Colts Better Off Missing The Playoffs?

With a 500. record at 6-6 the Colts may not make the post season.  The loss today shows this team cannot defeat anyone in playoff contention let alone a team completely out of the playoff race.  This relates to years of holes not being fill on the offensive and defensive lines.  Polian made an issue over picking in the bottom half of the draft every year for the last 12 years, saying it prevents teams from acquiring talent in those skilled positions.  We all know this is BS, we're being feed lines while other teams find high caliber linemen after the 1st round.  His evaluations of linemen has set this team back from winning more Superbowls.  Rodger Saffold, Sebastian Vollmer, and Charlies Brown among others Polian has watched slip by on his draft board.  While others like Tony Ugoh, Anthony Gonzo, and Mike Pollak under preform and cost first and second round selections.  Peyton Manning has hidden so many of this team's deficiencies by carrying this team on his back.  After the jump I'll go over some of the things that got us to where we are today...

Star-divide

In my perspective, most of the issues are correctable by next year, given there will still be football.  Polian will have to convince Jim Irsay he's still the right man for the job.  It doesn't matter what you've done in the past, the NFL's mentality is about  'what have you done for me lately'.  Lovie Smith can tell you this all too well, despite going up against the Colts in Superbowl XLI his job was serious in jeopardy if he didn't turn it around this season.  The Colts coaching staff is not on the same par as the Bears clearly.  But, one thing they did right was spend some money in free agency picking up guys like Julius Peppers.  Polian is going to have to breakdown and realize if they want to continue to dominate the AFC South his outlook on this need to change.  I'm 85 percent sure Jared Gaither will be available this off-season, adding him would be an immediate upgrade to the line.  Considering the Colts only own 6 selections in this years draft, every pick will matter that much more.  Also, a lot people were surprised we didn't go after him before the trade deadline.  The positive side to this is, now they can grab him without losing another draft pick in the process.

Let's face reality, even if some injured players comeback for the final four games, would it be in their best interest to win them?  This is not a Superbowl caliber team even when currently healthy so, getting into the playoffs would only guarantee one thing...  Another year where the team picks in the bottom half of the draft.  It all starts with the coaches and ends with the product put on the field.   If the team manages to lose any more games a coaching change will definitely be in question.  Given high quality names like Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, Leslie Frazier, Jim Harbaugh, and among others will be on speed dial for a vacancy. Take your pick, I'd have any of them heading up my team before Jim Caldwell.  He's providing evidence that you can only ride on the coat-tails of someone else's success for so long.

Without a running game to accompany the passing attack we're going to lay blame to the wrong people who carry the load for us.  Same thing goes for the return game, without the right people blocking, who should care what guy is taking the ball out?  Lastly, the mentality of having a defense that only works with the lead is off, why not have a D that punches people in the mouth?  Defenses always win championships, call me a liar... The 18-1 Patriots would have my back, all the Bucs, Ravens, and Steel Curtain teams would have a beef with you for saying otherwise.  We need that running game from our linemen too, we can stop point fingers at Donald Brown saying he's a bust.  Keep on thinking he's at fault when against the Cowboy's our highest rusher had a grand total of 18 yards.   Manning's career maybe more defined like John Elway's later years, until he had a running game many questioned his ability to win the big one.  What happen the year Peyton won the Superbowl, they could run the ball and the defense showed up.  Even thou Manning had the MVP of the game, he got it purely on a popularity contest.  I don't want people to believe I think Brown is a saint, far from it, but some strength training and openings couldn't hurt to fix his stigma.

I know for every Colts fan out there watching the losses pile-up can be sickening to the stomach.  However, we've been on the top of the mountain for so long that other teams get every opportunity to analyze what to do so they can knock us off.  Playing keep away by eliminating Mathis and Freeney with running the ball away from them and into the Colts smaller linebackers.  And, going max protect with short passing plays works so well against the teams philosophy, I'm shocked the coaches don't get it.  Instead we're force to see the agonizing looks on Manning's face when he has to go back on the field knowing the weight of the world is on his shoulders.

Let's try to gaze into the crystal ball and decide what's best for this team.  A possible one and done in the playoffs or righting the wrongs on this ship that have been occurring from year to year.  Drop the overhead in Bob Sander, Kelvin Hayden, and Ryan Diem for suitors willing to give them a go for a late draft pick.  Pay someone in free agency to come in here that knows how to play.  Finally, use what's left of the current draft picks and trades (for picks/players) to show proof the formula you (Polian) have been using can lead us back to the promise land.

tl;dr

But to answer the question in the title: no.

Well, its easy to say "no" when you don't bother with reasoning.

How about thinking about the team long term vs. the here and now. Maybe you would have been one of the people on the Titanic thinking there’s no way the ship actual sinks too. Sometimes teams need a down year to obtain the caliber of player that’s not there in the 20-32 range of the draft.

Lets not get into the playoffs and embarass ourself more or see 4 more INTs

Lets get a good draft position and make a push for the Indy SB. This team needs talent to be good again.

At this point all I want is for Bob to come back, play a couple games and stay healthy.

by BlueKrew on Dec 6, 2010 1:50 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Can he play offensive line too when he gets back?

I love to see Bobzilla out there for the D. But, I doubt he’ll be back this week being a Thursday game. Maybe against the Jags? The team’s struggles seem to stem from no running game, until they fix that the Colts will be in trouble. That’s unless the D can generate 14 point a game off turnovers.

A well articulated and insightful analysis Dann.

Heres How I'm Viewing Things

Clearly we aren’t healthy. Its obvious. We are struggling tremendously and I find it hard this year that we will beat anybody playoff wise. I think we should just miss the playoffs, get a nice draft pick, get healthy, and come back swinging next year. Not to mention get the super bowl hangover off of our chests.

Everyone keeps forgetting

That Collie, Session, Hayden, Sanders, and Addai (the most important piece) have been out for most of these losses. Holy sh!t, if we remembered that jumping over the offensive line on a field goal was a penalty and we won the game, would everyone still be calling for us to tank the rest of the season to move up four spots in the draft?!

Good write-up

But I do respectfully disagree with the title of the article; how many times have we seen teams get hot at the end of a season, sneak into the playoffs and go deep in the playoffs or even win a superbowl over the past few years? Steelers did it, Giants did it, and heck, the Jets were let into the playoffs last year, and were basically a half a way from playing in the SB. All 3 of these teams won games on the road that people thought they had no business winning initially; Steelers beating us in Indy, Giants beating the Packers on the road and the Jets beating the Chargers in SD last year….we gotta put a winning streak together now and keep in mind that the playoffs came a tad bit earlier this season…it start now!

We will hopefully start getting some guys back and if we can win until Addai and Collie get back, I really think we might be alright…always a believer.

Keep in mind, there is no guarantee of a season next year anyways, so lets enjoy the here and now cuz 2011 could be a really long year…

OK

Lets be realistic, Addai and Collie are no saviours. I don’t even think they start on most other teams. This team isn’t going to suddenly catch fire and beat the likes of Ravens, Steelers, Pats, Jets etc…..in the playoffs. There are serious problems schematically and with personnel that will only be fixed with an aggressive off season. To answer the question, yes they will be better off missing the playoffs. To go a step further, I hope they lose the rest of games….I really think a high draft pick will produce either a top flight LT or DT. Either way would go a long ways towards helping out one side of the ball. If Ted Ginn is available, sign him with the quickness to return kicks/punts. If not, draft a KR/PR in the 3rd round. Trade a 4th round pick for Albert Haynesworth…..If Seymour is a free agent, get him too. Trade Sanders, for a little cap relief. Brackett can go too (small and slow). Let Angerer take over and hope Hagler or someone else can step up opposite Sessions. Secondary should be OK with Bullitt,Bethea,Tryon, Hayden,Powers, Thomas, Lacey…….1st order of business though should be giving Francisco his walking papers!!!!…Like yesterday!!!!!!

You seriously want Haynesworth?

This isn’t the Haynesworth that forces pressure up the middle anymore, this is the one that lies on the ground while Mike Vick runs back and forth in front of him.

How much of his $100 Million salary would need to be covered by the Colts?
Would Washington trade Haynesworth for a 4th, or try and get something out of him in Virginia? Trades need to make sense to both teams.

If more Colts fans want Haynesworth on the floor of the Lucas Oil Dome, then you guys are truly panicking.

Would you give a man a foot massage?

by insertscreenname on Dec 6, 2010 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

How do you expect to pay for Seymour and Haynesworth?

And for f*ck’s sake, it’s Session. How do you people claim to be Colts fans when you can’t even get the players’ names correct?

Also, have you looked at next year’s draft class? Even by tanking, finishing 6-10, and getting a pick in the 10-14 range, which tackle is worth such a spot? Most recent mock drafts don’t put any o-lineman until the early 20s anyway, and the very few elite DTs will likely be snatched up in the first 8-10 picks anyway. Do you really think this team is going to trade up for these guys?

You play to win the game.

by strootster on Dec 6, 2010 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

What?

Addai and Collie couldn’t start on another team?….if the Colts would let either of these 2 guys go, they would be signed quicker than you can say “I hope they lose the rest of games”. Are ya kididng me? Collie is the most sure handed receiver we have…yes, out of every receiver on the Colts roster, I put my faith in Collie to make a catch over anyone else. He has never had games like Wayne vs. the Chargers and Garon vs. almost every opponent for the past 2 years. Collie is smart, quick and sure-handed. He puts in endless time with Peyton and is usually on the exact same page as him. Addai is a fantastic all purpose back…you forget that when the Colts had a decent run blocking O-line, Addai and Rhodes carried this team in the Superbowl vs. an extremely incredible Bears defense…you make a bold statement saying that these guys couldn’t start on other teams.

Second, how the hell could you “hope” the Colts lose the rest of the games…what kind of fan are you? You are telling me that you would rather the Colts season end on January 2nd instead of having the opportunity to watch them in the playoffs just to start planning for next year? It takes 1 game to turn this ship around and put a win streak together…we lost to an elite New England team by 3 measly points on the road (and frankly, were in a great opportunity to win that game…trust me, even Pats fans thought it was over…I live in Boston)…so you saying we can’t hang with the elite teams is ridiculous.

Don't spend to much time looking over mock drafts

If you honestly believe these websites know who is going to be available come April your in for a rather big shock. That’s the whole reason the word “mock” is there, they can only determine the seniors. Once the combine comes, the draft order is shuffled to the point someone right now considered a 1st ends up a 2nd or 3rd. Look at Jimmy Clausen or Bruce Campbell for guys who’s stock was high and nobody was buying it.

I don’t want to see the Colts tank this season, but the people running the show don’t know what their doing. I think if Jim Caldwell were to show some signs of life, it would merely be to let his jaw hit the floor. I’ve loss all faith in Caldwell… in Peyton I trust. Unfortunately, he’s not playing at the MVP caliber that he had earlier this season. Maybe its time to call Bob Vila and fix this old house, cause the frame holding it up isn’t that strong anymore.

Never

worse teams than the 2010 Indianapolis Colts have made the Super Bowl, and recently (2007 Giants, 2008 Cardinals). Never give up a chance to win a 4-game season. I doubt this team suddenly finishes 6-10. They are losing about 5-8 spots by losing in the Wild Card round instead of missing the playoffs.
