Brandon Marshall to the Colts

Everyone is talking bad about Brandon Marshall.  Do we not remember Randy Moss in Oakland.  Get with a winning program and things look a lot better.  Brandon Marshall is only 25.  He is well worth a 1st round pick.  Reggie Wayne and Brandon Marshall on the outside, and Gonzelez in the slot.  Watch out New England and Tom Brady.  Mr. Polian GO GET BRANDON MARSHALL.  He will be so happy to play with Manning.  Who is going to stop Indy now?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Risk/Reward

I will agree with you that Marshall would certainly boost us to the top 1 or 2 in the Power Rankings, but he’s no Randy Moss. Would I like to see a guy like Marshall lining up across from Reggie? Absolutely. Do I think he’d be very successful in our system? Yes. Do I think the experiment would work like Moss in New England? Not at all.

Reason? Well, Randy Moss was an outstanding teammate prior to his time in Oakland, and an outstanding teammate afterwards. Marshall had problems off the field even with Cutler at the helm and if there’s anything Indy sports fans hate from their atheletes, it’s problems off the field. Plus, as proven time and time again, BP goes for home-grown talent and rarely (if ever) goes after a big name free agent.

by EddieDean on Sep 9, 2009 1:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He deserves a shot

If I do remember Mr. Moss told the world he smoked weed. I do agree he had some off the field problems. However, ALL CHARGES were dropped. So that’s not fair for you to say that. He was not charged at all. We all know that women are crazy sometimes. He did not shoot anyone or drink and drive. So to say he is a problem off the field is not all true. Plus, winning brings a more positive outlook on life. And Indy’s has a lot of character players that will help him mature. This has been successful in the sports world. Micheal Jordan/Dennis Rodman. It worked and won championships. Don’t always read all the tabloids. This guy wants to win and be respected. Everyone is always upset about how much these players make and they should play regardless. The owner make way more. And in the NFL contracts are not guaranteed. The guy deserve a shot.

by Indy Lori on Sep 9, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're misinterpreting me...

I didn’t say I would necessarily have a problem with it, but it’s not a fit for our team. Dungy may be gone, but Irsay and Polian still have a jones for “character-guys” and don’t appear to be as forgiving as say a Robert Kraft or Jerry Jones might be. Same with the majority of Colts fans. You are also forgetting the incident in which Marshall busted his hand by putting it through a television set which he blamed on an errant McDonald’s wrapper.

I think I’m being perfectly fair in my assessment of both Mr. Marshall’s on the field talent and off-field issues. Nobody’s perfect, I agree, and like you said, even Randy Moss admitted to smoking weed. But we lost our best Defensive Tackle for the 2008 season for possessing weed so what makes you think we wouldn’t kick a guy like Marshall off the team for something stupid like that as well? I’m just saying the reward is not worth the risk.

Totally respect that

Good points! I just dont like people who talk irrational about specific players and they dont know all the facts. But again, I think that the vets would certainley help a young talented player like Mr. Marshall.

I agree

He is on a team that is self destructing. No one is mad at Jay Cutler for demanding a trade. No one is mad a Eli Manning when he refused to go the Chargers. I agree he made some mistakes he is only 25. Do you remember when you where 25? Again, the Colt’s organization is stable. Remember Randy in Oakland. I think Brandon would have a huge impact for the Colts. Becuz we have Peyton. No dbl coverage on Wayne. More running lanes for the RB’s and both WR are big and physical so short passes become big gains. Which kills the blitz. Understand I have played football all my life. Former U of M player and San Diego St. I learned from some pretty impressive coaches. So again this guy is the real deal. To answer the question about Plex. Gun law may be strict. What about killing someone? that has to be worse.

i want no part of a guy who bats down balls at practice, refuses to run, etc. due to a contract dispute. you played football, you say. how would you have felt if a teammate behaved this way.

he’s behaving like a brat because he’s vastly underpaid right now. the colts are not going to waste a 1st round pick, plus #1 receiver money on a guy with these kinds of on-the-field as well as off-the-field problems.

if they colts really wanted to trade for an unhappy receiver they’d go for boldin, who’s a great citizen, who doesn’t let contract disputes affect his play, and who is a better all-around player than marshall. (they won’t do this either, of course. nor should they. the colts already have good receivers, and that 1st round pick could be used on another position of need.)

marshall is an absolute train-wreck. no way we come anywhere near him.

winning gives you a discount

We can sign him becuz he wants a shot at a superbowl. Plus again, we have the best QB in the league. So we use him for a year. And then we could franchise him or let him go. But he is only making 2.2 million right now. All denver wants in 1st rd pick

all they want is a first round pick?

for a guy who is one bad choice from being suspended half a season, refused to make an effort in practice and got most of his production from being force feed an insane number of targets (rather than being particularly efficient).

If you want to compare it to the Moss deal. Moss cost a 4th round pick and had done much more as a receiver in the past.

Actually, I like Moreno myself. Of course I don’t care to discard guys over injury too quickly.

by coltsfanawalt on Sep 9, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some of my thoughts.

No comparison here with Moss. I think that Moss could rival Rice for the greatest to have ever played the position. Take away his years at Oakland and a couple injury layoffs, plus have him play as long (old) as Rice did, and I think he’d have taken the stats in time. Also, Rice had Montana and Young throwing to him nearly his entire career, wher Moss had no one special until Brady. Moss is so special that he makes his QB look much better than reality.

Marshall, on the other hand, benefited from Cutler. Cutler will make Bennett a better pro receiver in Chicago than Marshall was looking like in Denver. I don’t blame Marshall for wanting out. He has Orton throwing to him now. He msses Cutler’s rocket and accuracy.

by coltsfanawalt on Sep 9, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't forget he made Culpepper look like a stud, too

I believe that Moss made Brady an elite QB. Welker made him a really good one, but Moss took Brady to Peyton’s level.

Do I believe in aliens?" Stephon Marbury asked. "I don't know, because I've never seen one. But I believe in Jesus because I saw him in the shower the other day."

This is for the Haters

Mr Marshall is now a locker room cancer. You are certainly a hater. And have never played any organized football in your life. Stop watching TMZ and know the facts. People said the same thing about Ray Lewis, Randy Moss, Steve Smith. and they are all pro-bowlers. Stop hated player. It’s obvious you are perfect. And Moss did have a great QB in Minnesota. Dante has a strong arm that benefited Moss. But again Moss and Rice two different types of receivers. Rice went over the middle Randy does not. Rice ran reverses, randy does not. So he is not Rice and Rice is not randy. Randy still has work to do. But, he is a beast. Don’t hate the player. Hate the game.

Marshall attitude has to do with an unstable organization

Marshall never had any problems with other team member. Randy moss admitted to the world on tv that he smokes marijuana. that was real stupid. Not to mention that he initially signed with Florida St. out of H.S. but the weed got him in trouble there. To the fan who said Marshall is nothin without cutler, was randy anything in Oakland. I’m not related to Marshall, but I have been around numerous guys in the league. Az Hakim that used to play for the Rams was my roomate in college. So I have been around a lot of receivers. I have seen Brandon Marshall in person. The guy is a hell of an athlete. And he is a good guy. People just read all the tabloids and make there own assumptions. But, you don’t really know them as a person. Plus I never said he was Randy Moss. I just said that people wrote Randy off in Oakland and I was happy to see that he proved all the haters wrong. Just like everyone is hating on Brandon Marshall. Hell, randy was traded for a 4th round pick. Cheers to the Pats.

In sports the media are sharks. They bring up everything. So yes the media would bring up his fighting. And Steve Smith does have a temper. But he is very passionate about the game of football. So yeah it would be brought up. To Mr Payne I said the if you make a personal comment about a player you dont know. Then yes you are a hater. I simply said that randy moss was labled a bad seed a few years ago. And you see what happened. All I said is that he would be a different player with the colts. Why did Rodman and Jordan work? And you cant say the rodman was not a screwed up individual. And I’m only saying that becuz he did not try to hide it. But when you have veterans on your team. They will show him the right way. I don’t expect for you or anyone else to understand. I know from experience. And I’m sure the colts know to. Ask Ed Johnson.

Plaxico, Brandon Marshall, and I could go on and on, abuse that great privelage
I think about the guys thta would give there right nut just to make a 53 man roster,
and earn just a .10 of what these guys make.

Same here

What you have to understand that most of these player come from the hood. And there upbringing is a lot different that most people are a custom too. Many of them don’t have fathers to teach them. So its tuff. That’s why I love Tony D so much. Cuz he stresses the family. Many of these young men dont knw how to handle being a professional. So people on the outside might not understand why they carry guns. Or why they hang out in crime infested areas. Becuz they know no different. I do respect everyone. But I am telling you. All Mr. Marshall wants is for someone to care. And give him what he is worth. He just does not know how to do it correctly.

I’d give the Broncos a 3rd for Marshall. Mainly because Polian whiffs on those every year.

Normally I wouldn’t be in favor of taking a diva like Marshall, but he’s got undeniable talent, and I can’t imagine him acting up when he’s got Manning throwing him passes. Moreover, I can see him being brought in by Polian & Co. and told “You’re on an exceptionally short leash. Screw around, and no one will touch you, because if you can’t win here you can’t win anywhere. Do things our way, and we’re talking Super Bowl. Up to you, kid.”

Quote from The 2009 All Head Case Team:

WR – Brandon Marshall – Denver Broncos – Labeled "Baby TO" coming out of Central Florida, Marshall has been nothing if not a formidable head case. Marshall keeps getting arrested and the charges keep getting dropped. Many of the issues are domestically related. Maybe Marshall simply needs to find a girlfriend that he doesn’t have the urge to smack. The latest incidents involving Marshall have all been football related.

Yep. I say we go get him right now.

if it were true, then why was the charges dropped. Plus you dont knw how he was raised. You don’t know if he had a father figure. You don’t know anything about him. HATER!

Umm, okay.

So if we have concerns about someone’s character, we are haters??? We don’t know if he had a father figure growing up, you’re right, but does that mean that we should make a bad move for our team (assuming that’s how Polian and company see it, as does most everyone else but you), just out of pity for his early life? Try church for that, or something.

By the way, there have been plenty of people who grew up in rough situations who overcame it and functioned in society with tremendous success. Please drop that one now. You are being the hater now.

Tabloid QUEEN,

thankyouverymuch.

BTW, alot of people have had difficult childhoods…whether it be abuse (physical and/or emtional) or the lack of one parent or another…or both. That does NOT give them a free pass to do whatever they please as an adult. There comes a time in a person’s life where they have to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for THEIR actions. It’s called BEING AN ADULT.

Grow up.

Lost Cause

Dont worry my guy. You dont know anything about the hood. I simply saying that you would not understand. I dont expect you to understand. Just go to the Southside of Indy sometimes. Then you will see.

That's disgusting

Some of us made it out of the hood just fine thank you. The Hood is a mental state that people CHOOSE to hold on to. So you can get out of here with that BS.

I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

by Bullard47 on Sep 9, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What hood would that be on the South Side?

Moss Creek? Holly Hills?

I lived in Garfield Park/Fountain Square for a few years, which is about as close to “hood” as the south side gets, and the worst thing that happened to us while we were living there was we had the freon huffed out of our air conditioner by some crack head…okay, that sounded bad. Really, the south side is great. Indy is great all together, but it does have it’s ghetto side. I teach at-risk kids for a living here in Indy and I know what their home situations are like. I came from a job where I worked with the same type of kids from bigger cities with worse crime and by and large, the problems are all the same, regardless of how “hood” you are, or where you come from.

No money+no dad=fewer chance of graduating high school and being successful.

So, despite our disagreement about where the Indianapolis ghetto is located, I’ll agree with you that Marshall’s behavior is not 100% his fault. That said, I DON’T want him on the Colts. Whether it’s due to his poor upbringing or not, he’s damaged goods and I don’t want my favorite football team risking time, draft picks and money on him. Sorry, it’s just too big of a gamble given what he’s shown us (very little…he’s had one more good year in his career than Tampa Bay’s legendary bust, Michael Clayton). Ask me again next year when he’s a free agent who’s hopefully ruined his value by whining and disappearing because of a bad coach and a worse QB.

and i am pleased to call the “southside” my neighborhood today.

you have taken a friendly football debate to insulting women, calling the neighborhoods people live in a bad side of town, calling people haters, or saying someone doesnt have the life experience to have a valid opinion of what you are talking about . please before you post something read it and evaluate whethor or not it relates to football, or can even be counted as a friendly debate.

i feel sorry that you have to use a demeaning statement to get what you are saying across to someone.

hopefully on your next post, you wont be personally offended if someone doesnt side with your point of view. ive been visiting this site much longer than ive been a member. for the most part no one attacks anyone else or gets upset if their points of view differ.

A. Brandon Marshall
B. Chad Ocho Cinco

Sidenote: Polian and Manning both have to be retired for this to take place.

I would go with Chad because at least he can make me laugh sometimes.

Marshal

If the Colts Trade for Marshal what makes you think his ego wont flare up when he has to share the ball with Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark. Ill say this, he wont be the number one, number two, or hell maybe not even number three receiver on this team.

Add him

Who cares about all this off field stuff with him. He is unhappy being in Denver. Whoever he goes to, he will be out to prove himself and will want to make Denver look foolish for not being able to work with him. The Colts would move up and down the field with him. Could you imagine Brandon Marshall, Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez, Dallas Clark, Joseph Addai and Peyton Manning. Who would stop them?? No one is the answer!

Chemistry

You and jcitiesfinest21 fail to understand the importance of chemistry to the success of the team. It’s the old saying “a champion team, will always beat a team of champions” (see Giants Vs. Pats superbowl). Sure Marshall could come in and help Manning light up the score boards, but based on his history he is more likely to come in and disrupt the locker room. The risk/reward is just too high.

This would have to be one of my top five sporting highlights of all time.

by AussieColtsFan on Sep 10, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just from a football standpoint I don't think it's worth giving up much of anything for him

thanks to the LT situation we should see a heavy dose of Gijon Robinson (or if we’re lucky Tom Santi) leaving 4 spots left. One is Addai/Brown, leaving 3 spots for Clark, Wayne and Gonzo.

So basically bringing in another receiver would take Gonzo off the field. So they’d really be giving up a high pick for the difference between Marshall and Gonzo (and a small bit of Gonzo over Collie).

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 9, 2009 4:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good thought.

Now here’s my question. Putting attitude problems and such aside, do you think he is any improvement over Gonzo? Because I don’t. Gonzo was drafted higher, and we are about to experience his first full season as an outside receiver. I’m excited about it.

Add the personality problems, which date back before the pros, and this would be an insane investment.

But Gonzo is better straight up. What do you think, though, shake?

by coltsfanawalt on Sep 9, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hard to tell. Gonzo was may more effiecent, Marshall more productive

you’d need to know at what rate returns diminish for targets at WRs.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 9, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotcha.

by coltsfanawalt on Sep 9, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My man

Winning is the key to happiness in professional sports. Marshall is much more dominant than Gonzo. He is bigger and faster. Gonzo is smaller, yet he is fast and has precision routes. So he will probably get pressed a lot. Now teams are starting to blitz peyton more and roll the coverage to wayne. Leaving Gonzo one on one. Marshall is much bigger and much more of a deep threat. Gonzo will be wes welker. which they would have to bring in a nickle back. cuz a saftey will get smoked by gonzo and his great route running. Which open up huge running lanes. Not to mention Dallas is killing them. This 3 WR and a TE and one back package will be unstoppable. Have you forgoten the year with stokley and harrison. Welcome Back the colts off and running.

by jcitiesfinest21 on Sep 9, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm curious

also on how well Marshall runs routes. Gonzo is a master at that. As Wayne has shown us, it’s not all about flat speed when it comes to getting open. Otherwise David Clowney would be the greatest recaiver ever, and the Raiders would be the best at the draft.

I still think Cutler helped Marshall a lot. Manning would too, but he will spread it around and frustrate a player like TO, Chad 85, or Marshall. IMO.

these players you are talking about are on a losing team. players make sacrifices to win. Super Bowl is the number one goal. Thats what get you a big contract. The super bowl

by jcitiesfinest21 on Sep 9, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know,

teams take the deep ball from us more than before. They know what Peyton can do. They’d rather die the slow death. Also, our defense is far better than Denver’s last year at points allowed, so Manning does not need to shoot it out. Just dinkin and dunkin is fine. I think this would frustrate Marshall.

Listen, if the Colts get Marshall, I will come say I was crazy to doubt it and would embrace the change, then send you a gameday pizza. Whatever Polian thinks will help the team win is good by me. I’ve always tried to put that above my ego and desire to be justified.

by coltsfanawalt on Sep 9, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

two deep safties

with wayne and marshall you have to play 2 safties dp. That’s what happen when Harrison was there in his prime with wayne. Which is why edge was so productive. Then the play action is in full effect. Teams are not dbling Gonzo. This is his year to show he is a 1st rd pick. He need to get 1000 yrds cuz wayne will be dbld. I just hope we get the running game going. I wish we would hv added another great WR we had chances at boldin, ocho cincho, or marshall. Peyton is used to having two prolific WR. Well, its been a great debate. I dont care what happens aslong as we go to the big show the super bowl

Gonzo is more of an outside WR than inside

Says who?

Not NFL GMs. Gonzo was snagged first round, Marshall was passed over until the fourth. He looked great when Cutler was throwing to him as his #1 target. Eddie Royal looked that good when Marshall was suspended, remember?

It’s like Cutler said when he got to Chicago. Earl Bennett (drafted much higher than Marshall) was unimpressive in Chi town last year because the ball wasn’t getting delivered well. But Cutler knew from their mutual time in college that Bennett was very good. Cutler is promising big stats for Bennett this year. I believe him. Problem is, Bennett’s QB from last year is now throwing to Marshall. No wonder he wants out!

What I liked about all the comments above wasn’t the topic, but how everyone’s personalities kinda jump out at you during a heated debate. Brandon Marshall

Is an outstanding talent, one of the top five receivers in the league, a stand up gentleman and true professional.

Two of those statements are true.

He should not be anywhere near the Indianapolis Colts.

One of those statements is true.

by eltharion_doa on Sep 9, 2009 9:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He'd be a nice addition but the cost would be too high

I think most everybody agrees that he has talent, but your not going to be able to bring a guy like that in and stay under the salary cap most likely. The Colts had to juggle the numbers around just so they could keep Jeff Saturday, which they definitely need to keep. And I’d really hate to see the Colts trade away a first round draft pick or possibly more for him. I’m really interested to see how Austin Collie will do. I think Collie has a lot of potential, more than most give him credit for.

I just don’t see Irsay allowing any more money spent on expensive players that are not drafted. Remember the Cory Simon problem. He cost the team plenty of cap money after leaving the Colts for unspecified reasons.
