Did anyone

Happen to catch the eye roll Peyton gave Sorgi just out of the half? Sorgi said something to him and Peyton looked away and appeared to roll his eyes. Had a good laugh even if he didn’t really roll his eyes at him.

by Nathan S. on Sep 3, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

I missed the second quarter

Who looked good? I heard Sorgi fumbled on the radio but I couldn’t tell if it was a bad snap or if he screwed it up. I’m guessing the defense was awful.

So far Grady has been a complete monster. I think Muir should be cut but I’m sure he will make the team over Foster.

On that last scoring driving by Cincy

one of our guys on the left side of the line was raising up, fumbling around, and getting set, and was completely not set when the ball was snapped. What a joke!

It's like the bizzaro world on Seinfeld

What a difference the world’s greatest qb makes……along with other starters. Let’s appreciate these years. God knows what’s going to happen when Peyton retires.

It's a Colts preseason game

There is something wrong if it isn’t a bloodbath by the last week.

shouldn't be this bad though

its not like our backups are going against their first-team

by Playoff Pride on Sep 3, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Their backups suck then

That’s why they are backups. Anyone who is a bit concerned about this needs to look back on the previous Colts preseasonr results and just relax.

its not concerning now

but it will be if one or more of our starters goes down during the season

by Playoff Pride on Sep 3, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

That's one out of 22

I’m not worried unless if all of the starters go AWOL or something. If they do I guess they get that offensive tackle out of Iowa (starts with a B). I’m sure Shake would be thrilled.

by Bullard47 on Sep 3, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know

Probably the stupid number allocations in the NFL. I prefer the college style of letting the players have whatever number they want. I like to see a linebacker with the number 5, a tight end with the number 9, a wide receiver with the number 23 and a cornerback with the number 12 like Notre Dame has it.

They may have a bunch of talented defensive tackles

But I would rather see Muir cut than one of the rookies. Grady has been amazing and it would be a crime to cut him right now. He has shown starter potential at some points.

Muir

started out so well in training camp but has shown nothing in games. I would lean towards starting Grady against Jax because he is for real. Taylor is getting better and shows flashes, that’s why they drafted him. Muir would be my odd man out unfortunately.

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

has Grady played against higher than 3rd stringers though

not that he hasn’t looked good, or that you can’t win a roster spot by dominating 3rd stringers but I haven’t seen him against real pro competition.

I’d rotate the hell out of the UT spot vs Jax Brock/Fili/Foster/Grady fresh bodies to make up for lack of size.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

Football Players...

Look like football players when they’re on the field. Keiaho faced third stringers and look like a pizza boy. Grady looked like an All Pro. He’s a football player boys. Get him on the field as often as possible.

He has good size but great speed and quickness….plus a mean streak which was lacking on the defense during the preseason.

I was surprised that Howard didn’t see the field much. Anyone know why?? It made the D look even worse that there was absolutely NO speed on the edges. Thomas should be cut, I have no use for him.

"Put him on the board. Houshmazilli....got it. CHAMPIONSHIP!"

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Thomas

Has been and still remains the best pure run defending DE on the roster. Whether we have room for that, without some value-added through DT versatility, I do not know.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

though with Brock and Dawson do you need a pure run defender

at DE, when you have the option of two guys who can actually get a little pass rush and have more experience at UT?

by shake n bake on Sep 3, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

That sir...

Is the question of the day. For me it is Thomas v. Dawson/Foster. Most likely, due to versatility, one of Dawson/Foster wins out.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure

but that brings me back to the LB debate because we haven’t seen the starters together enough to say whether run stopping ability on the DE spot is worth a roster spot over some other guy (DeVan, Lacey, Senn, Taj, etc).

Would you rather have Thomas over Dawson or Foster? I wouldn’t but I don’t remember what your opinion of those other two is.

"Put him on the board. Houshmazilli....got it. CHAMPIONSHIP!"

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I would keep Foster

But I think I’m in the minority. Foster v. Thomas… I’d probably keep Foster. He has more upside, by a long-shot than both of his competitors, more ability at DT, and focuses intently on ways to get after the QB. He’ll get there. Dawson isn’t there and I’m not sure if he will, given he’s had more time. Kind of, Dawson is “what you see is what you get.” Same with Thomas of course. I will break down my final roster prediction soon.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Foster

but I haven’t noticed him at DE ever so I can’t say whether I would like that or not.

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

then im in the minority too

Id prefer Foster over both Thomas and Dawson also

by Playoff Pride on Sep 3, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn't come out right

What I’m saying is, better LB play will make the bonus of Thomas against the run moot, and we can focus on other areas. IF our LBs struggle against the run like last year then Thomas is a good option.

But if Thomas is in the game we better blitz or else the other team will audible to a pass play and double team Freeney and convert the 1st down all the time.

"Put him on the board. Houshmazilli....got it. CHAMPIONSHIP!"

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Wheeler

Is not, and will not be, a run-stopping force, from what I’ve seen. That concerns me. Who behind them is a ru-stopping force? Maybe Senn? Tauiliili? Humber could be the back-up Mike/Will.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Very concerning

If Wheeler is not a run-stopping force, and also has questionable coverage skills….why is everyone so high on him?

I would rather “show blitz” with Bullitt than Wheeler because at least I know Melvin can drop back into coverage very well if they decide not to bring him. I would rather have a LB crew of Session, Brackett and Hagler who I am comfortable with in the run game than so many questions all over the place.

"Put him on the board. Houshmazilli....got it. CHAMPIONSHIP!"

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

This is what makes me question...

The early release of Seward. He was, by far, the best run-stopping option at LB on the team at LB, behind the starters. If I had a choice of between two guys who were liabilities in the passing game who had to start at SAM, I’d go with the guy who is a horse against the run, hits hard, and has experience leading a defense. Seward could have played at two positions and would have been a legitimate Mike back-up… albeit a big downgrade in pass coverage from Brackett. That said, no other LB on the team is a pass-coverage ace at LB so I’m not sure who we kept who would have had that asset mentioned in the rationale.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

I would much rather have a guy with a head on his shoulders that can tackle the ballcarrier over a quicker guy that can “fly” around the field but is unable to tackle or excel in pass coverage.

I also don’t understand why they released him so early?? There was obviously something going on there behind the scenes because Seward was the most fundamentally sound of the backups with skills to be a solid SAM if he wasn’t needed as backup MIKE.

Not enough to work with, but Mookie has proven himself against real teams during the regular season. Since Ed will be out week 1, I think Mookie at NT and Grady at UT would be a good starting DT line.

Can't argue with that.

Maybe one of those two will distinguish themselves?

Taylor

I wouldn’t risk trying to get him to the PS because he won’t make it. That and the awesome potential I personally see in Grady is why I would have to part with Muir.

I'm not a fan...

Of using two roster spots at one position for guys who have potential in the future. Moala is already in that mold and will need time to develop. Having only three legit options at DT, legit depth/rotation so to speak, when you can have four… because you use 2 of 53 spots for projects… not a good practice imo. Of course, we know Polian and his draft picks. But as a football fan, a Colts fan, and an amateur analyst… you keep your best players at each position right now. Taylor isn’t in my top 5.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I see what your saying

but at the same time Polian had kept Roy Hall on the roster for 2-3 years while he was injured. They should have put him on IR last year or parted ways before the season last year but were stubborn.

In an unrelated note…it seems old habits die hard because our ST is still very very bad. Return game and now the coverage game sub-par and I dont like it one bit.

by AceOfSpades on Sep 3, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Understand...

Preseason coverage units are misleading. First, anyone… I mean ANYONE who is sure-fire important to your team in the regular season will be used sparingly if at all on special teams. Second, that means that EVERYONE who is looking for some way to make the roster will be out there, including a handful of players who don’t have a shot in hell. hen the final roster break-down happens and the coverage units are filled with players who make the final cut, there will be a drastic improvement. How drastic? Hopefully, very noticeable.

Return game? It rests on T.J. Rushing or a waiver pick-up, it would seem.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Who would you start week 2

Ed deserves a spot. He is the best we have.

I would agree with the theory of taking those 4-5 guys and rotating them in and around and having Freeney on one end and Brock on the other end with Mathis in for passing situations and 3rd downs.

Until I see Grady give me a reason...

I would stick with Grady. If he starts week one and looks pedestrian against first team offensive linemen. Fine, go with experience. Until then though, I’m very very high on Grady.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Grady

there is no way he is only 290 (as listed on the front page). He looks bigger than almost all of the other guys and plays bigger too. I would guess him as 305 by looking at him.

I think he is a very good find by Polian

He's been incredible so far...

I am very excited about the kid. I don’t want to get too high, of course, until I see him against starters but I am confident that I know a football player when I see one. And when I think DT, I think of the things I see Grady show throuhgout the preseason, game in and out. Consistency has been mentioned as one of the key question-marks on this team defensively. He is a ray of light in that dept.

by bamock on Sep 3, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Out on a limb

I’ll go as far to say that what he did in the preseason, albeit against backups, reminded me of a young Warren Sapp but without the cockiness.

He is almost always shooting through the line, penetrating the backfield and around the ball at the end of the play. Very impressive.

last couple to escape the cuts for me

Taulilili, Ball, Sliva, Dawson, Foster, Rushing, Muir, Santi, Painter

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

Painter

he has all the tools to be a good QB. Sorgi doesn’t have the tools. I would take Painter over Sorgi. They are both below average QBs as it stands now, but Painter has the potential to get a lot better with more experience.

DID SOMEONE SAY CHAMPIONSHIP

by BROWNdude on Sep 3, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically

The Colts are masters of deception. If we all judged where this team would be at the end of the year based on how they look in the preseason, we would all guess 1-15.

All I can say

is after watching this abomination, our starters better stay healthy. I have zero confidence in the back-ups.

Backup positions that are way too bad – QB, OL, LB and CB.

In order by way of how bad our season would end up if backups were forced to play significant time…..

1. QB
2. LB
3. OL
4. CB

I would amend LB to MLB

I think putting Hagler in at OLB would go fine and even Senn is a passable WILL.

Senn

needs to work on tackling for about 2-3 years and then he can be an NFL player.

I am still fine with Hagler at SAM

I still think Hagler got the shaft last year

he was the 3rd best LB on the team last year and hardly got to play once he was back healthy.

Hagler

If I was coach, I would start him over Wheeler. Wheeler can blitz (allegedly) but can’t tackle and overpursues (like Keiaho and Tauiliili) but Hagler is a little more disciplined.

Wheeler vs Hagler

Both players have questionable coverage skills, but I feel that Hagler is the safer bet against the run and we are still struggling with it even though Polian has done a remarkable job finding DT talent.

Hagler looked really good against the run last year

and I remember him being strong against the run in 07.

It had to be the contract right? They assumed he wasn’t coming back next year so didn’t play him until Bustah was a comfirmed failure and they needed to win too much to fool around with prospects any more (playoffs).

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

thats bushleague

it should be more about winning and putting the best players on the field than worrying about future contracts.

Roster

I thought Taj Smith looked good tonight. I don’t know if they will keep more than 4 WRs, but he played well. I wish they would have given him more opportunities as a kick returner.

By the way, notice how much better the kickoff return game looks when the kick returner doesn’t stop all of his momentum at the 15 yard line and try something new?

I thought Tauiliili would bring it again tonight, but he showed his lack of experience and he played bad. Keiaho was a non-factor as he has been this whole preseason. Hagler is not getting any better. Senn signed his pink slip tonight. The LBs in general just don’t have it and I am nervous about the starting LBs having so little time together on the field so far.

Brackett should be solid and so will Session, but I am not sold on Wheeler yet….too many missed tackles so far.

My question is, who is going to be the backup MIKE and who is going to be the backup WILL?? I don’t see anything promising out of any of the available players. I think they might look to the waiver wire.
