Draft in Review, The 2008 Draft
It takes 3 years to judge a draft, and it's pretty much been 3 years since the 2008 draft. This was a draft LOADED with talented guys, and one we didn't have a 1st round pick for... (Thank you Tony Ugoh), anyway, let's look at our picks.
Mike Pollack, 59, G/C: He was originally drafted to possibly be Saturday's heir, but he kindof fizzled out. He just now got his opportunity to start, and he's been ok, not great at pass blocking, but decent run blocking. Redo pick, Jamaal Charles. Just think how good our run game would be with him, and no Brown because of this, Addai and Charles...
Phillip Wheeler, 93, LB: He's average, bad in pass coverage, and only has 2 or so pass deflections in his carrer, and decent in run, good backup and occasional starter I guess. Redo pick, Tyvon Branch, DB. He's been good in Oakland after a late start, but he has a great nose for the ball and can play saftey or corner, when he's healthy.
Jacob Tamme, 127, TE: He's been great this year after starting his carrer slow, but backing up Clark, who could blame him? Not as big down the field threat, but an absolute great target on 3rd down, you can't get much better value with this pick, redo pick, we pick him again.
Marcus Howard, 161, DE: Interesting pick for Pollian, he's a bit bigger then most DE's we like. A complete bust, cut and out of football I believe. Most famous for having a good game in a meaningless Titans game, both teams put in backups. Redo pick, Jonathan Goff. He's done well as a Giant, late bloomer, but a great leader and good in run D.
Tom Santi, 196, Te: Eh, he was good in Ravens game, but fizzled after that. On IR, probably cut next year. Redo pick, Steve Johnson, He's been great for Buffalo, dropped a game winner, but does my fantasy team proud.
Steve Justice, 201, C: He took over for Saturday when he got hurt, he was ok, but a bad selection, out of football. Redo pick, Peyton Hillis, Charles, Addai, and Hillis, we'd be unstoppable.
Mike Hart, 202, RB: He's done ok, late bloomer and has injury problems, but he's doing ok. Redo pick, Matt Flynn, QB. He's a solid backup in GB, not a lot of good players left, and he is a solid backup and better then the alternative...
Pierre Garcon, 206, WR: What a find, he might be a great starter for years to come, or a deep threat with the dropsies. He's been starting to play consistent, and who knows, if he keeps playing like this he's a pro bowler, no redo pick.
Jamey Richard, 236, C: He's on our PS now, hasn't taken a meaningfull snap, so no idea, probably not good at all. Redo pick, Chris Horton: good saftey, and a good backup, best they have around.
Hindsight is 20-20, but this was an ok draft, we good some good players that might last us 10 years, and some who barely lasted 1.

Good breakdown
Thanks.

Jamey Richard isn't on the PS
He’s even started games for us this season. He’s good back-up material, not a starter though.
Didn't realize that
Never heard he was moved off PS. With the linemen rotation going on, It’s hard to keep track of all of them.
A good draft then
So this draft was about what we’d expect from a solid NFL team. Solid guys in Tamme, Garcon, and Hart. Santi has shown flashes but been held back by injuries, so I don’t count that as a bad pick. Pollack is frustrating because his problem is mental, not physical, in my opinion. I think he can still turn it around.
Out of 9 picks, 7 are still on the team. That’s a good draft. You make connections on about half your picks and its a good draft.
It’s for us to criticize and say in hindsight we should have taken so and so, but judging players is hard. You’ve got to find the right scheme fit and judge if a guy is mentally and physically able to play at the next level. There are only a few people who can do it, and Bill and Chris Polian are among the best. I’m so glad BP and CP are running the front office instead of a guy like Matt Millen.
In Polian we trust!
Not a bad draft in 2008
It seem like the later picks were the best ones in 2008, Garcon and Hart can be classified as steals.
I agree with the Tyvon Branch redo pick, he has great speed but I prefer him as a CB than a Safety, cause he doesn’t have the aggressiveness I like at Safety, but his awareness would make him a star a FS, he’s also a solid tackler.
