The Case of records, and Brett Favre

Hey guys. I'll try keep this post short and sweet.

NFL Records, to some, are a big deal. No reason they shouldn't. The best of high school play college, which whom very few make the NFL, and to set records at THAT level, is something spectacular. We, as Peyton Manning fans, should know this. To set a game record, or a season record is one thing. But to hold an NFL alltime record, one you've been chipping away at for 15+ YEARS (almost as long as I've been ALIVE) it becomes a big part of you.

Now, here's the meat of the post. Brett Favre, the record holder for most consecutive games, might have to miss a game. Since he's still considering playing, and not ruled out, you know his injuries are not THAT bad. That being said, would you guys see it as wrong, or have a problem with him just playing a few drives, or heck just taking 1 snap to hold the record, then sitting out?

Please don't be biased. Don't think that because it's a QB you might not like or a record we want Peyton to break, you want him to not play. Picture if Peyton gets minorly injured(relax, I just knocked on wood) and he can still play, but chooses not to (say we're 13-2 with playoffs locked up) we would not have an issue with him playing 1 drive just to keep his own streak.

So, please no bias. Since he's played through almost 2 decades to have this record, would you guys have an issue with him taking 1 or 2 snaps just to preserve it?

1 more thing, This is for 1 game. If he needs to be out for a month, don't do it. That I'm against. This is ONLY if the injury is for 1 game..

Would you mind Favre(if he truly is too hurt) plays just 1 or 2 snaps to hold his record, then sits out?
No! That record is very hard to come by! Let him hold onto it!

Yes, I would care. That is low and a cheap way to hold a record.

It doesn't matter

I think it’s not possible for Favre to get through this season.

Still

Keep the topic to just this next game.

I’m just curious to see how you guys think about this. Because, without a doubt, at least 90% here would be okay if it was Peyton.

No Problem

I really can’t see why anyone would have a problem with him going in a game just to keep his record intact.
I’m not a Favre fan but the man played hurt before over the years, so if he is only able to go in for a snap to keep it going, he earned it.

Eh Brett Favre laid down so Michael Strahan could set a sack record

Weak sauce, maybe, but a record is a record and a start is a start no matter what the intention is of playing time. Favre will definitely start on Sunday against the Patriots. The doctors will shoot him up so his ankle is numb and he’ll go out and hopefully be the same pick-throwing cowboy he’s been so far this season.

Keep the faith!

He's just having fun out there

Beware the ole gunslinger… if you are a fan of his team.

Now if you need a field plowed, or have a WR cadre full of neighbors wearing jeans, #4 is your guy…..

Regarding the record, I think Brett has fought the good fight all along and played through worse injuries, generally well. If he plays one series, I’d be pretty ticked. We know ankle sprains—the pain-killers lasted about a half for Freeney, who put much more strain on his ankle than Favre (and is 10 years younger). I’d expect at least a half from Favre. Of course if he’s not taking practice snaps to protect the ankle, that means Jackson is and inserting Jackson would be less of a liability than if Favre were fresly injured and TJax had NO snaps all week….

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

If you watch that commercial closely

you will see that he actually throws a pick!

I have an issue with it...

Here’s why….it’s not a streak if all you do is go out, hand off the ball, and then leave the game…..

I have no beef with players doing that when the season is wrapped up and either you are going home for the year or your positioning in the playoffs is set….because at that point, it’s really kind of moot…

However, if you are injured to the point that you can’t play the game, then yes….it should not count…

Having said all that, I agree with Marima that he will 100% be in the lineup to play…. unless the fractures in his ankle are significant enough to keep him from playing……and if he does play…id be looking to punish him…

by DevilsReject on Oct 27, 2010 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

I also have an issue with it...

Of course its weak if he goes out and hands off for no gain up the middle, but if he wants to do that, so be it. What bothers me is that it disrespects the rest of his team. I presume that the Vikings players prepared for this next game and intend to try to win the game. Why should they take a play off just to give Brett one more start? Besides, I’m not a doctor, but a fractured ankle sounds pretty serious. Wouldn’t playing Tarvaris Jackson give them a better chance to win? If the answer is yes, then it disrespects the effort of all the other players on the team to play Favre because it says the individual is more important than winning.

I don't care either way, but

Colts fans who do care and think its a cheap way to hold a record should take a moment to consider that their team has done this regularly for their players, too. Peyton takes a few snaps and receivers have made a few early receptions then took a seat in “meaningless” late season games to keep their respective streaks and records alive. It happens.

My only interest in this is to see if Childress has the balls to even suggest this. I think the diva player-coach dynamic is far more interesting than his record. Schadenfreude…guilty as charged.

Late season stats

are in a different league compared to an injury. I view those 2-3 last games of the season as potentially pre-season style games in most cases, as there are usually teams that have wrapped up their division/conference at that point.

If they can go out, play a quarter or two, manage to get some work in…..why shouldn’t they?

However, the Colts ALWAYS play a full series with all their starters in every game…unless injuries are affecting them..

Eff Favre...

Frickin Douche….he is an egotistically son of a bitch. In his interview yesterday he came out and said, “I played through injuries that other people would never have been able to play through.” In the words of a hilarious black comedian, “Watchyouwant, A COOKIE?”…I mean really, ass…you don’t think you get enough recognition and attention from the media that you have to come out and say shit like this. Watch him get away with all the texts and voicemails and penis pictures he sent because he gets special treatment…fuck him. If he plays, I hope he gets crushed…if I was AP, I’d step away from a blitz pickup and let this asshole get lit up. The whole me first bullshit is so annoying, and he isn’t even good to be that full of himself. Go away old man….

sorry, I had to.

I'm fine with him taking a couple of snaps

The record is an admirable thing, but it will always be tainted. In the end, Brett Favre clearely cares more about the record and himself than the team. He will play if there is any way. Not because he thinks he can help his team, but because it will focus all the cameras and attention on himself. It’s been the same old shit every year. Everything he does is to manipulate all the focus to himself.

Given the state of the Vikings, the best think they could possibly do is cut him. He won’t be around next year. He’s not productive this year. There season, barring a complete turn around, is over. Get rid of the distraction and play football.

Favre has 2 fractures

Good for him if he can gut it out for a couple series. With their O line not playing up to the standards of a year or 2 ago, Tavarris Jackson is prolly a better fit. He can make the throws (sorta) AND escape the rush. I thought he looked pretty good in preseason. My bold prediction: Jackson will move into the starting position (if not this week then next)… and Minny will still make the playoffs.

My prediction

Farve plays, plays badly and causes Minny to miss the playoffs through his usual selfishness.

by strandedincarolina on Oct 30, 2010 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

And Childress is fired before Brett retires.

Again.

And I agree with you SiC (Charleston?), no way Vikes make the playoffs. Tav Jack ain’t leading that mess of a team anywhere.
