Moss unlikely, but plausible?

While being interviewed Tuesday, a reporter asked Jim Caldwell if the Colts signing Randy Moss was possible. He refused to rule it out, saying,

"I've just learned to say never say never about anything because you just don't know. Never say never, that's the point I'm making not necessarily from an interest level but whether or not he would ever play for us but whether or not he would ever play for us I think that's often time the question you would ask."

I know that the Colts signing him is less likely than Moss resigning with the Vikings, but I would welcome it. If we sign him with the mentality that we will only let positives occur. Zero tolerance policy. One slip up, one sign he's not happy, we waive him. It makes sense with the way our WR corps is looking.

I doubt it

Only if he plays Special Teams.

Everyone is against this

for whatever dumb reason, but Moss will bring something to this team. Even when he doesn’t try, he still draws double coverage. Guess what that does, folks? It opens someone else up. I would welcome him to this team. If you can’t get motivated playing for possibly the greatest QB ever, then you don’t need to be playing in the NFL. Period. It’s a pipe dream, but if the oppertunity presented itself, the Colts need to jump on it. Moss is a Pro Bowl, Hall of Fame wide receiver. Couple him with Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, and Pierre Garcon, you got yourself a pretty unstoppable monster.

Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!

True

I couldn’t agree more.

And the problem is, he'd start pouting and short-arming and complaining when he draws the double teams and Peyton throws elsewhere.

I’ve always said the answer to “Moss to Indy?” is no, and to me, it’s still “no”. Even if Gonzo is out again, even with Collie out, even with Dallas on IR, and even if Reggie suddenly hurts himself in practice this week. No, and I mean NO.

If he gets signed, I will protest the team. I don’t care what physical abilities he has; his effect on locker room cohesion is too detrimental for the YPC and double-teams Indy would get in return. I mean, look at his tenure with the Vikings!

Forget it. If Indy was on their way to a 1-15 season and had 4 starting UDFA’s at wideout, I’d still say no.

No moss

Randy would be a waste of a roster spot we already have quality receivers. Plus he wouldn’t a good role model for our younger guys to be around.

Role Model?

The Colts are playing with pre-schoolers. I believe our players would be even more aware after the Vikings fiasco that this isn’t a player to follow. A smart player could still learn something though. And if we had a zero policy conduct clause in his contract, we cut him at the hint of any problems.

by farris6659 on Nov 2, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

What makes you think he'd respect a zero-tolerance conduct clause in a contract?

What aspect, what previous element of his behavior makes anyone think he’d suddenly change the way he behaves, just because he’s on the Colts? He didn’t even last with the Patriots, a team every bit as disciplined and Indianapolis, and with a more stern coach to boot.

At any rate, what evidence is there that he’d change his behavior? Hope is not an answer, not in the face of his current established history.

He helped out the young receivers on the Pats, AND the young corners

Say what you want about him on/off the field, but in the locker room he was loved by the team.

Keep the faith!

No Moss

I’d rather see the Colts sign Shawne Merriman. The defense has gotten better, but still needs a little more help.

Moss might help

We are playing with a decimated receiving corps, and now they are saying that Gonzo is banged up again. I would love to see Meriman more though. It is of course all a pipe dream and random speculation. Remember what happened with Ed Johnson.

Merriman

Truth is the Colts most likely will not even try to get either Moss or Merriman. Truth is both would give us at least a slightly better shot at winning the Super Bowl by adding some sound veteran play (not leadership) Truth also is that teams like the Pats and Jets probably will try and get them. I don’t understand why it always seems to be that other teams in our conference can take a little risk, pick up veterans with spotty pasts or who are past their prime and have a slightly better chance of getting the championship… but the Colts… no… no way.. Apparently someone thinks our team’s moral fiber is so fragile you have to be citizen of the year before we will consider picking you up.

No. It would *disrupt* Indianapolis's chances.

And it would do so by adding a toxic and selfish element to team chemistry. And furthermore, as I asked in my post below: What makes people think that his tenure at Indianapolis would be any different? Anyone recall the old saw about leopards never changing their spots?

I'm sort of at a loss as to how Moss would help Indianapolis.

Yes, I’m aware of his physical abilities. What makes you all think he’d use them here? Look at the Vikings record during his short stay there this year: 1-3, with only one game where he led the receivers, three games where he had fewer receptions than a second year guy, and one where he had less receiving yards than the running back. I’ll leave it to Pats fans to say how much he produced there, but Moss is a journeyman for a reason. Stop and think about it: Someone of his abilities is going from team to team, whereas other receivers with less physical skill are dug into their rosters… What does that tell you?

There’s a reason – a good reason – Indy shouldn’t go after Moss. And it’s because he’s earned his cast-off status. A free agent pickup like Jeff Saturday was a hidden gem that Baltimore didn’t realize it had; one like Booger MacFarland was a case of too many people on his previous team, and him being forced out due to age, not team chemistry issues. But a free agent like Moss is nothing more than a vial of poison waiting for some team foolishly thirsty for a receiver to drink him and think “Nah, he can’t hurt us”.

Indianapolis should not go for him. And if they stick to their guns, bravo to them!
