Pat Angerer fans shouldn’t throw a party just yet, but there appears to be some thought to moving him into the starting lineup at OLB in place of Philip Wheeler on the strong side. I’ve pushed for this move in the past, but told many fans who asked that it probably wouldn’t happen because the Colts liked Angerer staying in the middle.

But Angerer played so well at Washington, 11 tackles and one sack, the Colts are evidently giving some thought to how to get the rookie on the field more, now that MLB starter Gary Brackett is back from missing one game with a groin injury. "It’s a possibility," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said Friday of the second-round pick out of the University of Iowa playing more with the base defense.

Phil B suggests that the Colts could be looking to replace Wheeler with Angerer at SAM.

Replace them all

Replace them all, I say, just kidding :-).

Brackett and Sessions would have to play much better than they have even if Wheeler is replaced. The LB corp is very much like the O-line or D-line, the sum of the parts is a lot of times greater than the parts themselves.

Haha you had to gloat

Yep, I knew you were going to gloat at some point :-).

Again, for the whole 6 games, Sessions has been just as bad as Wheeler, IMO. I think it is more in response to a question that a user had in the Polian Corner, much before you wrote about Wheeeler, I heard that question on radio on Monday and it was updated in the Q & A in the Polian Corner on Tuesday afternoon. Unless you were the user that asked the question????

Here is the Q & A:

Q: Is there any thought about getting Pat Angerer on the field at outside backer to get he and Clint Session on the field at the same time? Wouldn’t that compensate for the weakness at defensive tackle? And with Antonio Johnson hurt, will Ricardo Mathews get more playing time?

A: The answer to the second question is yes. In answer to the first question, is I guess I would say, ‘Right church, wrong pew.’ There’s no question that Pat and Clint are very explosive, aggressive, instinctive players. You would like to get them on the field together if you could, in some form or fashion. The question is, ‘How do you do that?’ We don’t measure it based on statistics, especially tackles, because that’s a statistic that’s not very reliable. But in terms of the way they play, their quickness to the ball, their ability to punch people when they tackle, their instincts – very similar. How do you do that? The staff’s sitting down and thinking about that right now. As to the purported weakness at defensive tackle, it is not based on ability as much as it is on function. We are not functioning at the correct fundamental level at that position, which is why it can be corrected and it will get better. Of course, having Mookie Johnson back would certainly help and Rico will have some difficulty when he’s first in there, because that’s the toughest position for a rookie to learn how to play in the National Football League other than quarterback. For example, (second-year defensive tackle) Fili (Moala) is having a heck of a year. Well, it’s his second year. He should. A year ago people were complaining about Fili. We said, ‘Give him time. Everything will be OK.’ Rico’s going to struggle, too. The bad news is we haven’t been having the kind of play at defensive tackle that we did last year. The good news is we can correct that fundamentally. That’s one of the things that John Teerlinck, our great defensive line coach, was trying to get done during the bye week. We can get better at that.

I also think Coffeedrinker, another poster opined about...

Right church, wrong pew. Maybe it was to mean that Session is the one that needs to be replaced. Who knows!!! As long as we limit Arian Foster to 100 yards or less, I am fine with any move they make.

What I am excited and looking forward to is the play of Ricardo Mathews. It seemed like he was quite disruptive in the Redskins game.

Don't expect much from Mathews.

He’s a rookie DT. We all remember how bad Moala looked last year…

I’d like to see Mathews succeed though. He was a disruptive presence in the preseason.

One has to wonder if last year was an anomaly for Session

There is little doubt he will not be resigned at the end of the year. Rookie Kavell Conner played very well in his place before breaking his foot.

Anyone who has a problem with Joseph should stop watching Colts football. It's unfair to expect a back to replace Edge, and Addai has been excellent in all areas when he is healthy.

That's the Colts MO

I think the ONLY LB we will ever give a contract to is Brackett. I hope we spend the money on an upgrade along the O-Line,

he played well his rookie year too if you remember. You also must remember that he had a hamstring injury

that set him back a couple of games and he’s continuing to recover from that and getting his game legs and instincts back. Don’t worry about Clint at all guys.

I love Clint and would love to see him in Blue for a long time.

Especially with that beard! Every time I see him that Smurf song starts running through my head. Takes me back a few years.

My point was that the Colts don’t normally re-sign LBs. It’s just not where we spend our money. Sad but true.

I like the move......

Angerer is a better all around football player than Wheeler. He knows how to fundamentally tackle (which Wheeler struggles with) and was pretty impressive on coverage and blitz in the Redskins game.

Replacing Wheeler at OLB is just one move I hope we make. I have not been impressed at all with our DT play. Very, very weak. Let’s bring on Mathews and see what he can do. I would also like to see more of Eric Foster. We need mean and nasty guys, who can push interior linemen around, playing at our DT spots. It’s all about collapsing the pocket so the bookends can do their work.

I think Ricardo is a bigger Foster clone

To me, Ricardo has the same athleticism that Foster has but is bigger while doing it. I think he is 290 lbs or something like that while Foster is about 275 lbs. To me, he looked disruptive in that Redskins game. If he succeeds, Foster or Dawson will be fighting for minutes big time and it is bound to happen if Ricardo continues to play well.

by chad72 on Oct 29, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

i'd take that. But can Rico do Foster's post-sack stomp celebration?

agreed

like Angerer,, lot of energy hard woker and plays hard and not tentative, Wheeler can back him up

We need Mathews/Foster/Fili to all play better

because Muir is either injured or regressed and Mookie is out. People love to complain about our O-line but our DTs are the weakest part of this team, IMHO.

I don't about everyone else but Ive been impressed with fili moala

he has been getting consistent penetration.. redskins game? he was in the backfield all by himself a couple times

I agree davis

I have been looking forward to this since the draft. I have been one of the guys on here saying Pat will crack the lineup and replace Wheeler. Everyone thought Wheeler was untouchable, but, if you listen to the coaches and BP, you realize Wheeler was/is inconsistent. I heard the whole"Angerer is a rookie" crap, Pat is a gifted athlete, big hitter and ball hawk. I liken his on the field play to a Bob Sanders at LB. I am excited for him and even more for the D.

Wheeler

Wheeler has been completely ineffective imo, I was happy when Hagler came back, cause I thought he was gonna get his job back. Why the trash talk of Session, he has been laying some vicious hits, way better than Wheeler. Angerer should replace wheeler

it’s caldwell that won’t make the adjustment

Session

Vicious hits, but a poor job of wrap-up tackling. Also, he has been overpursuing the play far too often this season.

Two Thumbs Up

This reminds me of 2006 in a way…..the Rob Morris effect.

Dungy finally realized that Gilbert Gardner (cringe) was not getting it done at SAM and moved experienced veteran Morris into the starting lineup. Morris, although not as fast, had a much higher football IQ and was more fundamentally sound as a tackler and with his gap responsibilities. Everyone gives the credit for the 2006 playoff defense to Bob Sanders, and he deserves much of it. But, moving Rob Morris into the lineup and creating some much needed stability at the LB position next to June and Brackett was exactly what that team needed. We all know how that story ended.

I would really like this move because Wheeler, who has all the physical capabilities to be a solid SAM, seems to lack the “it” qualities that the Colts need in a linebacker. Angerer is a better tackler and has already shown his increasing football IQ with limited experience. The only issue is that he is a rookie so there will be a learning curve. But IMO, Wheeler is still going through his own learning curve 2 years later so making this move seems to make too much sense to me.

Please pull the trigger Caldwell!

GREAT recall.

I had pushed everything about Gardner out of my head. BAD memories. I think the learning curve wouldn’t be as bad as expected. Angerer has already played and “led” the defense. I think his football IQ would mask most of that. I would be sad to see him go on ST though. If he were starting he would not be in on much if any ST plays. He has been strong there.

I understand the similarities in terms of the move...

But I hesitate to compare Wheeler to Gardner. You all know how I feel about Wheeler’s weaknesses at strongside, but he’s nowhere near as bad as Gardner was. Wheeler is at least an NFL player. Gardner never should have been.

Not player for player

The comparison was only for the position they played. AND that there is a better option available and the coaches were reluctant to make a move at first but seem to be warming to it.

Polian said it was an option moving forward last night on the Bill Polian show.

Looks like McNair trying to appear "hard" on users.

How many people actually think if he found something he would turn it in to the NFL?
