Five Things I Think I know: Week 3 Edition

Lots of things to be happy about from yesterday. One thing to that has our finger hovering over the panic button. Lets get to the five starting with the latter.

1.) I think that the Colts can survive a few weeks without Freeney (barring the injury isn't serious. "knock on wood*). When Freeney went down the first time, the Colts were still somewhat ok defensively since Mathis and Brock were alright. When they got nicked, the pass rush completely dissappeared. Also, Coyer has shown that he could work around a defensive line that cant get pressure (look back to his days in Denver). Thats the reason we brought him in for right? More blitzing. If Freeney is our for the season, our superbowl hopes almost certainly go down with it.

2.) I think this offense is going to be really explosive when Gonzo gets back. Not that it hasn't been these first three weeks (sans Jax, but that can be chalked up to fluke turnovers) but after seeing what Collie and Garcon did last night, and if they continue to progress as the season goes on, there is no telling how good this offense can be. Factor in the resurgence in the running game and man my mouth is drooling

3.) I think the same could be about the defense. If they continue to play the way they did last night, the sky is the limit. Once Brackett, Hayden, Bobzilla, and now Freeney (PLEASE BE OK!!!) get back I expect to see a huge spike in the defenses peformance. We saw a rare glimps of our DT's making plays in the passing as well as what we expected them to do in the run game. If the DT's can play the pass as well as the run the way they did last night, it could really help minimize the damage of losing Freeney for a short period of time (I hope "knock on wood again*),

4.) I think the Colts need to start either looking for a new kick/punt returner in the draft or really start coaching these guys to learn how to block on returns. Your doing a great job so far coach Rychleskie on the coverage units, but you have to fix the blocking on the return units. It seemed like everytime something positive happened on the returns last night, they were wiped out by a penalty. Peyton can drive down the field regardless of where the ball is placed, but he cant do it all the time. Give the offense a little space.

5.) I think Dallas Clark will finally make it to the probowl this year. He is playing lights out and is just such a matchup problem. Match him up against a corner, safety or LB and you get burned because he is either too physical or too fast. Add to the fact that he is such an underrated blocker and has the ability to do end-arounds (really what other TE can do that? it takes a lot of speed thats why WR can do it. I think its a testiment to how fast Clark really is) and you practically have a guy that can do everything.

Thats my five. lets hear from you guys who could most likely do a better job than me

MY top 5

1. The o-line is still doing its job pass protecting thats a relief. The run blocking is half and half. I still hate the fact for da second weak in a row charlie johnson doesnt run people over when they run 2 his side and he’s got a defender 1 on 1 with a running back behind him and he ends up stomping his feet . Yet overall the line has been good

2. Donald Brown has something Addai doesnt. That EXPLOSION when the o-line catapults him through those holes

3.Melvin Bullit keeps on impressing me (against probably the best receiving corp) hopefully he can turn as good as bethea is. crossing finger for 3/4 as good as bob sanders..

4. Collie is offically our 3rd down receiver on occasion and Garcon is the deep threat

5. Wayne is sick, Clark is 2 nice, and Garcon had Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie speaking french allll night

re:2

Does Gonzo make the field when he’s 100%? Im not attempting to underestimate him or overestimate the youngsters, but hear me out. Gonzo is a more complete player than either Collie or Garcon. But thats mostly because he can play inside and outside, is a veteran, knows the playbook, and has trust with Peyton. I think just from a ‘what God gave ya’ standpoint, Garcon is more talented, and Collie and Gonzo are close. One thing that I think both of them do better than Gonzo is block. This is only through 3 games, but both of them block like their roster spot is dependent on it. I still think Garcon has a ways to go to be a complete receiver. He’s scored on a go route and a bubble screen, things that make the most of his speed. Still needs to work on his route running and both he and Collie are probably still finishing up with the playbook.

And, finally, by the time Gonzo comes back, if its 8 week down the road (well, week 9), Garcon and Collie would have gotten their baptism by fire and will hopefully have developed that trust with Peyton. I was thinking ‘it would be neat to have a 4 WR set that didnt include someone like Aaron Moorehead’, but honestly, would you want to take Addai/Brown and/or Clark off the field, just to get Wayne / Collie / Garcon / Gonzo on the field?

Dallas should deffinatly make it to the Pro Bowl because...

Tony Gonzelez went the NFC so that should help. I think he was a lot of the reason Dallas has gotton close but not made it.

You can't replace Freeney or overstate his importance.

However, what will help is if our DTs can get the kind of pressure that Ed Johnson was last night. That will help Mathis and whoever on the outside.

I need 10 things to list.

Last week D stood for disaster, this week D stood for dominance.
Vinaitieri can kick a football right into your living room. (I didn’t know a kick was good if it hit the camera, good to know).
Dallas Clark and Peyton have something really special going on together, the last 2 weeks I’ve noticed them communicating to each other with their eyes. They are on the same page like crazy.
Reggie Wayne is worth his weight in gold. He and Donald Driver are the only 2 receivers in the league with 1000 plus yds in the last 5 yrs. Plus he saved an interception Sunday night.
I love how the offense is using the end around play.
McAfee needs to work on pinning teams back.
Rogers-Cromartie got schooled by the Colts.
Bullit and Bethea really stood out to me on defense.
Collinsworth is annoying the hell of out of me on Sunday Nights.
One last thing, Watching Peyton Manning at the line of scrimmage, moving around yelling out instructions, changing plays, gesturing, etc.,is a like good art, you just can’t take your eyes off it. ( I love being a female fan, I can get away with saying things like that.)

Here's my five, like anyone gives a shyte

1. Peyton Manning for president in 2012.
2. Garcon is doing the job the Roy Hall was supposed to. Early yet, put Garcon has big upside to go with his big straight arm.
3. I love me some end around.
4. Any time a defense holds an NFL offense to 24 yards rushing, that defensive came up huge.
5. Addai and The Donald break 150 yds. rushing next week. Maybe even 200 yds. all purpose.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: The Atlanta Falcons are the only NFL team to never have back-to-back winning seasons in franchise history.
