Playoff Roster Projections
NOT that I'm looking ahead, but.... ok I am looking ahead. With tomorrow's game completely inconsequential, with the exception of praying everyone comes out of it healthy, I was thinking about what roster moves the Colts might make in preparation for our first playoff game.
This week, the team made several moves - QB Willy was moved back to the PS, TE Santi was unfortunately IRd, and WR Sam "Guns" Giguere and TE Colin Cloherty were promoted to the active squad. My assumption is that both of these promotions were one-game promotions (with Cloherty's promotion being somewhat an emergency due to Santi's late-week injury).
I'm also a bit concerned that RB Chad Simpson was officially diagnosed with a concussion, which as of earlier this season, has a new set of rules surrounding return to practice / play.
Let the speculation begin... could Dom or Edge be waiting in the wings? what about a magnificent return by Marv? could we steal Mike McKenzie from the Saints after he was released? or will we all be scratching our heads as Polian reaches out to no-name players whose roles will be nothing more interesting than backup?
Discuss.

next man up
i think with mike hart and donald brown healthy if chad is a no go we are fine in the RB position. We will see what happens injury wise against the bills, hopefully nothing. Chad’s injury concern is in the return game. I still dont feel comfortable having tj rushing as our return guy. Although, if we have an extra spot i dont see a prolific name coming in. It would be another position and a practice squad guy stepping up or a former player in the system i.e. kiewan ratliff
I was going to post something about this topic...
…but you beat me to it. First – just IR Vinatieri already!!! I’m sorry! I love the guy and he kicked a hell of a game for us against Baltimore a couple years back, but he’s not ready. Stover is more than capable.
By the way, what’s the rule for signing player during the playoffs? If we keep AV, and then determine during the playoffs he’s simply not going to be ready, we loose his roster spot, right?
Also, I agree with the Giguere and Cloherty signings – somebody’s going to need to play in Buffalo. And when did Simpson get hurt? The one injury that worries me is A. Johnson. Does anyone know the details of that? Maybe we’ll see the return of Josh Thomas?
hey long time
i dont think we want to IR him though, but i dont feel like he is going to help us much either however we have no on that would bee great in that roster spot anyway
GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!

o think you can sign people on your practice squad when you go into the playoffs but no anyone not on it origionally can be signed onto it.
yes A. Jognson is my biggest worry now

I actually think hed make a good contribution for us in the playoffs.
Backup QB?
I’m a Peyton fan as much as anybody and certainly believe in his abilities, but what about backup QB? I can’t think of a stronger argument for benching PM last weekend than what our backup QB showed against the Jets (Sorry CP, nothing personal but that’s just how it is). If PM were to go down in the 1st half of a playoff/championship game, there doesn’t appear to be much of a chance for the Colts. Sure, no backup QB will have the talent of PM, but at least a veteran backup QB could give them a chance.
Agree 100%
Rewind 2 years back in the playoffs versus the Chargers. They have to put Volek in for a game winning drive. Can Painter do the same? I’m not betting money on it. I think it’s an extreme oversight to not have a veteran back there behind Peyton. Yeah, “Peyton never gets hurt”, but Murphy’s Law says there’s always a chance, and with that chance the Colts need someone who has more experience than a 6th round rookie. I’m not saying they need a backup capable of leading a game winning drive and being great, I’m just saying they need someone with some experience and capability to move the ball down the field.
I still don't like our secondary depth
Everyone in there has been nicked up and after Lacey it drops off a cliff.
I hate to say it but Automatic Adam needs to go.
He is just taking up roster space on the team. How many teams keep two kickers? If he missed more than half the season from his knee, then he just needs to go. Time to move on with Stover, Vinatieri was great but he was great in the past.

Giguere
looked ok…I would love to see him returning kicks in the playoffs!

you aren't going to agree with me about Automatic Adam?

I'm iffy on that subject
because I’m sure Adam can still kick it from outside of 40 and Stover can’t. I wouldn’t really be pissed either way they go, but I think its time to start looking for a young kicker who can take over. These old farts are gonna be done soon. Both of em. Also, as long as both are on the roster no other teams (like the Ravens) can pick them up. I would be pissed if the Ravens played the Colts in the playoffs and beat them by a FG from either of the two.

Your end point was a very good one and therefore I agree
but I still think they need to go sooner or later. It just doesn’t make sense to keep two kickers, one of them being injured almost the whole season.

I'm positive
one will go in the offseason. Which one? I could care less because both have been money, but like I said I think Adam can kick further still. But this is a position that needs to start being evaluated on, because neither of them will be around a lot longer. They have both been great, but it’s time to start looking.

My best friend is a Colts fan,
which is the only reason I actually feel I can speak on this matter, and he feels that Adam hasn’t been as clutch as of late. For example when he missed that extra point his first kick back. I just think it would benefit you guys to use Stover in the playoffs. But yeah, you guys need a new, young kicker.

The missed field goal
was due to a blown block. Someone let a guy through and that’s why it was blocked. Can’t really blame AV for that one. My guess on why he didn’t travel to buffalo was because the cold weather make that hip hurt like a bitch. That’s just my thought, could be wrong, but take it or leave it lol.
And I didn’t know we were best friends now!!! YAY!!!

I just still find that Adam is warn out and needs to go.
I’m not going to argue that he was amazing in the past but the past isn’t the future. And no we aren’t best fiends lol just agreement buddies, except right now apparently.
