Edgerrin James Named Honorary Colts Captain for Sunday's AFCCG

[UPDATE]: I edited this a little bit so it would look better on the frontpage. Big thanks to 88horsepower for posting this. --bbs

Such a classy move by the Colts. I love seeing James back on the Colts sidelines, even in this capacity!!!

From Colts.com:

Former Colts running back Edgerrin James and former United States Army soldier and Medal of Honor recipient Sammy Davis will serve as honorary co-captains for the Colts for this Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets.

James, the fourth overall pick by the Colts in the 1999 NFL Draft and the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, totaled 9,226 yards and 64 touchdowns rushing in his seven years with the club. James, a four-time Pro Bowler, led the league in rushing his first two seasons in the NFL. He set a club rookie rushing record with 1,553 yards as a rookie in 1999, and set the club rushing mark with 1,709 yards in 2000. James, who played with Arizona from 2006-08 and with Seattle in 2009, has 12,246 rushing yards, 11th in NFL history.

Sammy Davis, a native of Dayton, Ohio, joined the United States Army from Indianapolis. In November, 1967, Davis was an artillery cannoneer private with the 9th infantry division assigned to South Vietnam. For his service and courageous efforts in Vietnam, Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor—America’s highest award for military valor—by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. Davis is the only Vietnam era Medal of Honor recipient from Indiana. He also received a Silver Star and Purple Heart.

AWESOME

A bit copycat-ish of the Saints and Deuce, but I don’t care. LOVE this move!

How can you not love a team that does this?

LOL - Candy Man

But it’s not Sammy Davis Jr! Anyone know if there’s an easy way to open a roster spot for Edge like the Saints did for Deuce?

they could probably drop

any of the guys who were inactive last week, but if Edge is still technically a Seahawk, not sure we could sign him

LOVE IT!!!!!

This is just awesome. Man, people are going to nuts when they announce him at the game. This is why I love the Colts.

I think this is going to be one of those “This one’s for Edge!” things. Smart move, bringing back a beloved former player. It’s great motivation for the players, and the fans.

Go Edge Go!!

This is great! Edge will always be a Colt to us, not a Cardinal and not a Seahawk. It’s still tough for me to see Hart wearing his number. Hope we retire it when Edge declares retirement.

I love this!

Edge was one of the players I really really loved and it hurt to see him go but we all knew he was declining a bit in production. That being said this is… AWESOME!

by NYKings on Jan 21, 2010 3:21 PM EST reply actions

Isn't Edge bad luck???

Didnt the Colts win it all immediately after his departure? Weren’t they miserable in the playoffs with him? Wasn’t he on the team when the Jets smoked them in the playoffs 41-0?

by Crackback on Jan 21, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Are you a bad luck charm?

Have you ever seen the Jets in the Super Bowl? Probably not.

But wait... what happened to McAllister this week?

He retired.

Is Edge officially hanging them up? Will he be in Colts blue when he does so? And will he get a SECOND ring?

I know it’s corny, but I’d love for him to be signed and active for the SB (knock wood) and carry just one stretch play for old time’s sake. We probably don’t have the roster room….

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

He's retiring

But it’s not a good choice of ending a profilic carrer like his, playing for Arizona, being treated like garbage and then playing for the Seahawks… Trying to redeem himself in the AFCCG? Nah, he might fumble the ball and bang! Good bye AFC Championship

That would be such a great moment.

And yes, I think we will announce his retirement this game.

I like the choices

Yes, both of them. It might merely be symbolic to do this for Edge – and I’m certain he’d rather earn such a spot on the field – but I still love the move. He was a huge part of the (still continuing) Colts best years, and I don’t think anyone things bad about him at all. I’d love to see him on the sidelines, even in just an honorary capacity.

Although, like a commenter above said: It’d also be cool to dress him and run him for a down. Just one more stretch play for old times sake. Thing is, that probably wouldn’t happen unless the game were a total blowout, and I don’t think that’ll happen against the Jets.

Wonder if the team’ll think about repeating this if they get to the Super Bowl. That’d be cool too.

________

On top of that, the other guy’s an impressive fellow too. Anyone read the Wikipedia entry on him?

On that day, (then PFC Sammy L. Davis’s) unit was west of Cai Lay when they fell under heavy mortar attack by the Viet Cong as around 15,000 VC swarmed the area. Upon detecting an enemy position, Davis manned a machine gun to give his comrades covering fire so they could fire artillery in response. Davis was wounded, but ignored warnings to take cover, taking over the unit’s burning howitzer and firing several shells himself. He also disregarded his inability to swim (due to injuries; Davis knew how to swim), crossing a river on an air mattress to help rescue three wounded American soldiers. He ultimately found his way to another howitzer site to continue fighting the VC attack until they fled.

Wow.

Here’s a Military.com writeup on him that goes into a bit more detail on the action that got him awarded the Medal of Honor; the author calls Davis “The ‘Real’ Forrest Gump”. :D

http://www.military.com/NewContent/0,13190,MoH_Sammy_Davis,00.html

Ok, look, I’ll admit that his current website’s just a teeny bit corny. All right, fine, it’s way the hell corny. But a Blue Max winner who swam a river to rescue 3 US soldiers, then kept on fighting while wounded himself gets a LOT of leeway from me. A LOT. He can corny up his web presence all he wants, and I’ll still call the guy a hero.

That’s where I read about him before. I completely forgot about that case until now. Anyway, the story ended well; the medal was recovered, but I knew I had read or heard about him before. I just didn’t remember exactly what about.

Go Edge!

This is awesome. Edge has kind of had it rough over the last few years. I know, I know, he played in the Superbowl, and he’s an older back… But, he got trounced in Seattle, and, more importantly, his wife died last year of a brain tumor, I believe.

He was such an important part of the franchise, and he’s obviously well loved by his former teammates. This is good to hear… Go Immokalee! And of course, GO COLTS!!!!

one of my favorites. I still think the guy’s got some left in the tank. He had to learn 2 new offenses and I think that contributed to low number. He knows Indy’s offense as well as any one and I think he could be a factor givin a better O line.

by coltsfan723 on Jan 22, 2010 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

I had the same question

Hart might get all classy and give it up for 1-2 games. Edge cannot wear #5 unless he’s a QB P or K. That was his request coming in to the league and they turned him down, which is why he went with 3 + 2 (=5)

But we’re all getting way ahead of ourselves.

Curtis Martin? Oh, the New England Patriot! Yeah, why’d the Jets want him…? (kidding)

what a bunch of morons—what good is it at an away game? will CM silence the crowd? He might juice up the Jets players in the locker room, but every time the jumbotron shows Edge on the sidelines, the crowd will roar like a jet engine.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

by Bobman on Jan 22, 2010 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

I was a surprised when Hart got 32

For all i know, Hart requested it for some reason. Not sure what it would be since he wore 20 at UofM. But Rushing has 20, so maybe 32 means something to him. Anyway, i was surprised the Colts didn’t reserve 32.

Hart might give it up for a game.

I would love him forever for giving it up if he does.
