By 6pm today, all NFL teams must trim their rosters down to 53 active players. At noon tomorrow, teams may begin making claims for waived players. Teams can also begin signing players to their practice squads.

For the Colts, they've already begun cutting down the roster, releasing Dante Hughes, Steve Justice, and Nick Graham. They need to make 19 more cuts to get to 53. This is your open thread for the Colts cuts and other teams roster moves. We could see some very interesting roster changes, like the Titans cutting Mitch King and Mark Jones.

Throughout the day, we'll update this frontpage story with news about Colts players cut.

[UPDATE]: And the first surprise cut today is Adrian Grady.

[UPDATE]: The Bills have cut former-Colts running back Dominic Rhodes. Also, PTF's douchebag-in-chief, via fellow douchebag extraordinaire Tom Curran, is saying the Colts have cut Marcus Howard. No confirmation yet.

[UPDATE]: The Eagles have cut ties with Dan Klecko.

[Shake UPDATE]: Marcus Howard, John Matthews and Walter Mendenhall have been cut.

Grady?

Apparently this year’s Colin Ferrell. Showed the most of any Colt DT during the preseason IMO. They must have someone on the waiver wire like King who intrigues them more. It couldn’t be Taylor or Muir.

Grady?

Hopefully they sign him to the PS

Grady

They must think they can get him to the PS because he was the most promising of the non-starters on the DL. I can’t remember if it was Colts Homer or bamock, but whoever said he was the best “football player” was dead on. He looks like he can be a really good player in this league. I had a feeling it would come down to him or Muir, but I liked Grady more. This looks good for Muir now. If they get Grady to the practice squad I would not be surprised at all if he is called up during the season.

Muir

I think the difference was between Grady and Foster. Both are UTs. Muir is a NT. I think Foster beat him out for a roster spot because they like Foster as a FB. But, we shall see.

Agree between the two...

I thought Foster had a chance to get cut due to Grady’s play, but it looks like (so far) I am wrong regarding Foster. Kind of disappointed regarding Grady, but in Polian and the Colts I trust. Besides possibly fullback, I still do not think Foster will have as big an impact as last year or will have as much an opportunity on line this year. But that just means the depth is way way better than last year.

David Tyree

He was cut by the Giants today. Tyree is an outstanding special teams player. Prior to his now famous catch in the SB, he was known as one of the best STers in football.

Is he a returner or a gunner?

by CooperManningsNotTrying on Sep 5, 2009 11:50 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

one of the best gunners ever...

But it’s kind of a luxury to carry someone specifically for that purpose.

In other news, Rhodes got cut by the Bills. What an inglorious end.

by willyduer on Sep 5, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nah

Hall was still a reserve WR that could’ve played in that capacity. He was there to earn his way into playing time there, not as a special teams only type with no hope of ever catching passes.

I suppose if they didn’t have Garcon or Collie and had a need for a serviceable 4th WR, then Tyree as a gunner would make sense.

I stunk.

I don;t go to Phil’s blog anymore. I asked some direct questions and he just ignored me. Maybe they were dumb questions, I don’t know. But Stampede Blue has more humor to it, and there’s a more diverse group here. Also a LOT more ladies, which is nice. People here are so willing to answer and be friendly. Plus, there’s a lot more information here. Also I think some, not all, sports writers think they’re better than the average fan. This is by the fans for the fans, which I love.

I like his blog because he has good access to some of the info that StampedeBlue doesn’t, but I agree with you about the quality of dialogue here vs. Phil B’s. I have also asked him some direct questions in the past and he always seems to ignore me too. I started coming over here for the same reasons you did.

there's a price for access.

BBS has talked about this. In exchange for access the Colts demand control. Access is dependent on you toeing the line they set in all your writing. I’m not sure what you two asked, but he might not be allowed to answer.

That's a good point, Hadn't thought of that.

But if I recall correctly my questions were about the actual game of football, not for opinions on the Colts themselves. What really turned me off about the Indy Star really wasn’t Phil’s fault, Kravitz made a comment one time in the paper about the “crazies” at the games, meaning adoring fans. And I remember thinking at the time, well if it wasn’t for the fanatics there would be no team, and not much need for a sports writer during football season.

Need I say more.

Change, there's that word again

Is the cutting of Howard a signal to more defensive change in the years to come or just a player that didn’t come as far as they had hoped? I thought he was fairly safe in making the roster. Where is the pass rush depth. I guess josh Thomas makes it again.

he brings ZERO pressure off the end. They are going to have to blitz more, especially if Freeney was injured.

Any chance they could now move him to DE? I know the SAM role isn’t as flashy as the WILL but he doesn’t look instinctive as a LB. Rushing the passer was supposed to be a strength of his.

I’m not sold on that. I see Brock, Dawson, Freeney, Mathis as DEs and Johnson, Johnson, Taylor, Muir and Foster as DTs. Who am I missing?

I just don’t think they will keep Thomas because he is so average. They could do better. At the same time, he is better against the run so this could be Coyers way of saying run defense is first and foremost and if we need help with the pressure we will bring Bullitt or Wheeler or everyone up the middle…

Volek

threw two screen passes and converted like one other 3rd down. I don’t think it would have made a difference.

That game was lost because Marvin’s fumble took the air out of the building and every time the Colts had a chance to break it open they failed (Kenton Keith)….1st and goal with about 4 mins to go in the game. The Colts beat themselves.

Coyer said we weren't going to blitz as much because we have pass rushers

well looks like that aiint happening. They got rid of all their pass rush depth from the end position behind freeney and mathis

Injuries

It is best to have solid backups, but until Freeney or Mathis is injured it will be a moot point. IF they do, we will have to find someone from the PS or on the market. It wouldn’t be the first time a team did that.

It won't be the first time

that it doesn’t work and we’re one-and-done in the playoffs.

Polian himself has said that if you don’t have pass-rushing DEs, you don’t have a prayer. Why he would work against his own philosophy is mystifying.

they have pass rushing DEs

they don’t have pure pass rushing backups

big difference. This year they actually have some bltizing ability

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

You're usually right shake

I’m PRAYING that you are, believe me. But the total lack of depth makes me worried. Really really really worried. DE depth was one of my ten reasons that the Colts would win the super bowl, and now all that depth has been cut for Josh effing Thomas.

and thomas

doesnt fit polians philosophy since he cant rush the QB at all

by metal_militia on Sep 5, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Players have nothing to do with “Polian’s philosophy”. He isn’t the defensive coordinator.

by KingRichard on Sep 5, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not so fast

Are we sure that Josh effing Thomas is going to make the team? I don’t believe it until I see it. I agree that a lack of depth at DE in regards to speed rushing ability is a little concerning, but stopping the run is one of, if not THE most crucial thing to getting this defense back up to the top in the league.

I can’t say it enough, with Coyer comes flexibility and different looks. We don’t know what we are going to see until the season starts. They might have Mathis as OLB in some situations for all we know.

Stopping the run is important

But not at the expense of what the D already does quite well, IE getting to the passer.

by slash196 on Sep 5, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

again we are talking about a backup

this isn’t an issue unless Freeney or Mathis get hurt, and Brock isn’t a bad DE either. 2007 was a perfect storm of injuries. Freeney, Mathis and Brock.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 5, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's not bad

But he’s not that great either. He’s a strong utility guy, can swap positions and the like. But as a pure DE he’s a weakness.

All I can say is they must be head-over-heels in LOVE with Dawson at DE to make this move.

by slash196 on Sep 5, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right

unlike in years past, where Meeks struggled to come up with a plan to bring pressure, we have Coyer, who is an innovator when it comes to bringing pressure and making offenses guess on every play. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions just because they released a single one-dimensional player.

You could make that argument. It would also be moronic to cut him. Only difference is Howard hasn’t made any Pro-Bowls…yet.

Mathis Freeney

Dawson Howard…that’s four roster spots for the four best DEs (counting Brock at DT). No need to keep them ALL, CuJo was just an odd man out but Howard is a frakkin gamer. It’s a mistake to cut him; that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I liked Howard too

I’m just saying that I trust them. If Howard is eligible for the practice squad they will get him to the practice squad. Howard doesn’t fit with any other team’s defense in the NFL. He is too small and hasn’t proven himself to be good enough to make up for it.

your right i am exaggerating a bit

but I just dont want to see another performance like in 2007 when Freeney went down. Even when Mathis was healthy the defense still wasn’t able to generate pressure. will they be able too by blitzing? yes, but if the sam senerio where mathis and freeney went down occurs, then the Cotls will have no choice but to blitz on every down. Im not saying its going to happen (god I hope it doesn’t) but injuries can happen on any given play. If i learned anything, depth is very important and no depth can spell doom.

Preseason

they weren’t even trying. Watch the Philly game again, when the starters were playing in the first quarter. Philly had trouble with it. That is what I expect from them all year. It’s totally different when the starters are in the game. The starters are probably 10 times better and that is a conservative estimate.

Howard is not eligible for PS

a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club’s 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) If the player was on the active list for fewer that 9 games during their “only Accrued Season(s)”, they maintain their eligibility for the practice squad

The point is

the defense looked and played a ton better when the starters were in the game, which was the Philly game and no other game so far that we have seen. If Giordano wasn’t in there and getting burned by that deep ball that any other competent safety would have been able to defend from the backside, they would have held them to 3 or maybe 0 points.

EVERYONE CHILL THE %#@% OUT!

Dear god. One guy gets cut and now the freakin world is ending? Let’s all take a deep breath and just think about the situation before we react and nearly give ourselves a heart attack.

Cutting Howard has nothing to do with Polian or his “philosophy.” This is Coyer’s defense now and the types of players he likes and whom he thinks fit best in his defense aren’t people like Marcus Howard. That’s just the reality of the situation and you’re just going to have to come to grips with this.

The reason I like this move and his willingness to beef up this defense is because it’s time for a change. We’ve run the Dungy defense for long enough, and Dungy is gone. You guys were all excited when Coyer first came and now all of the sudden when he starts making moves to shape it how he wants you are flipping your lids, I don’t get it.

The defensive line is getting a much needed boost in terms of size but at the same time it is NOT losing the athleticism. Keyunta Dawson isn’t some slow fat guy, he’s still super athletic. The only difference between him and Howard is that he’s bigger, that’s it. This means some 6’10 300+ lb lineman won’t be able to just smash him into the ground as easily. I like this transition. Actually, I love it.

Here's my problem

I haven’t seen a single thing from Key that implies that he’s got the quickness to get around the corner and to the QB OR that he’s got stoutness in run support. Big for big’s sake is not a strength. I desperately want Dawson to make me eat my words, so we’ll just have to see. As I said up there, they must be absolutely in love with him to make this move.

by slash196 on Sep 5, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's not what they are counting on him for

Mathis and Freeney will be in the game when they want guys to rush the QB. Key and Brock will be in the game when they want someone to stand in to help against the rush.

will be in there on run downs too. If they need pressure, Coyer will get pressure. I’m not nearly as worried as you are about it.

Lets talk about the running game….I wish the Colts had more of a commitment to the run game instead of dropping back so much. Play action is what built this offense. Bring it back!

The last couple of drafts Polian has been missing on and missing by quite a wide margin. Never seen drafts were so few players are still on the time after only a few years.

Its certainly not around .300

Of that draft class only Gonzo, Ugoh and Dawson are left.

Read my post

Read my post above yours. I consider “hitting” in draft to be drafting a player that becomes a starter. In the 2007 class we only got one with Gonzo. The rest are either gone or are scrubs.

by MasterRWayne on Sep 5, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There are only 22 starters on a team

And there are at least eight picks a year, every year. And the more starters you pick, the fewer open slots you have for other picks to become starters. By that metric, a successful drafter would begin to have poor drafts merely by definition.

Howard

Just me speculating: Marcus’ one ability was to rush the passer. In pre-season, he was pretty bad holding up against the run. In the past, Dungy was more interested in players who were a little under-sized but compensated with speed. Clearly, Caldwell does not share that philosophy. He seems to like players who are better against the run.

Also folks, please note, the DEs currently are Freeney, Mathis, Brock, and Dawson. The defense this year is designed to generate more pressure using blitzes. This takes the pass rushing strain off Freeney and Mathis, which likely contributed to them BOTH getting hurt in 2007.

Last year (I was watching for the final cuts closely),

the roster page was updated just after 8:00 Saturday night, and then the news organizations reported it (Indystar gets a release at the same time the page is updated). Also, the Colts don’t necessarily have to release who was cut until Sunday at the latest.

Marcus Howard

I think this reflects the defense philosophy. For years, the team would appear to not be interested in large DTs, now we’ve got several. The defense has been too reliant on Freeney. Dwight isn’t going to play forever, so the coaches either need to (a) drafts another Dwight Freeney, or (b) learn to play defense differently. Some of us thought Marcus Howard would be the next great DE, but I guess he wasn’t. In summary, I don’t care who makes the team as long as we can stop the run and get off the field after third downs.

" . . . . .get off the field after third downs."

Yeah . . .and frig the damn bend but don’t break defensive philosophy. I much prefer the get in your face variety, that has the quality of players to turn loose on the opposition and get Peyton the damn ball three or four more times a game. And we do have those players.
If one examines our offensive philosophy, the word that best characterizes it is ‘aggressive’. Peyton and Tom Moore are always attacking defenses.
It’s about time our defense matched that attitude with it’s own aggressive streak. I think our stable of DB’s is good enough to handle covering for the use of blitzes more often than in the past.

That aggression can lead to some big passing lanes. Teams dont need to run to convert in third down. I just hope when they blitz, they do it on short distances rather than thrid and long

But I figure it has to make sense somewhere. I really hate to be morbid here

Honestly, I do. But my strong opinion is that the Raiders will not be good again until Al Davis dies. And this is coming from a former Raiders fan during the glory years (mid-70s to early-80s, before the Colts came to Indy when I had no local team to root for). Back in the day Al Davis took risks on talented players who had character issues but were proven NFL players. These days I think he’s just hurling random shit at the wall, forgetting that talent doesn’t always translate into production.

Several return men available

Justin Miller, KR, waived from Raiders, returned 2 TDs during kickoffs last year. I remember him returning one for the Jets as well against us in our SB year (2006 season)

Yamon Figurs, KR, tore up the combine, excellent speed, he was waived from the Ravens.

These are 2 guys I really feel can help us. We will see.

Taylor and Hart are PS eligible

If they clear waivers, Taylor and Hart are PS eligible. I do not think that is the case with Marcus Howard. Marcus Howard would make a good pass rushing OLB, just like Curtis Johnson, in a 3-4. I expect a 3-4 team to pick him up.

I wonder why we picked up so many tweeners that were Mathis clones in Howard and CuJo, I guess now we have officially begun the process of bulking up.

I can see Mitch King playing for us (hoping he does:-)).

lance ball

it was painfully obviouslance ball didnt have that extra gear to make the stretch work. i know he ran hard but he had nuthing. i suspect polian is looking for something else. i would be surprised to see simpson on the roster past the first week. If a lamebrain like me can see him hesitating and just not accelerating on the kick off then surely the pros can see it.

the offensive line

I believe if the line does not give addai and brown some room to run, there will be drastic changes(duh!!!!) My question then is this what do you do if all the guys you kept arent blocking as a unit, arent protecting manning as they should and definately should be opening holes for our RBs, what then? is this tweakable? is it something where they will grow as the season goes on? will the practice squad offer an answer? will ted leave jane and then opt for brain surgery…oops sorry i was going off the deep end..lol quick talk me off the ledge!!! lol i want a super bowl!!!!! lol
