

by Colts Live Free or Die! on Sep 22, 2009 12:40 AM EDT reply actions

don't need either, I don't think

Its the Cardinals, if Jackson, Powers and Hayden are healthy (or Sanders), I think the Colts could go wit htheir Pay-Tree-Aughts defense (nickle and dime the entire game). To combat the passing attack of the Cards.

You're Right

I would hope for....

Wheeler but I wouldn’t hold my breathe. I have no faith in Keiaho but then I’m not running the Colts now am I?

offsides

Is it me or do we get more offsides penalties than anyone? Maybe I just pay attention to hem more with the Colts but it seems like it happens a lot, and not even just tonight but in general

by Colts Live Free or Die! on Sep 22, 2009 12:47 AM EDT reply actions

True

i just get frustrated at the freequency of it but like you essentually said it’s taking the bad with the good

by Colts Live Free or Die! on Sep 22, 2009 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

i actually..

Don’t ever remembering the Colts jumping this much. I thought they were one of the better teams at it. I’m HOPING that the reason for all of the offsides tonight was fatigue. The papercut ‘draw, wait 40 seconds, draw, wait 40 seconds, draw, wait 40 seconds’ offense makes it hard to stay in your DL stance. And the Phins were doing this weird 1/2 hard count. Like the hard count was at 2 and the snap was at 2 1/2 or the hard count was at 1 1/2 and the snap at 2. Either way, I’m hoping a lot of things from tonight were just a unique perfect storm that can’t be repeated until february.

Well I'm out for the night

Great that they won, but I think we’ll all agree they need a better performance next week and the rest of the season.

Dallas Clark is the leading receiver in the NFL after two weeks.

11 catches for 222 yards and a touchdown. Manning is third in the NFL in passing yards with 604, 10 more than Brady in 40 fewer attempts.

Manning is also second to Drew Brees in passer rating with 110.3

He’s fifth in completion percentage at 68.9%. Suprisingly Brett Favre leads the NFL in completion percentage with an uncanny 77.1% completion rate. Brees is still the best when it comes to stats though. 75% completion, 669 yards, 9 TD, 2 ints, and a ridiculous 132.9 Passer Rating.

not surprising if you wanted the Lions game

or calc up his yards per completion. it was under 7 in the Lions game. Mr. Dink and Dunk.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

I''m probably the only one

but i find it a bit amusing given Dolphin LB Crowder’s pre-game comments about the pretty lawn and the trailer in regards to Manning’s audibles, that we “won” the game on a brilliant audible by Manning.

I could watch the replays of this game

all night.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: My chemistry class decided to have their first test on Monday, September 21, from 8:00-9:00 PM. The Colts play the Dolphins at 8:30 that same night. I don't think I can be any more ticked off right now. I think I'm going to kill someone. No, really. I just haven't decided who yet.

I have to say it was an HONOR to watch this game with my friend from Ireland, Kevin Norton, at Brothers in Broad Ripple. He’s never seen an American Football game and he was pumped at how this game turned out. He saw two records broken: fastest score in MNF history, most games won by a Colts quarterback and the least amount of time possessed by a winning opponent. He will always be my Irish lucky charm!

forgive me, we had a few pitches tonight

Running the ball matters

And we did pretty good job today. But we couldn’t stop the run. I also hope Brackett is fine.
