Let's get real.....

  • We have an outstanding passing offense this year.
  • The running offense is doing better, but still not nearly where I would like for it to be.
  • Our offensive line is doing pretty well. It's held up fairly well when passing and has opened what appears to be bigger lanes in the running game.
  • Our WR's have shown outstanding toughness. Every man is stepping up big time and making things easier for Peyton. Garcon has done things in the past two games that I never thought he could. He IS the next big Colts WR.
  • Our defensive line has returned to its pro-bowl pass rushing form (fingers crossed for Freeney).
  • Our run defense has improved to the point where we are still weak against the run, but we aren't allowing those long runs of a couple years ago and even last year.
  • Our linebacking corps I think is the best asset of our defense. We have Session, Brackett, and Hagler all starting. All have at least a season of starting experience under their belt. The depth behind them is astounding too because we have Wheeler (who was being groomed to start this season), Keiaho, a started from last year, and Senn who has showed promise. They all know how to play, and have shown that their play will be good going forward.
  • Our cornerbacks have done well when they needed to. They've been beat up this season so far, but Powers has been a decent starter especially for a rookie CB. I won't even mention Tim Jennings. Hayden has played well when able and Marlin Jackson is recovering well from his torn ACL.
  • Our safeties have been the most surprising unit of the team. With Sanders out I thought that our deep defense would be mediocre but Bethea has come into his own possibly forming the best safety tandem when Sanders is healthy. Bullit was clutch last year and looks like he will continue it this year.
  • Our special teams has finally reach league average. Thank God.
Poll
So now I pose the question. Are we the best team in the league? Are we one of the best? Or are we the same Colts who will make it to the playoffs and just fail?

My bust,

I meant to put Senn but Seward came to mind. About to change it.

I think the season is too young

to say that the Colts is the best team in the NFL, but it’s definitely one of the best in the league…so far.

Peyton Manning

I think at this point, it’s just a foregone conclusion that Manning will have over 30 touchdowns. There is also a very good chance that he could break the franchise records for Passing Yards and completion percentage. Now how many touchdown passes do you think he will have? Over/Under 40?

When I saw the post title,

I thought this was going to be one of those negative posts where you lay some “harsh truths” on us. I was pleasantly surprised.

Good work!

harsh "truths" posts aren't my favorite

because usually they are really ‘pessimistic opinions’

I thought the exact same thing!

As long as we’re winning. As fans, there’s nothing we can do about the negatives anyway. Even when the Colts lose or play ugly, I still love watching them play, and too much over-analyisis on the down side of our team is a waste of time.

You're right about Garcon

His 53 yard pass reception was a thing of beauty, but my favorite of the night was his run play where he stiff-armed Rodgers-Cromartie. He basically just took his left arm and threw the guy off of him and never broke stride. Anyone else like that one?

loved that

making his solid build (6 foot 209) work for him.

I can't remember the last time I saw something like that

in any game, much less a Colts player doing it. It was truly awesome.

I did!

I’ve seen MJD do the exact same thing. IF this kid keeps playing like that, he’s going to be in a LOT of highlight videos.

Stud...

his style reminds me of Hines Ward…tough and physica.

My roommate is a Vikings fan and mentioned that during the game

While I personally dont like Hines Ward at times, I thought it was a pretty cool comparison

Garcon playing with a chip on his shoulder….Where did he get that pile driver stiff arm? Carrying plates out to the table one handed?

Powers, a rookie who plays like a vet.

I miss Brackett, but I hope Keiaho plays out of his mind and quiets his critics.

I think its way too early

to know what this defense is, yet. I can’t say they are weak against the run. They had one average day against a superstar RB. They had one horrible game against a gimmick offense they have never played against before (practice and film study only goes so far) and they had one great game against a team that doesn’t run the ball well/a lot.

However, they have been without, at some point this year: Their starting safety, their starting MIKE, their starting DT, their starting CBs. Now, the earliest possible chance that the defense will be whole is whenever Freeney comes back. Impossible to tell what they could be.

Here’s what I will say, though: against Airzona, the starting corners were Powers and Jennings. Both of them, for reasons known only to God, decided to be more physical than we had seen from them (specifically Jennings). If they are going to beat WRs up and be successful, especially when its Jackson and Hayden on the outside, and you are going to have Freeney and Mathis coming off the edges, and you’re going to have Johnson&Johnson clogging up the middle, and you’re going to have The Erase stopping the run, I think this defense could easily be well above average in all areas, including run stopping.

Its a lot of wishful thinking, though, since I don’t think all 11 starters can be healthy at the same time :p

One thing I disagree with: "Our linebacking corps I think is the best asset of our defense."

The Colts have never put much money into LBers and instead focus on D-line, and more recently, corners and safeties. The LBer corps has always been our weak point and I believe that is why we are a horrible tackling team, because we don’t put money into it.

The Dline opens the holes in the line and usually the LBers makes the play. Unless they are not good tacklers. Now on the other hand I believe that we have a stronger LBer corps than in recent years, but they are still the weakest link on our team (save kickoff returns).
