Week 3: Wednesday Injury Report

6 players sat out today's practice, all of them starters (5 injured plus a day off for Freeney).

Bob Sanders remains out and it's probably safe to call him a scratch for Sunday if he isn't at practice tomorrow given that among the Colts few public statements on Sanders' injury was a requirement that he got some practice time in before they'd let him back on the field for real. Obviously Anthony Gonzalez is also out.

Gary Brackett (knee), Clint Session (ankle) and Kelvin Hayden (hamstring) also sat out. Jerraud Powers was back at practice. Both Hayden and Powers expect to play according to Oesher.

Update:  Cards report

Starting right tackle Levi Brown was limited in practice, 3rd WR Steve Breaston sat out, as did starting OLB Chike Okefor, and backups Kenny Iwebema (DE) and Ali Highsmith (OLB). Backup SS Matt Ware was limited.

I'm not that afraid of Gary not playing

I’m afraid of Freddie Keiaho playing…If Session sits, we’ll probably see Phillip Wheeler, which isn’t supposed to be that bad. I just don’t wanna see Freddie Keiaho nor Tim Jennings play more than special teams.

Go Colts!

Keiaho

I would much rather see him at WILL than MIKE if one of the starters was injured. But since we have no real backup at MIKE, Frederick has to be the guy.

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

Actually his name is Naivote Taulawakeiaho,

not Frederick haha…I’m Federico which is the spanish version of Frederick

Worst Nightmare

for me is GB not playing this week. Freddy K will get abused in pass coverage against the Cards and Senn won’t be a factor anyway because he will be a STer only.

At least Powers is going to be out there. That helps a lot if Gary can’t go.

Powers

Glad to hear he’ll be out there

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Sep 23, 2009 6:52 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Don't you think we're overhyping this rookie?

He can make mistakes too… still, I’d have half a Powers insted of 3 Jennings

Go Colts!

that's all we care about

Powers will make mistakes, but he is showing great promise. Jennings is a lost cause at this point.

by hoosierdore on Sep 23, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't think so

the Colts altered their gameplan because he wasn’t out there. There was a lot of aggressive man-to-man play against Jax because they trusted Powers and Hayden to make those plays. Obviously the same doesn’t go for Jennings. To me, it was as if they flip flopped the defensive philosophy completely. I want the week 1 defense back.

A mixed bag of news in this injury report.

Lets see:

  • Powers returned to practice. That’s excellent. I had a feeling that it was just a minor injury. I’m glad I was right, because if Powers didn’t play, Fitzgerald was going to have a big day.
  • Day-to-day on Gary Brackett’s knee-type injury. I don’t know what to make of this, because the Colts are, as usual, bullish on not releasing injury details. If he doesn’t play however, it is really huge. Gary is probably the most underrated MLB in the league. Nobody on this team (or anybody off the street) can do what Brackett does. I guess we should consider ourselves fortunate that the Cardinals don’t have terribly good TE’s (like Antonio Gates) and that Boldin is injured. Those should mitigate the damage from Brackett’s disappearance.
  • Hayden says that he tweaked his hammy (see: Phil B’s blog) and should play Sunday. That’s great news. We need him and Powers to stop the Cards passing attack.
  • Session is in a walking boot. When the heck did that happen? Anyway, we should have at least a capable backup in Hagler (who would switch to Session’s side) and Phillip Wheeler (who would take Hagler’s spot.). I’m not terribly concerned about that.

The injuries are starting to pile up for the defense while the offense (save Gonzo) remains mostly untouched. If we can get through 1 or 2 more games without any more injuries, the Colts should be fully healthy again.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: I blazed through my test in 20 minutes and sprinted back to my room just as the MNF theme song ended. Good thing too, with that 1st play. So, my streak of seeing every minute of every game since 2003 Tampa still stands. So, my Chem TA lives (for now).

Cass, thanks for doubting my DVRing skills and double-checking with Phil B during his chat last night! I would never, ever, ever lie to anyone! Unless it was for sex or money.

I know you are joking,

but it had nothing to do with you. I just wanted to hear it from 2 people. If Shake or DZ (the 2 fans’ opinions I respect the most) had said they saw Hayden out of bounds, I still would have wanted confirmation from at least one other person. With that kind of big news (which turned out to be correct), I always feel more comfortable hearing it from more than 1 observer.

Hayden

also came out for two plays in the first quarter. It seems like it’s more of a nagging thing that maybe just needs to be perfectly loose at all times. Like right now, I have a hamstring issue that I can’t run on under some circumstances, but am fine with at other times. And it’ll pop up during a workout sometimes and annoy me, but not ever get out of hand. I’m no pro athlete of course, but my hope is that it’s just something like that. What that means, of course, is that if he plays through it it won’t ever get to 100%, but also that if he’s careful, it won’t ever be knocked down to 0% either.

Or it could be something completely different. Who knows. I’m totally guessing here.

Sounds good to me.

It’s as good an explanation as I’ve heard yet.

for my next act

I’m going to invent a reason why Big Ed Johnson being pushed around last week was a one week issue related to sleep deprivation and low blood sugar.

I can't remember what's wrong with....

Fili….what happened to Moala that has been inactive the first two…??

We need him for rotation, I guess. He needs to get his feet wet. If healthy.
Which apparently he is not.

Can someone remind what happened to him??

by CaribbeanColt on Sep 23, 2009 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

No idea

I just hope it isn’t a sign of things to come (knock on wood). In time, he will be a major part of the future success of this defense.

I believe it was an undisclosed knee issue.

But he wasn’t listed on any injury reports last week, so apparently he’s healthy now and was inactive for Miami because they decided he would be the least likely to help them win.

Hopefully it won’t become a trend.

by shoein on Sep 23, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

For the Jags game it was probably the knee that had him missing practice that landed him on the inactives

For the Phins it was probably that he was the least integrated into the system. Foster had been through 2 TCs and a full season. Muir a season and a TC, Mookie half a season and a TC, Moala just had this years Training Camp to adjust back to being a 4-3 DT (he was a 3-4 end as a senior) and learn the Colts system. Polian has talked about the learning curve that Moala is facing. I think he’s on a Colts linebackers schedule, rather than an instant impact one.

Warner and Boldin

Also did not practice today.

I’m sure it’s no big deal. Hammy for Boldin, old man arm for Warner.

thanks for the reminder

I forgot to add there’s. Got out of the habit when I couldn’t find the corner of the Dolphins site where they hide their injury reports.

Though the one on the Cards site lists Boldin and Warner on the report, but as Full Participation.

Freeney

I tell you what, that man DESERVES a day off after how hard he worked. 85 plays of pure heart and made a key tackle on the Dolphins game-losing drive.
