Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hey Colts fans, Andrew here from Revenge of the Birds. Just stopping by to answer any questions you may have about the Cardinals. Great Monday night football game by the way. Anyway, if you have any questions leading up until this Sunday nights game, drop them here and I usually answer pretty quickly. Here's some questions I might be able to answer ahead of time:

  • Yes we still believe Matt Leinart is the quarterback of the future for Arizona. He looked a lot better this preseason.
  • Beanie Wells is the real deal. The man can run. He just needs to hold onto the football better.
  • Last week we may have finally found the offense we had last year. I think the loss of offensive coordinator Todd Haley, gave us an adjustment period.

was it simply losing haley that gave the Cards struggles

or was it a combination of him and the 49er defense during week 1?

by metal_militia on Sep 23, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah we'll see how great this 49er defense is against the Vikings and Peterson on Sunday.

But I blame the loss of Haley, the health of Boldin, and Breaston not playing on the poor offense in week 1.

He's playing like he should be.

Still learning but you can see his tremendous upside. The guy is usually the fastest player on the field and eventually will turn into a shut down corner.

I think that is Andrews way of saying he isn't the "shutdown" corner SOME people were calling him in the off season

I think he has been playing off his receiver and trying to hard to induce a big play and he needs to just cover his man. He could be a shut down corner some day but not this year.

Of course corner is the hardest position on the field to become proficient at…

8 sacks so far and counting . I’d say our pass rush was one of the biggest improvements from last year. B Mac is doing pretty great IMO and compliments DRC’s speed well.

No

Colts opponents are averaging 3.5 penalties a game, lowest in the league.

by KDean75 on Sep 23, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

you might want to look by a per play basis

I bet the lopsided TOP and number of plays last week skew the numbers pretty hard with only 2 games to go off of.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

They got the Phins for 12 men on the field

Peyton caught them subbing. That’s more common that offsides jumps

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

since this is an "Ask" thread I'll put a question off that

Do the Cards make many personnel changes on D? 3rd down specialists, 2 down LBs or DTs, etc?

If the offense doesn’t sub they don’t have to give the defense time to, and since the Colts can run a wide variety of formations with the same personnel thanks to Wayne, Addai and especially Clark being very flexible, and use small O linemen who rarely have conditioning issues, they don’t sub on offense often.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

on third downs and obvious passing situations they do quite a bit of subbing as most teams do

Normally it involves bringing in an extra safety or Berry coming into the game.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Sep 23, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Lately they've been subbing D lineman

Which has been working fairly well so far. I am worried about offsides for the most part because some of our D line try to predict snap counts. Which would be dumb against Peyton. I’d imagine they will figure out their substitutions ahead of time and play smart against the Colts.

this isn't a rate stat

It’s a counting stat. Week 1, your opponent had 3 penalties, week 2, 4 penalties.

In 2008 your opponents averaged 4.2 penalties a game, lowest in the league.

by KDean75 on Sep 23, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I know it was a counting stat

I suggested maybe a rate stat would be more telling since the Colts are always at or very near the bottom in number of drives/plays run. Teams shorten the game against the Colts, because they run the ball more often than usual. Which reduces the opportunities for penalties, but makes each count more because there are less drives in the game so giving free yardage on one of them makes a bigger impact.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

these are total team penalties, whether accrued against your offense or defense. so a holding call on the Dolphins, let’s say, would be a part of that.

by KDean75 on Sep 23, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

so not the best measure of how many defensive penalties Peyton draws with the quick snaps and hard counts.

Ideally I’d want to see per play rates for just defense to see if it’s a significant amount more or less than usual.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

How is that?

You’ve shown nothing to prove that Peyton is drawing off the defense multiple times a game. I’ve shown that over two games and last year, the colts as a team draw roughly 4 penalties a game. Which ranked last in the NFL last year and is currently tied for last for this year.

I’m not trying to prove how many penalties a game Peyton draws with his awesomeness. I’m saying that by using some stats, I’m not worried about Manning drawing the Cards offsides multiple times during the game.

I'm not the OP for this series

I’ve just been pointing out that the numbers cited aren’t very good measures of the effect Peyton may or may not have on offsides/12 men penalties.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

What stats would you use then?

by KDean75 on Sep 23, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think what Shake is pointing out...or finding an interest in is:

If you take the number of times the opposing defense has been called for being offsides, and also look at the number of possessions by the Colts (which is a league low) you will see an average which is higher than just the # of offsides per game reflects.

Is this what you’re looking at Shake?

again I'm not the OP

I’m not saying, and didn’t say I believe it will be an issue other than making subs more tricky. I’m just saying that the numbers you posted aren’t all that relevant to the question because they are skewed by the Colts having very few drives and are full of random noise from ST and O penalties also being included. Data that bad isn’t any better than ancedotes. It’s like saying the Colts or Cards running game wasn’t bad last year and citing total offense. Unfortunately rushing yards or YPC aren’t easily available in this case.

I’ll cite great data for the claim I did make.

"You can't defend the perfect throw, what can I say?" Peyton quoting Marino

by Indy Lori on Sep 23, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

Freeney is excellent and will be an issue.

I think part of the improvement in the Cards offense in Week 2 was the use of the short passing game. I think this is instituted specifically to mitigate the crappiness of our tackles in pass protection. And it seems to piss off Larry Fitzgerald’s brother a lot.
Also to keep Warner to short, 3 step drops over longer 5 and 7 step drops.

The O line played better last week and didnt allow a sack

Obviously the Jags d line is not as good as the Colts so I hope we’d see some tight end help and chip blocks from running backs. anything to help basically.

Dallas Clark

We have fairly old linebackers, aside from Karlos Dansby. So covering a quick tight end may prove to be a problem. Most of us think a physical players such as Adrian Wilson or Bryant McFadden will try to cover him.

He spreads the field and enables Fitz and Q to make plays,

Hadn’t thought of it until now but this may contribute to YAC. Did I mention he had over 1000 receiving yards last year? He would be a solid number 2 on most every other team in the league.

Whatever happened with Alan Branch?

Some of us were hoping the Colts would draft him a few years ago when he fell all the way to us, but it looks like he hasn’t done anything yet with the Cards.

they've actually semi-moved him to DE and he's had the best two games of his career thus far

Of course by “best two games” I mean that they’re really the only two games of his career that he’s been relevant but still they’re finally getting something out of him, but it’s not as the dominant DT/NT we were hoping for.

The Cardinals are favored by 2

does that sound right (Colts are a point better, but Cards get 3 for homefield) or should I be nervous again about sportsbooks begging for bets on the Colts?

by shake n bake on Sep 23, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds right to me.

Tough Sunday night game on the road, long airplane rides, and a Colts team that looks like (to outsiders) to have mucho grande problems. If I was Vegas, I would expect a pick-em for the game to yield mostly Cardinals bets. Actually, the line seems a little low. To me, it almost looks like they are begging for bets on the Colts. That would be a reason to feel comfortable going into the game.

Anyway, that’s my opinion of it. Take of it what you will. I can already tell you that I’ll be picking the Colts SU which obviously means that I don’t think the Cards will cover. Vegas made it easy this week unlike the past 2 weeks when I had to guess whether the Colts would cover or not (I was right both times.).

My Dads a big sports better(i help him and im like 25-15 i think since last year(= )and he took the colts. The line started at 3. Then up to 3.5, then down to 3 again. Ending with a small rise close to game time, at colts -3.5

The colts won by 4 so they covered

Hope you can answer it

It may be too late, but my question is this:

Manning just put up outreal numbers, including the most impressive 2 stats( a Win, and 27 points in 15 mins)

How do you expect your D to hold Manning down, since you obviously cant keep him on the field as little as miami did. If he gets his usual 24-25 mins, can you score enough to keep up?

well considering that the Cards had the third best scoring offense last season

I don’t think we ever worry about ‘scoring enough.’ This might be a “whoever has the ball last” type of game but the Cards offense is just as explosive and Manning and the boys.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Sep 24, 2009 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn't the Jags hold your offense to 12 points?

No offense but the Colts aren’t an offensive juggernaut. I think Miami’s secondary isn’t as good as ours. Manning will get his usuall passes and scores but I think our defense will throw a lot of blitzes his way. So far Bill Davis(our defensive coordinator) has been efficient at creating valid blitzes. We’re 2nd in the league so far with 8 sacks. I think it will just come down to who has the ball last.

The Colts really helped the Jags D, and the Colts game really helped the Cards last week

two fluky turnovers (bad throw/decision from Peyton and Addai’s 5th fumble in over 900 touches) while deep in Jags territory. They gave away 10-14 points on their first two drives in a way that’s unlikely to be repeated.

In the 4th quarter of the Jags game their best (read:only good) pass rusher broke his leg and went down for the season. That’s probably why they got a bit of pressure against the Colts, and no pressure against the Cards.

Yeah thats very true

Ever since Manning grew out of his 25 INT’s a year phase when he was younger, the colts have been in th top of hte league in fewest turnovers.

And we lose 2 touchdowns against the jags. oh and we scored 14 not 12 buddy.. but yeah, it was 1 bad game, and on a normal game manning throws pics in the middleish of the field, not in the endzone

About the transportation

I cant seem to find it anywhere, I am taking a bus to phoenix this weekend as I am going to the game.

Will there be any bus routes available after the game? or will I have to spend a lot on a taxi? I am willing to pay for that but I will arrive on bus and maybe I could depart that way too.

If there are no bus routes, are there enough taxis available after the games?
