Quick Recap: Colts 31-Cardinals 10

This was a case of one team simply out classing another. This is not a swipe or a knock on the Cardinals. They are not a crappy team. They'd surrendered an average of 56 rushing yards prior to this game. They have an impressive passing attack. They have an excellent kicker.

But they went up against a Colts team that has re-discovered the big play.

The Colts ranked up over 500 yards of offense on the Cardinals, including over 120 yards rushing. Defensively, the Colts held the Cards to 24 total yards rushing and only 2.2 yards a carry. They harassed Kurt Warner all night, forcing the Cardinals into three turnovers.

No word yet on Dwight Freeney's leg injury. He walked off the field and into the locker room and seemed to be OK. We will see if everything is all right with Freeney, who dominated Arizona's tackles all night.

This was a dominant performance by the Colts in primetime, which is business as usual. Enjoy the win.

Go Colts!

Cardinals actually ran 4 more plays than the Colts

7.7 Yds/Play vs. 4.6 Yds/Play.

Excellent, dominating game. There isn’t a team in the NFL, right now, that is better than the Colts. I’m glad the Colts play the other 3-0 teams in the AFC, as they are all good matchups for the Colts as well.

The Pass Defense is the best in the NFL. I don’t think we’ll be hearing any chirping from Nashville about how their secondary is better than the Colts. The backups are better than 3/4 of the league.

by mgrex03 on Sep 27, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

It's not really the secondary

It’s the pass rush. When Warner had time to throw, he made plays more often than not and most of his non-plays were a result of receiver error.

We just completely owned their offensive line.

I was actually going to make a fan post about something you mentioned

Amazing how getting rid of an out of his prime (being kind) Harrison (and maybe Gonzo? not willing to say that yet, though) has returned the Colts offense to explosive. Probably equal parts receiver that can get open and lilja being able to block?

Anyhow, its much better than the 51 passes for 242 yards Manning was putting up last year.

by SpazMo on Sep 27, 2009 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

Can somebody put Colinsworth out of my misery?

Dude needs an ice pick stuck in his ear when he is working Colts games. When he is working the other teams, I like him, but he has some kind of problem with the Colts that is REALLY pissing me off.

by tim55 on Sep 27, 2009 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

No offense

But isn’t it more likely that you’re just seeing the game through your own bias, and his neutrality is annoying you?

by eltharion_doa on Sep 27, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

He is definitely biased

He hates the Colts for some reason but tonight he wasn’t bad. The only thing that he said that was weird was that Dwight Freeney was the MVP of tonight’s game, and not Peyton Manning. That would usually be understandable but he really emphasized the NOT in front of peyton’s name when he said it. Weird. Oh….that, and the fact that he apparently is physically attracted to Donald Brown. “Wow. Donald Brown is just a good lookin kid.” Exact words. Creepy.

by npb1985 on Sep 27, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

He definitely doesn't like them

Hate may be too strong a word, but I’ve listened to him for a while now and he always seems to look for reasons to undermine us, especially Peyton.

by npb1985 on Sep 28, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you're just being biased

Anyone who isn’t an irrational homer around here gets labelled a Colts hater. It’s silly.

by eltharion_doa on Sep 28, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Are you kidding me?

If you do not think he is at least slightly anit-Colts, you have not been listening to him long. He was fine tonight, but for the better part of his career as an analyst he has undermined the Colts constantly. If you had ever listened to him, you’d know that. He has gone out of his way to say Brady is better than Manning numerous times. That ’07 season he acted like it was a joke any time Manning was mentioned in the same sentence as Brady.

by npb1985 on Sep 28, 2009 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I only hate one announcer

And thats Deirdorf. I don’t generally label people ‘pro’ colts or ‘anti’ colts, etc..

here’s what I noticed tonight from Collinsoworth: One Bullits break up of a play early in the first quarter, where Bullit was going for the ball, Collinsworth screamed for PI. On an identical play later in the game by the Cards, Collinsworth praised the Ari DB. Each time the Colts made a big play (either a pass break uip, interception, fumble recovery, sack) instead of commenting on the play he would say, ‘that should have been PI’, ‘Jennings got there early’, ‘Why run it with hightower’, etc…

Okay, okay, at this point you’re saying, ‘omg dude, you sound like a high school chick, calm down!’

But here’s the rub: It only went one way. When the Colts would do something right, Collinsworth poopooed it or said there should be a flag. When the Cards got flagged, he would criticize the officials. When they were talking early in the game about the good cards O-line, they would flash shots of the Cards violating Freeney/Mathis, he wouldn’t say anything (again, I don’t care if he doesn’t want to comment on officiating, but he clearly was okay to criticize the officials penalties that beneiftted the Colts’.) Hell, even the one holding penalty they called he was like, ’ Well, he had to hold him there’. As if he felt that should absolve him or something.

It was really weird to hear that from an announcer. Generally, I think annoucners get called ‘biased’ because they alwys over emphasize for whomever has the ball, but it wasnt the case tonight.

by SpazMo on Sep 28, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you're completely misreading

The holding comment. He’s commenting that Freeney is so dominant that the only way the O-line could slow him down was to use an illegal hold.

by eltharion_doa on Sep 28, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

nah

I mean, I understand what you’re saying, and really, thats one sentence out of a manuscript that I typed. Like I said, I don’t sweat announcers, hell, last week they were a little too pro manning for my liking. There was definitely a weird vibe from Collinsworth tonight, which is why his ‘Hey, that Donald Brown is pretty good looking, huh’, comment on a 4 yard loss, was sort of odd. It was out of nowhere, wasn’t in stream of game, wasn’t even really relevant. It was almost like what was unfolding before CCs eyes finally caught up to his brain and he was like, ‘oh, shit, the Colts actually look good tonight, let me mention this!’

by SpazMo on Sep 28, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I concur

He just seems to hold them at arm’s length, like smelly socks. He’ll ignore 4-5 things they have done well and then praise the opponents who have done just one thing well. That’s my, possibly biased, view.

I assumed he meant "a good looking runner"

as opposed to, you know, “they’ve got a good looking tight end… he-he-he.”

CC still bites IMO—early in the game he proclaimed three three-and-outs when the Colts just had a 1st down. I pointed it out to my 8 year-old who said “why to they hire him for that job if he’s so bad.” I explained that there are worse guys….

I agree.

I liked Collinsworth in this game. I said before the season when he was named the successor that aside from his man-crush on the 2007 Patriots, I thought he was an excellent color guy and would do a great job in place of Madden. I got ripped for it.

Very nice to go in, take care of business in a convincing fashion, and move on. An early game next week against Seattle. Don’t need a slip up in that game.

Best parts of the game...?

It COULD have been when CC said Freeney was the game’s MVP or when he said “It’s just embarrassing” when Freeney dismantles Gandy.

Or it could have been the self-mockery of the Favre TV commercial.

Or Brown’s 72 yard catch and run. I keep telling my kids that the 3 best safeties in the NFL are Troy P, Ed Reed, and Bob S. The Cards Adrian Wilson is really beloved at FO, but either 18 was reading his mind, or he was out of position about 80% of the time tonight.

Wayne had a psychotic catch. Warner, I have to admit was superhuman in getting the ball out to avoid sacks a couple times. Like a no-arm knuckjle ball he was wrapped up and somehow the ball shot out for an INC instead of a sack.

Let’s hope 93 is okay. A week off vs Seattle wouldn’t be too bad. he sure owned the game tonight.

Special teams wasn't so hot

Nearly blocked PAT, missed FG, mediocre return game. We should either call fair catch for most punts or just let the refs mark 10 yds off from the spot of the catch and take the ball there. Really, how hard can it be to not block a guy when you’re behind him?

Fortunately, both the offense and defense make special teams a non-factor in this one.

by nmbrthry on Sep 28, 2009 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

offense

10.8 yards per pass
4.1 yards per rush

7.65 yards per play.

Not bad considering:

there was an interception
there was a kneel down
2 or 3 3 and outs to start the game
the Colts were able to kill the clok at the end of the game

Great Win Not Sure About Dominant

I know that the numbers say that we owned but i don’t know about you guys but I thought it was a pretty good game for 2-2.5 quarters.

by Colts Live Free or Die! on Sep 28, 2009 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe, but the deck was stacked against us in a big way

The D played and got beaten up for 45 minutes last week, on a short week, and had 2 consecutive road games. We were in their house. They were slightly favored in Vegas. We were not expect to shut them down. I think a 14 pt win would have been looked at as pretty dominant. So to play about even for a half, and then just crush them the other half, that’s pretty huge. (And IMO, it was close for about a quarter, no more.)

People will always hate on Addai

And it’s always been irrational and obnoxious. It was worst when people wanted Rhodes who had the same ypc to start over him.

"Brett Favre was a man who thought he was retired, but he knew it wouldn't last."

by Colts Homer on Sep 28, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

The thing with Addai

Is that every time he has a good play, quarter or game, Brown comes in and does something better. So you’re never really sure if Addai’s getting back to form, or if it’s just an AN Other Back situation.

He’s clearly not the same back he was in his first two seasons for us. That, of cours, doesn’t mean he can’t be useful. He was very good today, but so was Brown until he got given the thankless task of rushing into the 8 man fronts at the end.

by eltharion_doa on Sep 28, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

It seemed to my untrained eye that

Addai spent a LOT of time in the film room on how NOT to run to the sidelines tonight. He seemed to find his lanes much better tonight, was real decisive and quick to hit. I only saw him hesitate on one run tonight. It was like it was 2006 all over again.

by SpazMo on Sep 28, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

He doesn't have the second gear he had back then

But he is definitely being more decisive…then again, I think we opened better holes then we often do tonight (and last week). I suspect a lot of his indecision and juking around last season came from the fact we couldn’t runblock to save a puppy.

re: run blocking

Run blocking was better tonight. Does anyone remember a 2006 stat, something like 80% of the Colts runs (im making it up, but it was a real big %) went left side. That was behind Glenn, obviously, but I think we’re going to be seeing something similar this year. Diem and/or Pollak don’t seem to be holding up very well at the POA. Hell, the stretch even worked to the left tonight.

by SpazMo on Sep 28, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Addai had a good game but like eltharion_doa said, Brown keeps showing him up. My girlfriend was texting me throughout the game jabbing me about how Addai looked good. I kindly reminded her that yeah he looked good, but those 10 yard gains Addai was making would be 20+ if Brown was out there. Low and behold, Brown comes into the game and has a 71 yard reception.

Nevertheless, Addai has looked better this season than the past two that’s for sure. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Brown needs more touches, period.

Is that we seem to ride Addai in the first half, and Brown in the second. Surely it’d make more sense to switch them in and out from series to series to keep them both fresh?

Well they really aren’t being worked all that much anyways. The Colts’ offense has been so pass heavy that they really haven’t had a chance to break a sweat all season. They can’t expect to have the same success on offense all season long relying on the pass like this. You need not look any further than least season to figure that one out.

I can understand disappointment, but some of the insults generated his way were ridiculous. He is a very good running back. Give him a hole and he will bust through. Him and Donald will be dangerous weapons as long as our line holds up. I am a little bitter at his performance tonight because he was on my bench in fantasy and it cost me a win.

Vinateri

Awesome game today. Offensively and defensively. My only concern at this point lies with our FG kicker. He has been a model of inconsistency for the past two years. Is his injury still lingering? Or is he still languishing over his TV commecials on Adam Nugateri? Should be something else that I can’t post because I’m a hardcore Colts fan..

by Greensburg on Sep 28, 2009 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah....

That was unsettling. But remember he is still coming off hip surgery. I think if we really need it, he’ll split the uprights. Still, though, he needs to hit those.

I’d put more faith in a Peyton to Wayne catch than I would Vinatieri kicking a 40 yard field goal.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: The Atlanta Falcons are the only NFL team to never have back-to-back winning seasons in franchise history.

OMG

We have almost twice as many comments on the recap an hour after the game as they had for the single game open thread at Revenge of the Birds. They had 120 comments the WHOLE Game….we averaged four times that every QUARTER

I said it earler...

The Cards fans didn’t even have a game thread all day. What are we up to now? 2000? 3000?

And you guys did that without me

for the actual Colts game. As you probably know, I’m an extremely heavy commenter during open threads.

Can't comment during Colts game threads.

Way too nervous pacing around the room. Only able to squeeze out a comment or 2 at 18to88 during commercial.

I just looked over there

No surprise, they’re complaining about the refs not calling anything for them, and the fact Cris Collinsworth hates them.

Some things are the same everywhere.

be fair

it’s not like their team has done anything relevant the last few season, so you can’t expect them to have dedicated fans.

Wait…

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close."
