Playoff Picture: Who do you want?

Since the head writer of this blog has no interest in the subject matter I figured I would get the discussion ball rolling.

Now my writing isn't the greatest so I'm going to make a skeleton piece for us to focus on. Then as a blog we're going to hash out all the minute details in the comment section below. For everyone that wants to move on to the playoffs here's your opportunity. This is going to echo the Colts mantra and we're going to write a post using teamwork. Give us statistics for why we will play who we will and more importantly why we will beat them. (If you are providing statistics, links would be nice) Or even better give us your vague opinion with no numbers or evidence to back it up and we'll tell you why you are retarded without offering a lick of counter evidence to your point.

Star-divide

So here are the three scenarios that are possible in the second round Colts game.

1. The Ravens beat the Patriots. The Colts would thus get the Ravens. They have already defeated the Ravens once this year in a hard fought game in Baltimore. I would think this scenario is favorable to the Colts advancing.

2. The Patriots defeat the Ravens. The Jets defeat the Bengals. This would find the ultimate rematch of week 15. All of this crap can resurface and then when the Colts beat the living snot out of the Jets we can all sleep better at night.

3. The Patriots defeat the Ravens. The Bengals defeat the Jets. This finds the Colts taking on the Bengals. They kinda sorta played their starters in the last game and got a shellacking at the hands of the Jets. I find them to be the least favorable scenario. Though I'm kinda torn between who I'd rather see. The Bengals or Baltimore.

Thats all the time I have to hash anything else out. This is where you all come in. Tell us who you want and why, or who you'd prefer not to see. Consider this a pre-playoff open thread.

Bengals

After being eviscerated last night by the Jets, who wouldn’t want them? Their running game is OK but with such a poor passing game they fool no one. Bullitt will make 20 tackles of Benson when the Colts put 8 men in the box on 80% of Cincy’s offensive snaps. Hall and Joseph are good corners, but not good enough to stop all the Colts’ weapons.

It’s appropriate that New York and Cincinnati are playing in the first round, since the Jets are just the Bengals with a better (much better) defense. Their offense is one-dimensional, too. Had we not had pull-the-starters-gate in Week 16, the Colts would have handily beaten the Jets (remember, the Jets, despite rushing for 200 yards, only scored one offensive touchdown). Unquestionably the Jets are hot and full of themselves, but the Colts present a brick wall into which they will squarely run.

I think the Ravens are the least promising matchup for the Colts, despite the Colts’ prior win. Rice and Mcgahee are an excellent tandem and Flacco has two good targets in Mason and Heap. Again, don’t overlook history—the Colts did shut them down in November. Defensively, the Ravens’ secondary is beat up and getting worse, but they do have Ngata, Suggs and Lewis up front, and any secondary can be improved by a good pass rush.

I’m just thankful NE is the #3 seed—even without Welker, they are the best of the first-weekend competitors and certainly the most dangerous for the Colts. Now, the only way to see them is in the AFC championship game, and I doubt they make it that far. But Brady and Moss are a great combination; stranger things have happened.

The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in the stars, but in ourselves.

Give me Cincinnati...

They have little to no passing attack. Containing Chad Johnson shouldn’t be hard given we would have Hayden and Bethea blanketing him on third downs and using Bullit on running downs.

Not to mention I do not believe their offensive line can block Freeney and Mathis. Their defense wouldn’t contain Wayne and Clark.

I really want Cincinnati. They do not match up well with us on offense or on defense. Why would we want to see a rejuvenated Jets team that actually “believes” they can beat us.

And as BlueShoe said… The sky would fall over Indianapolis if the Jets come back to Indy and beat us! Polian should be fired or step down if you ask me!

Hmm, this a tough one

I wouldn’t mind the Bengals since Peyton has pwned them his entire career, but getting the Jets would be fun, too. Freeney and Mathis would friggin’ kill Sanchez and Reggie will get the opportunity to burn Revis for the entire game. It’s a toss-up for me.

i thought u said in another thread u were rooting for the ravens

i see the pats beating the ravens but not the chargers. though we did upset the “hot” no.1 seed chargers in 06 w. useless wr corp led by a bug eyed idiot…so we do have a chance but its a long shot :(.
i want the Bengals to win….i don’t want to see a rushing team run the ball all day bc its boring as favre

rooting for the ravens was to beat the raiders since the broncos were about to lose to the chiefs.

the ravens win made sure the stealers didn’t make the playoffs and one less in for the texans. i wont root against you guys in the playoffs against them though. i wouldn’t mind seeing you guys again in the championship round.

GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!

Bengals for me...

For many of the reasons stated above I’d like to see the Bengals but the one team I don’t want to see is the Ravens – while their defense isn’t spectacular they didn’t do horribly against us in November. I was at that game and the one thing I remember:

Man, I hate Ray Rice in a very respectful way. Rice is a great player and he can really do damage come playoff time so while it wouldn’t be terrible to play the Ravens (I do feel the Colts would beat them) I think the Bengals and Jets are much easier competition.

by NYKings on Jan 4, 2010 2:05 PM EST reply actions

Bengals look like the easiest opponent.

and the Ravens the toughest. Funny as they’re the only team we’ve beaten of the three.

Jets would be fun, but it would bring up all the nastiness from the last few weeks and I would rather avoid that.

I’m just going to assume we get the Ravens and prepare that way. You know, since my preparation has so much meaning to game outcomes.

Jets

1) I think they are the weakest team of the 3
2) Some of their fans think they beat the real Colts
3) Rex Ryan talking smack after declaring they were out of the playoff hunt 3 weeks ago

I think we’ll beat any of the three teams, though, so bring ’em on.

jets will win

wildcard round:
Regardless how Jet’s made it to the play-offs, they have enough momentum to beat Bengals.
Patriots will win over Ravens, Welker or not.

Divisional: Colts will Eat Jets for lunch
and here is the surprise upset: Patriots over Chargers!

AFC championship:
COLTS vs Patriots: Close game before Colts pull away late 3rd quarter.

SuperBowl: Colts vs Saints

by DaColtsFan on Jan 4, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions

I feel the same way, but without Welker I do not believe Brady has an option to be a blitz beater the way Welker was...

Simply put the Patriots are not going to beat San Diego on the road, but I think we would be favorites vs the Patriots at home without Welker.

The fact is they can call Billy Boy the genius all he wants, but Welker is a major blow and it is hard to replace someone who the entire offense is centered around!

Now with that being said…

I’d love to play the Chargers in Indy so we can get that monkey off our backs…

by Justin Pugh on Jan 4, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

the difference is

Welker isnt only a blitz beater, but it beats the blitz and then some. Without him they’ll beat the blitz for 2-4 yards instead of 12-15

Pats always find a way.

There was no Wes in 2001-2004 for them. I think Patriots will eek out a win against bolts due to their shear experience in play-offs. To me, honestly, I would rather have Colts dominate the Patriots in the second half of this decade than anything else. I don’t consider Chargers as our nemises, they will not be in a discussion for team of the decade like Belichick’s Patriots, and besides that will give all the pundits another year of sour grapes (Colts made it to SB because they didn’t have to face chargers). I don’t know why but I love it when Cole’s and King’s of this world keep making fools of themselves, so much so that I want to give them more ammo to keep yapping.
btw.. I m only scared of the divisional round for some reason so want an easier team.. Colts will beat anybody AFC championship.

Don’t care who makes the SB from NFC at this point.

by DaColtsFan on Jan 4, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions

but 2001-2004

they had a defense. That doesn’t exist anymore. Or its a shell of its former self.

And we were not as balanced on O or D as we are now

and we played them in Foxboro 4 straight times? more? if we play them in the AFCCG, it’s in Indy.

They also had Corey Dillon in 2004 (03 as well?). If he was not such a malcontent headcase in Cincy, he’d be preparing for the HOF about now…. Right about now they’re drawing straws to see which RB to bench each week, which of the fragile, fumbling twins (Maroney and Taylor) should get the ball, and who else is injured back there? …the underrated Morris or REALLY underrated Faulk? Brady has blossomed since then, but really it’s a very different team.

I voted for the Jets, partly because I detest them, partly as payback for 41-0, partly to shut up anybody talking about the “loss” two weeks ago, and partly because I think they are the weakest team out there. I’m a man of many parts.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

1st: Jets, 2nd: Bengals (could be 1st but a Jets rematch to shut up the whiners would be EXCELLENT!!!), 3rd: Ravens…I’m glad the Pats will face SD before we beat either in the AFC championship.

by BlueShooToo on Jan 4, 2010 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

I voted for the Bengals after watching them last night.

But I think we could beat any of those teams. Any time.

I’m new to the site and am only starting to get the in’s and out’s of it…so now I see you should skip all the jibberish and ranting on the the “front page” and go directly to the fan posts for all the good, meaningful discussion I logged in for. Cool!

Anyone but the Pats, I say…let them and the Chargers have their way with each other first. I would be most happy to see the Jets come back…they can’t score fast enough with Sanchez or their rush against a healthy and rested Colt’s D to keep up with Peyton et al. Bengals in the same boat, as far as I’m concerned…can’t score enough to keep up.

The Colts couldn't even play

the Patriots in the divisional round since the it’s the #1 seed and must play the losest seed available from the Wild Card round. So either the Bengals (#4), Jets(#5), or the Ravens(#6) are possible opponents.

by KMR24 on Jan 4, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Right.

Just saying I’m glad we don’t have to play them, not that we would/could. Once the Jets trounced the ’gals, the Pats stayed 3rd seed and destined for SD (if they beat the Birds).

Revis Island (?)

Maybe I saw this wrong, but there was graphic on last night’s game showing Revis’ success against various receivers this year. I seem to recall Reggie Wayne had as many (if not more) yards and receptions against Revis compared to others he covered (including Moss, TO, and Steve Smith). Impressive for RW considering Reggie only played 2/3 of the game. The announcers didn’t make mention of it and I saw it only for a few seconds so I may have read it wrong…anyone see this? I’d take that matchup again. Bring on the Jets!!

by BlueShooToo on Jan 4, 2010 6:19 PM EST reply actions

We were discussing that last night

in the thread. I didn’t see the graphic myself, but other bloggers and did and were happy that Michaels and Collinsworth didn’t have the nerve to mention Reggie’s name as a victim of Revis’ “island”. In the Jets’ game, Reggie burned Revis at least twice in the short time he played against him. Just for the simple fact that Reggie can prove that he is the best Wide Receiver in the game right now, I want the Colts to play the Jets.

Were the Bengals really THAT bad...

…or were they just not showing their A-game against the Jets last night? They were totally handled in every aspect, but I’ve read “expert analysis” that said they just weren’t giving it all because of the short week and having already locked up their spot. Coach Marvin sure looked ticked!! I would have thought if they were going to the trouble of playing starters they should at least try to stop the Jets on 3rd down. Once.

by BlueShooToo on Jan 4, 2010 6:47 PM EST reply actions

they didn't play all their starters...or so I heard

I don’t really know the Bengals at all as a team, but I heard that they only played a couple of their starting defensive players. They supposedly did play a lot of their starting offense players minus Benson, and I guess Chad Always-Changing-Or-Threatening-To-Change-His-Last-Name went out early with that alleged injury from the pre-game warm-ups.

by flores salicis on Jan 4, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

I like our draw in the playoffs this year

I look at these 3 teams and none of them are playin good football in Dec. They all had chances to increase their seeding over the past 3 weeks and all 3 lost at least one of those games (The Bengals actually lost 3 of their last 4) so I really like our chances in our 1st playoff game no matter who we get.

1st choice: Bengals..They just look “uninterested” in winning. Colts 31-13
2nd choice: NY Jets…their solid run offense and very good defense are worrisome but we still have them outmanned in all other aspects..This win will taste the sweetest…Colts 30-17
3rd choice: Baltimore…They are like the Jets, good run offense, good D plus they know us well…we still win but it goes a whole 4 quarters..Colts 20-13

Side note: I am so glad Pitt and/or Houston didn’t make the playoffs..They would’ve given us a much tougher potential first game.

He's improving with each game, and can stay in bounds and take a hit and gets some good YAC's. Look for this rookie to finish strong.

I want

Arizona to beat GB
Philly to beat Dallas

Saints to beat Philly
Arizona to beat Minnie

Don’t care about the winner of Arizona v Saints, either one.

I want the Patriots to beat the Ravens
I want the Jets and Bengals to play a hard fought contenst, good luck to all involved.

I want the Chargers to beat the Patriots
I want the Colts to win their game

I want the Colts to beat the living shit out of the Chargers, and while Rivers is acting like a douche on the sidelines, I want Mookie to go sit on his face.

Colts v Saints/Cardinals in Miami.

Never doubt Peyton Manning, he’ll make you look silly
Joseph Addai is a good running back.
