Sam Giguere

Caldwell seemed to indicate that there would be consideration of Sam Giguere's role with the team, considering his great special teams returns against Buffalo.  I think he looked great and would love if he could do that in the playoffs.  So, do you guys think he can do that again?  Will he get the chance?  Anyone know anything about this guy?  All I know is that he was a great, fast wide receiver during his college days (in Quebec) and Polian snapped him up after he had already signed to play in the CFL.

he seemed to show potential, however like someone said the other day if he was so good why hasn't he been returning in

other normal weather games?? no he isn’t on the active roster was right but he was in the preseason so did he just not get a chance?? i will say i think he should get a shot and could be good but im not sure that this last game says he will necessarily

Giguere

looked really good in the Buffalo game. That could be do to his talent, but could also be do to the coverage units being kind of tight do to the iced over field. I would like to see if he can do it inside The Luke. He can’t really be any worse than Simpson. Simpson has had a few good run backs including the TD return, but other than that he usually doesn’t make it past the 20 yard line. Giguere made it past several times. And good field position for Peyton would make the Colts VERY dangerous through the Playoffs. So, I say we should give the guy a shot. Caldwell said he made a “favorable impression” on coverage and kick returns, so my guess is we will see this guy on the playoff roster.

That would make me nervous

I know Chad Simpson isn’t going to wow anybody on kick returns, but at least we know he isn’t going to put the ball on the ground. I don’t know if the playoffs is the time to start throwing people into positions they’re not used to.

I see what you're saying though

It was nice to see some new energy back there, rather than have somebody consistently running into the back of his own guy.

by Naptime! on Jan 5, 2010 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

I only said it because I'm thinking the coaches were okay w/putting him out there since the game didn't mean anything

And I don’t know if they’ll have the same mindset (maybe they’ve seen something in practice?) when there’s more at stake.

by Naptime! on Jan 5, 2010 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

The fact that he did that

without all the good ST players, makes his chances better I would think. I’d like to see him get a shot. Field position will be KEY in the playoffs

My ONE concern

fumbles. That seems to be how Simpson is coached—a rtn is nice, but a fumble and you’re dinner for the big cat act in the circus. Just give Peyton the ball in a reasonable location, preferably in the stadium.

They can certainly try him out. If he fumbles, ship him off to some cannibal tribe in the south Pacific.

But 5 more yards per possession in field position (Say 8 per KR and 3 per PR) probably equates to about 3 pts a game, and that puts our offensive season long average from roughly 8th in the league to maybe 2nd or 3rd (ignoring the final two weeks, which skew us way down). It puts our season avg on par with SD I’d guess. 3 pts per game in the playoffs can potentially mean everything.

I don’t want to get greedy—I don’t expect TD runbacks, but starting at the 30 or beyond every once in a while, or getting more than 10 on punt returns would be nice…..

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

i think that as far as the fumble concern how he handled it this last week for his first time was pretty impressive in that snow and wind

and on an icy field. that is one of the hardest conditions to hold onto a ball so i he could do it there i think he can handle not fumbling in regular conditions. could we be wrong yes but i dont think i am about that part of it. so i say we try him out

3 points per game may be right, Bobman

At least this article seems to agree:
http://www.advancednflstats.com/2007/09/importance-of-field-position.html

I trust this math more than the DVOA stats used to determine, in my post below, that Giguere performing like he did would be worth less than 3 points. I think your estimate was right on.

by GabrielF on Jan 6, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Well, yeah he could be worse than Simpson.

He could drop the KO’s/punts or fumble the ball when hit. At least Simpson and Rushing don’t have that problem.

Maybe he showed a tendency to do this in practice. Just speculation here.

Guns is the man

Put him back at returner.

They should have kept Courtney Roby…

I just like how French (AND Canadian) he is.

I didn’t get to see much of the game.. I only watched the Peyton/Dallas/Reggie bits, but how was he better than Simpson? And how good have Buffalo’s ST coverage units been?

by diagenesis on Jan 5, 2010 6:26 PM EST reply actions

Yes

Think of the SD playoff game last year. Their return game has fallen off drastically, but they started most or all of their scoring drives on our side of the 50, thanks to Scifres pinning us deep and Sproles generating a good return. We can now cover decently, which is good, but if we can get good field position on a regular basis…. wow, I hardly dare imagine it!

Buff's STs have traditionally been good, but no idea about this year in particular

It’s mainly Magee as a returner, I think. Let’s check in with footballoutsiders…..

Buff’s ST were #1 last year and #12 this year… (We were #24 in 2008 and stand at #20 for 2009). Buff’s KO coverage unit is ranked above average (a good bit better than ours) and punt coverage is also above average, marginally better than ours. So their units are okay, but not spectacular. The raw numbers for Buff Kick coverage and punt coverage are 4.7 and 5.9, respectively, whereas Colts have 1.5 and 3.9. (League best is 15.1 and 18.2. League worst is —35 (Pitt) and -16 (GB) respectively.

In the playoffs, the coverage units we could see are (for simplicity I am using FO raw numbers—asssume 0.0 is average)

Jets KO: -2.3 P: 2.2
’Gals KO: -3.8 P: -3.3
Raves 9.8 -2.2
SD -6.1 1.4

So Buff has better coverage units than all our likely AFC opponents, except Balt’s KO coverage. I feel pretty good about Simpson OR Sam.

Holy crap, we’re actually going into the playoffs with a superior ST squad than our opponents…. what’s that like? (Jets and Balt have very good return games, but aside from that, our ST looks better than the other AFC playoff teams.)

Thank you for the fantastic response.

I’ve had a hard time making it to the stats site after our last two weeks.

So he did well against a good ST team. Can’t hurt to give him at least a try when the game isn’t on the line.

Brian Burke and Football Outsiders

When Brian Burke of Advanced NFL Stats used Football Outsiders’ Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average to calculate the effect of special teams, he found that 1% of a team’s performance is the kick return, but 3% was the punt return. Even assuming Giguere provides a 50% boost to returns, this is not a significant improvement, as per the study. Certainly not worth anywhere near 3 points – assuming the study is right.

Of course, the validity of DVOA as a proper way to measure this is unclear. I think to casual observers, like us, it would be a huge boost to Peyton, if he could consistently start on the 25 and rely on one 30 to 35 yard start every game. On his 5 returns, he averaged just under 25, with a long of 36. If Giguere could deliver more, then it’s hard for me to imagine that it’s not worth 3 points.

So, here is the latest Giguere news:

The Colts are seriously considering keeping him on the roster. And the word is he won’t be deployed as a wide receiver. So, unless he’s been hitting field goals from 50 yards out in practice or is replacing Curtis Painter, it looks like we’ll probably get to see what he can do this post-season.

Also, the Star is reporting that part of his not being promoted earlier had to do with a broken leg. Considering that, and the fact that he didn’t drop the ball in horrible weather, I don’t think there’s much worry about him being a butterfingers.

I’m excited, kids. He might not be Jesus, but he could be great for the team.

Clarification

The sentence about “his 5 returns” refers to Giguere’s returns in the Bills game.
