Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Laughing-stock defense looms eternal

Dungy/Meeks, Caldwell/Collier, it's still a stinking pile.  What a shameful legacy.  Still can't find a way to get off the fucking field.

With PM as your QB, a Colts head coach inherits a powerful offense, leaving the defense as the primary concern.  Yet to date no head coach/defensive coordinator can put a decent D on the field (even though to be fair, it's Caldwell's first year).

In truth the Colts would be 0-2 if the Jags or Dolphins had remotely decent WRs; how many end-zone drops did the Dolphins have, three?  Thank God Pennington's passing range is 15 yards.  It's obvious that teams with explosive offenses (SD, Pittsburgh) are going to shred this dickless defense as has been the case for years.

The most inane stat cited to validate the Colts defense is that they only gave up six touchdown passes last year; that is so retarded; as was seen in this game, why bother passing when you can easily plow through this jello defense?  Remember Sproles last year?

Bottom line again: Please be outraged in that the team is squandering greatness.  QBs like PM come once a generation; once PM hangs it up, the Colts most likely won't see his like for a long time.  It hurts to see the poor guy be cheated out of his due, which is several Super Bowls, but try as he might, he can't do it alone (although he comes damn close).

Rant aside, is there anything that can be done?  Besides, for starters, replacing Chad Simpson.  And on the positive side, wasn't McAfee great?

McAfee is a strange place to put the lone bit of praise (though love for the O is implied)

showed lots of potential, but needs to work on the placement and getting the hangtime-distance balance right. 39 yard average.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

I loved the deep kickoffs that couldn't be returned

Hi Shake:

Felt I had to say something positive to offset my predictable rant about the so-called D.

by N Colter on Sep 22, 2009 1:15 AM EDT reply actions

there were a couple nice things to say about the D

Foster made a few big plays, impressive considering the big bodies got pushed around even worse.

They didn’t give up long runs a-la the 2006 Colts run D. Just (near)death by a thousand papercuts.

They tightened up towards the redzone forcing 4 mid to long FG attempts

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

Not ALL bad

3rd down defense continued to be a sore spot. If they continue to give up 1st downs on 3rd and long (what I consider anything over 5-6 yards), it will be a stressful season again. Also, tackling needs to be improved still.

Thank you for this fan shot.

Big Blue Shoe is wrong. Let this be a lesson to us? That stopping the run and running the ball is secondary?

Wrong.

We need a little more balance and our Defense needs to get off the field. PERIOD. In a playoff game this type of performance is result is rare because playoff teams usually have the balance to keep the ball away from Manning through the running game and better defense than what we saw last night from the Fins.

This post from a fan?

Today is not the time to be whining about our run defense.
Why can’t we enjoy this huge win and stop accentuating the negative, just for one day?
This is a team sport. When one side plays poorly, the other side steps up.
You have legimate worries about our D, but COME ON, NOT TODAY!
Last night was a win I’ll never forget, AND I’M GOING TO ENJOY IT!

The win is over...

time to move on Lori….it is really hard not to be critical of the D. A win is a win…but this is the SSDD syndrom that Colts fans have been dealing with for a while. We hear the same coach speak every time, whether it is Dungy or Caldwell. Gap control, no over pursuing, better tackling.

I do like your positive outlook on this dreary day in NC however!!

I'll move on tomorrow!

Not today, that’s not the way I enjoy football. I NEVER let the negative spoil a win. I’ll rant about our D in 24 hours! I’m glad my attitude brightened your day. Thanks.

I don't know

Where you got the fact that I didn’t enjoy it?

Look, it has been repeated time and again in other fanposts, so I won’t beleaguer the point.

A playoff opponent (i.e. Miami) beats us last night. We have to stop the run and get off the field and we need to be more balanced on offense.

Are you talking to me?

I’m confused here. Who are you replying to?

My comment about enjoying the game was directed to the writer of the post.

Not your comment.

Someone beat us last night?

Must’ve been a different game I saw. In mine we won. We have things that need dire improvement, but a playoff team didn’t beat us last night. Unless you are referring to some intangible moral victory or something. We won the game.

We did? Are you sure?

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: I blazed through my test in 20 minutes and sprinted back to my room just as the MNF theme song ended. Good thing too, with that 1st play. So, my streak of seeing every minute of every game since 2003 Tampa still stands. So, my Chem TA lives (for now).

this kinda weekend doesnt happen too often

patriots, titans, chargers, steelers all lost and the colts won!!…you get the 24 rule right keshawn…..i think this calls for a 48 hours of basking in the win

Peyton

is about a 50 or 60 point per game QB if the Colts have the ball half the time. The problem is almost always with defense. It’s seems to be a yearly thing. It’s too bad, because Peyton is a unique talent and should have at least 4 superbowl rings by now. Let’s get that defense going! Please Coyer, do something drastic! Get this problem fixed once and for all!!!

by Ayrshire on Sep 22, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

This year is a new scheme

and 2 games into the season, there is alot of promise… Did you think the problems would be fixed in a single offseason? If you did, you should get your head examined. The truth of it is, the Colts on offense had several bonehead plays in the Jags game. We gave away 2 TD’s in that game alone. Otherwise the defense played quite decent in that game. I cant even remember the last time we held the Jags under 100 yards rushing for any single RB.

As for the Dolphins game, you are overreacting still. The Colts gave up 200 yards rushing, against a team that was using max protect the whole game. They basically lined up in a traditional passing set yet once the ball as hiked, they had roughly 7-9 guys blocking on the line.

I got news for ya, that same offense walked thru some of the “better” defenses of the league last year….and guess what….one of the best in the league (Giants) gave up 200+ rushing yards and still won their game too.

The point here is that there has been REMARKABLE improvement in the defense overall despite missing some guys that are not starting or playing a high percentage of minutes (Jackson, Sanders, Powers).

Bottom line, if this was going on EVERY game of the year, I’d be worried. However, this to me looks like the Colts are improving.

We’ve given up 3 TDs in 2 games….the Giants gave up that many in one game. Shoot, the Ravens defense gave up 24pts in a single game to the Chiefs of all teams. I seriously doubt anyone here will say our defense is better than the Ravens or Giants…

Three of the top 4 best defenses in football from last year, (Steelers, Ravens, Eagles, Titans (Colts were 6th in total defense)) all have given up more points than us. Only the Steelers have given up fewer points than the Colts from that list.

Ravens 50
Titans 47
Eagles 58
Steelers 27

Just saying you might want to give the team a chance to play it out before you jump off half cocked…

Quick correction

That’s scoring defense, not total defense!
