Shonn Greene vs. Donald Brown
Interesting thought about last year's draft - deciding between these two RB's was a legitimate decision for the Colts brass to make. We got Brown at the end of the first and Greene lasted about a round longer. And because of injuries, it's hard to really compare them this year.
The only reason I bring this up is because apparently we were pretty close to getting Greene. In Simmons' latest podcast, Mike Lombardi said that he had talked to Polian about this and it was actually a very close decision. He claims that Polian loved Greene and strongly considered him but ultimately felt that Brown fit our offense better.
Obviously it's way too early to know if it was the right decision, but it's certainly an interesting what-if decision.

according to Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post
and former Oakland Raiders GM, etc… He spoke with Bill Polian over the summer and Bill said he was agonized over the choice of Brown or Greene – in the first round. That it was close, but in the end they felt Brown was better for the Colts system. Same thing happened in the Addai draft with MJD. Maybe he should start going against his gut.
Never doubt Peyton Manning, he’ll make you look silly
Joseph Addai is a good running back.

Hello, Ladies!
I disagree.
I don’t remember who it was, nor in which article, but there was a personnel man talking about the running back class of the last draft who thought that Brown would, in time, end up being the best runner in the draft. I agree with that assessment—if Brown can stay healthy. He’s a rare guy who seemingly can’t be brought down by fewer than three people once his motor’s running.
The argument of Addai v. MJD is a good one, though. I personally think Addai is a better choice for us because of the other elements of our offense. He’s a better pass-blocker, for one. I’m not sure MJD would fare very much better behind our line than any other downhill runner, and I think he’s only a bit better than Addai in the red zone (particularly on the goal line). That said, I’m a huge fan of MJD.
Honestly, I think the talent of our RB’s is as good as any in the league. Get some holes open for them, and they’ll prove it.
You've said exactly what I've been thinking this whole time
And yeah, Brown is a rough diamond: he has to be lapidated first, so he’ll his job done. While Addai is mostly an elusive back, who identifies the spaces made by the OL (which became very rare late this years) and will try to avoid the tackles, Brown seems to have a MJD style, who of course will have to be helped by the OL, but will break tackles and not avoid them like Addai. I just hope Polian manages to draft some good OL in this draft, who are able to protect Manning as well as open holes to our RBs. With something like this, our attack will be a powerhouse just like the Saints

Greene lasted until the 3rd round. If the Colts had picked a single spot higher in 05, we could have had Addai, MJD, Brown, and Greene. How sick would that have been?
We rise. They fall.

A pure powerhouse
in both running and passing, but it’s too late to talk and consequently dream about it.
Quitters never win, but cheaters sometimes do
Regardless of RB
we would be doing a whole lot better in the running game, IMHO, if the focus had been on run-blocking linemen
How can you not love a team that does this?
THIS! ^
Addai, Brown, Hart, Simpson… they all would look good (at least better) behind a line designed for the run. Then again, would Peyton look as good? Not convinced he would, and that’s a risk i wouldn’t be willing to take.
it is actually possible to find OL
that can run and pass block… if you get them before the 5th round.

Hello, Ladies!
I agree
You have to remember that Greene is running behind a group of first round linemen. Here is the overall draft selection of the Jets line: Ferguson (4), Faneca (26), Mangold (29), Moore (UFA), Woody (17). Here is the Colts line: Johnson (199), Lilja (UFA), Saturday (UFA), DeVan (UFA), Diem (118).
Obviously draft position isn’t everything, but there is a definite difference in the talent of the offensive lines.
And how many sacks did that first rounder linemen give up?
Sure, paving the road for runners is great. But protecting Peyton is FAAAAAAARRR more important than anything else, period.

^ This
is the bottom line of any argument about our offensive line. Pass blocking is paramount; we use high draft picks on skill players so Peyton has weapons, and low draft picks on linemen so Peyton stays clean. It’s a delicate balance when you’re constantly drafting toward the ends of rounds.
Biggest difference here
is the oline… I’m betting Donald Brown would look brilliant behind the behemoths on the Jets O-line. Ours just isn’t built for run blocking, especially in the past few years.
I really like what I’ve seen from brown. When the O-line gives him a tiny crease to work with, he’s usually through for a big gain. Addai still thinks about them, and gets tied up.
Addai thinks and keeps the ball with him
He’s not making big plays like in his rookie year, but like many others have already said, our OL is designed to protected Manning, not opening holes for the RBs. Maybe during this year training camp, the OL may have some changes and protected the pass as well as open holes for our mighty RBs. Come on, Addai, Brown, Hart, Simpson, all of them have potential. They just need time and mainly SPACE to show it.
Quitters never win, but cheaters sometimes do
Hey, not baggin' on joe!
I love addai! I’m just saying, he seems almost too tentative with the ball sometimes. I mean, sometimes it pays off (the Ray Lewis juke was a thing of beauty), but more often then not, he just gets stopped or gets a tiny gain. I’m just saying, Brown just seems to be more explosive with the same holes Addai has. Look at his one 8-10 yarder against the ravens. Didn’t look like much was there, but he exploited it anyway.
My point remains: Greene looks as good as he does because of the Jet’s O-line. He’s still a talented runner, obviously. If we drafted Greene instead, we’d be like “oh dammit! we coulda had Brown!”
As far as Hart, he’s one of the guys on the Colts who I’m always worried is going to cut. He has so much potential and (pardon the pun) heart. You can tell he’s working his ass off whenever he gets the ball, and really wants that place on the roster. I liked the bashing he did this past weekend.
Maybe he'll eventually get his desired place on the roster
But it won’t happen until we get some better, fresh and yound lineman. Polian won’t use top picks to draft linemans. By the way, Mathis’ contract will expire next year. I thought the Colts might use a non-exclusive franchise tag on him, so if anyone makes a offer for him, we’ll get two first-round draft picks. It’d be something awesome but on other side, having Mathis on the opposite DL would be something scary as hell
Quitters never win, but cheaters sometimes do
This only adds to the karmah.
Greene: 30 carries 150+ yards 2 TDs
Lets look at S Greene in Week 16. Colts didn't play against him last week
S Greene – 67 yds in 3 quarters against 1/3 backups on Colts D
4th quarter – 28 yds against 1/2+ backups
Jets – 90 yds in 3 quarters against 1/3 backups on Colts D
111 yds in 4th quarter against 1/2 backups
4 D starters out from the beginning of the game, more out by the 4th quarter.
Seems like it might have been close if you played your starters.
Maybe it will be closer on Sunday.
Yeah...
It’s funny you clowns actually think you were in that game. Are you seriously this stupid to not realize how outmatched you are in nearly every aspect of the game?
Keep livin a fairy tale, Jets fan, we’ll think of you when we’re in Miami.
"A lot of times, Kenny, we have no idea what we're doing. But the DEFENSE doesn't know that we don't know what we're doing.....and that's next level." -Peyton Manning
Admittedly outmatched at QB.
Jets are either as good or better at every other offensive position. Its tough to judge receivers bc of our bad QB play. And Colt receivers’ stats are inflated bc of Manning. Jet defensive players are light years better than the Colts’ at every position; not even close.
The Jets will win. Its a much better team then you think. You guys played close games all year long and your luck has run out. Consider it Week 16 karma.
WIDE RECEIVER/TIGHT END
seriously? The Jets are as good or better at every other wide receiver position? I’d love to have some of what you’re smoking right now.
And all of sudden your D is better at every position? How biased are you? I’m the biggest homer when it comes to my team but the fact is I’m also smart enough to realize when some teams are better than the team I root for. Apparently you’re not able to do that.
Oops. DE. Of course.
I don’t have to respond. See other post where it says that its hard to judge bc our numbers are deflated by bad QB play and your’s are inflated by great QB play. There’s no way to really know.
You actually think the numbers
from Wayne and Clark are inflated because of Peyton? So are you trying to say they are just average and he makes them look above average?
Yes. In a way.
Im more saying that they’re slightly above-avg but Peyton makes them look great.
Right, and the Jets recievers are extraordinary.
Would you consider Favre great? He was the QB for the Jets last year, and from the stats, both Keller and Cotchery have about the same numbers.
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." -Mark Twain
Slightly above average?
Have you had your brain fried?
They were first rounders for a reason, and I’m pretty sure that Peyton didn’t play with them in college, last time I checked.
Favre played with Jets last year, and Favre, last time I checked, was a pretty good quarterback. Uh huh… we all know how that ended.
University of Pennsylvania '14
That's the dumbest thing I've heard today
even worse than your prediction of the Jets winning by 2 TDs
Nice try
Braylon Edwards sucks, Jerricho Cotchery is on his best day would be a solid number 3 option for the Colts.
Yeah, we’ve won some close games because that is what great teams do. Teams who aren’t great lose seven games and choke away a lot of them, like the Jets. You lost to the freakin Falcons with Matt Ryan playing at about 60%. Nice work.
You speak of karma. Who has the bad karma here, again? Think about it. We got you here, and now your team is beyond arrogant and acting like it was disrespected, and some loons actually believe you are better than the Colts. It reminds me of that Entourage episode when Josh Weinstein, Ari’s former assistant tried to steal Vince behind Ari’s back, and Ari then punked him and announced that he was stealing all of his clients. See, we’re like Ari. We got you where you are right now, and rather than appreciate us, you disrespect us. If you don’t think you will be pummelled, than you are living in a HUGE fairy tale world. The Jets are not in the Colts league. Quit pretending and just be glad that you miraculously made it this far and will be our ticket to the Super Bowl.

Not in your league? We beat you. In your house.
Get the tissues and the tequilla ready for Sunday.
Are you freakin' kidding me?
You did not beat the Colts. You beat the Colts’ bench. You beat Curtis Painter. There is a difference. I cannot believe you are actually using that as an argument. We gave you that win and if you think otherwise you are a complete fool. Also, your WR/TE arguments received some counterarguments which you seem to have overlooked or just not been able to counter.
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." -Mark Twain
This is why Jets fans are so stupid
No you did not beat us, genius. We dominated you the entire game, regardless of the score, and pulled our starters. Name me one reason that you think anyone besides your RBs and Darelle Revis is anything close to being on the Colts level. Seriously. About 85% of your starters would fill our practice squad. You have about ZERO quality players, and a fatass moron for a coach. But soon we’ll put you out of your pathetic misery (oh, wait, your delusional and think you will win, so make that fantasy rather than misery) and you’ll be ready to bash your team mgt for whatever draft choices you guys make. You’ll give us a good laugh on Sunday. You’ve given us all a laugh by actually believing you are in our league. And of course there is the annual laugh all jets fans give us by their facial reactions on draft day. They may be severely ignorant people, but those Jets fans always give us a good laugh.

Are you Rex Ryan's son?
You make some stupid commentaries just like him
Quitters never win, but cheaters sometimes do
Just one?
Defensive end. You have no one close to Freeney and Mathis. For others better, Gary Brackett and Clint Sessin are as good or better than your LBs, Bethea is as good as Rhodes, maybe better, the only player on your D who is head and shoulder above our counterpart is Darrelle Revis, and that is it. And Wayne schooled him in their first matchup, and that was just in one half of play. So once, again our entire team is head and shoulders above yours.
Your receivers suck, your QB is too young and mistake prone, your o-line and running backs are better, I’ll give you that, but that is not enough to overcome all your many faults, including your head coach.
There is a reason you went 9-7 (your welcome for the winning record, by the way). It is because you are at best a mediocre team. You caught the Chargers off guard, good work. But that was a fluke. You know it. We know it. The entire sports world knows it.
Face it. You are literally the George Mason of the NFL playoffs. Everyone wants you to win, but knows you aren’t nearly good enough. You really shouldn’t have made it, but we let you in, and now we get to take you out. If you stay within two scores, then congrats on the moral victory.

Give you the DEs. I was wrong about that. LOL at the entirety of the rest of your post.
Thanks for the chuckle.
I will thank you in advance
for the chuckle your only-because-of-us just over .500 team will give the country on Sunday. Seriously. You can get a good feel for a team by just looking at the coach, and your coach is the biggest joke in the playoffs. Do the math, junior.

Rec'd for the George Mason reference.
They had a rude awakening once they reached the Final Four, just like the Jets will.

Yeah...good point
Sounds like Ray Rice’s stats the past couple of games prior to the Colts. How’d that work out again for them?
Our defense is not the pansies the Chargers D is, sorry to disappoint you. It will be a rude awakening for all you if you actually think you will intimidate the Colts and win. You know you will lose, though, right?

I thought about this too
Greene has had some great games, but I’m not going to play the “shouldn’t have drafted Brown” card. He still has tons of upside and had he not injured himself, I think we would have seen some more sexy stats from him, and still could the next two games.
