a joke?
Collin, it is unfair to call the front office a joke. In the real world, a decision-maker uses available information to make the best possible decision. When the information is very imperfect, some you get right and some wrong. Perhaps IR-ing Gonzo was a mistake…..but they had to decide something. How could they know he would or would not come back? They held out hope that Bobzilla would make it back. If we made the playoffs, he would be invaluable. Odds are Bob got bad news from Dr. Andrews—and the decision is now is clear…to IR him and get somebody else rolling.
This is a bad-luck season. Deal with it. Doesn’t make them dumb because their medical crystal ball wasn’t working.

They put all their chips down on Bob.
And lost. That is terrible roster management. Either they botched this call medically just as they botched the Lilja call medically, or they botched it in terms of roster management when Gonzo and possibly Bullitt (per JMV interview) could have returned prior to the postseason.
Or Joique Bell/Jaimie Thomas are more importance roster pieces than Gonzo, Bullitt or Sanders. I mean, your call folks. This is bad roster management whether you want to admit it or not.

Nothing anywhere says he couldn't have come back
they made this move because of injuries elsewhere. With Powers going down the Colts NEEDED the spot for a DB. When you have a shit ton of injuries, you have to make decisions.

Exactly.
So you cut Joique Bell, who will play zero snaps tomorrow, or Jaimie Thomas, who can’t even get second-string snaps for the NFL’s worst OL. And then you sign the CB with that guy’s spot. And re-sign that guy when you no longer need the CB.
But you don’t, after waiting this long, bail on Bob’s return. Not if he is indeed on pace to return.

you keep refering to cutting Thomas and Bell
Jamie Thomas by my count is the 3rd OL backup. The colts need to carry at least 8 total OL, so Thomas would be number 8. Many teams in the NFL carry 9, but as far as I know they all carry at least 8.
If its not Jamie Thomas then it has to be some other OL so that doesn’t help with the secondary.
It is easy to call Bell the 6th string running back, but it is not like we have a ton of healthy bodies at the RB position. Addai is hurt. Hart is hurt again. Brown still may not be a 100%. I don’t know that the Colts will throw Rhodes out there much tonight on only 2 days practice this season.
Right now the Colts are carrying 4 healthy running backs and that is with the assumption that Brown has ever been healthy this season and that Rhodes is ready to go tonight. (Rhodes is listed on the Colts website roster, but not on the website depth chart) Again, the Colts are carrying the minimum number at a position basically.
Just saying cut this player that doesn’t play is an easy thing to do, but doesn’t make it feasible. Painter is never going to take any snaps this week so lets cut him as well to make room for the new DB instead by the terms of your argument.

So IR Hart.
Or even IRing Session is better, than IRing Sanders, if he is about to return. If he isn’t, the team should just say so.
I don't disagree with you Ty46.
I was only talking about the 2 players Collin pointed to multiple times in this thread.
Everyone over the past 2 season has been yelling on this site to let Sanders go because he cant stay healthy. Let Gonzo go because he can’t stay healthy.
Well Hart hasn’t stayed healthy at all either. I think Session has a good shot at being back, but that is just a guess(I’m not going to pretend to be a M.D. or an expert on his injury situation like everyone else on this site thinks they are) so I would IR him at this point.
This debate I think is the problem with the Colts right now. I don’t think Caldwell is a great coach, but he isn’t as bad as everyone is calling him either. The Colts have at least 16 players on IR already this season. That is absurdly high number. The Colts could easily have another 2 or 3 players join that list.
That is a ton of season ending injuries, with many at key positions, for any team, QB, or coach to overcome.

I think it's more of a reflection on
how we need talent right now to help us get in to the playoffs and we should not be focused on the potential to have a player some time down the line.

With this news.....
I can’t see how the Colts can justify keeping Bob next year. He’s just too expensive to continue to gamble on whether or not he can stay healthy.
While the gamble has backfired, I can understand the Colts decision to keep a roster spot open for him. He has far more [potential] upside at his position than either Gonzo or Bullit (Gonzo was competing in a deep receiving corps and Sanders will always be ahead of Melv if both are fit).
Such a shame for someone with Hall of Fame calibre talent.
I wouldn't say a "joke"
But this individual case certainly has been mismanaged.

I mean Teebus dude. Take a minute to breathe and calm the hell down. Injuries is the reason this team is where it is, not because of how its been managed. When you have this many injuries, you can only do so much.

Hey, come now
I hear about Lilja ALLLL the time living in Missouri. I’m in Chiefs territory.
Ya, cutting Lilja is something that has hurt us, but we can’t do anything about it now. To stay on topic, this SEASON cannot be defined by a singular cut, or a singular mismanagement of a roster spot. As a whole, injuries and an O-Line that is simply performing poorly is the story, not any singular event. Tee mismanagement of this in particular case is apparent, but that does not make the front office a “joke.”
Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.
Not sure I follow your logic...
so because there are multiple issues related to the front office’s ineptness, they get a pass on this one?
I’m with Collin. IR’ing Bob now after hes played one quarter all season is a joke. Cutting Lilja was a joke. Having an O-Line that is unquestionably worse than last year’s “Super Bowl-losing squad” is a joke.
No, you can’t blame the injuries on the front office. Sort of. The way they’ve handled “the injured” is certainly a joke. Why the hell was Collie playing against the Patriots when he clearly wasn’t ready? How many more games without him did that cost us?
I agree with you on one thing – there is not singular, defining event that shows the front office’s incompetence. It’s when you take all of this as a whole that you see a pattern that isn’t too pretty.
Collin – I’m with you all the way.

Seems like a lot of this fanbase
prefers to look at Colts management through rose-colored glasses. It’s like the name Polian has some mystical kind of magic to it. If he screws up, don’t be afraid to say it! If Caldwell screws up, don’t be afraid to say that either. Both of them screwed up last year in a colossal way by pulling the plug on the freight train that was the 14-0 Colts, denying them a shot at getting in the history books as the greatest of all time. As we can see, it’s not always easy to get another crack at that kind of achievement. Extremely short-sighted.
Am I the only that don’t see this as related to Sanders health (I mean, he is injured, but this may not be related to a setback in his recovery)? I think this is more a reflex of Hayden and Powers being out for tomorrow…
Then cut Joique Bell or Jaimie Thomas for a week...
Somehow I don’t see a run on the sixth-string RB or third-string OL anytime soon.

A joke? Hardly.
Why not put those objective reporting skills to good use and tell us about our new DB…or would that take too much time from your knee-jerk editorializing?

Even a 50% free throw shooter makes half of his free throws...
that doesn’t mean he’s a very good free throw shooter.
Look at all the other GMs out there that have found supreme talent with castoffs. The difference is they don’t have Peyton Manning to hide their bad choices. It’s funny what’s happening when Peyton’s not on top of his game. Looks like that age old statement that “the Colts without Peyton Manning would be a 3-13 team” holds water.
Note to Polian… you’re only allowed to be a crusty old man when the team’s winning.
by SoCalHoosier on Dec 8, 2010 11:09 PM EST up reply actions
I'd say its the other way around
Peyton usually looks like the greatest QB of all time when he has a bunch of great players at the other offensive skill positions. Make him play with Reggie Wayne & a bunch of 2nd & 3rd stringers and he’s not unbeatable any more.
Though they probably would be lucky to go 3-13 starting the other QB on the roster. But replace Peyton with an average NFL starting QB and I think we contend for the playoffs with a more normal injury situation.
by ex-Viking fan on Dec 8, 2010 11:37 PM EST up reply actions
I think you give
the coaching staff, the offensive line, and the defense way too much credit, if you think the Colts are a playoff team with an “average” NFL quarterback, unless we have widely varying perceptions on what qualifies as “average”

Replace Peyton with an average QB and we contend for the playoffs???
Are you interested in buying any real estate in Las Vegas or Florida?
Yeah, that guy is totally unrealistic.
My feeling is if you give Peyton even a MEDIOCRE supporting cast, the Colts will dominate all the time. Trouble is, the players around Peyton, for the most part, are not even mediocre at this point. I blame injuries, and definitely blame Polian.
There is only one thing that Manning needs to succeed...
an offensive line that can protect him. (ask any retired QB what they’d like the most)
You can make him play with a bunch of shlepps and he’ll still give you a chance as long as you have a line that can protect him. His failures this year stem from the fact that his line is the worst it’s ever been. Sure some extra skill guys would be helpful but they can’t take away the fear in the back of his head that he’s about to be hit.
by SoCalHoosier on Dec 9, 2010 2:10 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
I'm talking the Colts' starters, not 3rd stringers
Notice I said “with a more normal injury situation.” I think most NFL QBs would look pretty good throwing to a receiving corp that included Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, and Austin Collie with Garcon, Tamme & White as fourth options. And the starting defense is pretty good. In fact, many of the 2nd stringers are pretty good. But we’re at our third option or beyond at multiple positions, and there’s a limit to how much depth a team can accumulate with NFL roster limitations.
And last year’s team had similar struggles, they just came up with the key plays to win games they really shouldn’t have.
One major unique talent Manning has is the ability to get by with a weak O-line. If he has several excellent receiving targets he needs very little time. But with Clark and Collie out, the defense can double Wayne and have a decent chance of covering the other guys until the pass rush gets to Manning. So we probably aren’t built to survive with an average QB, or even an excellent one with different skills. But I think the overall talent level is at least average even without Manning.

With those guys we are 6 and 6 and falling.
Please don’t tell me we went to the Super Bowl , that was last year.
Conceding
Sounds like we are conceding this season. A lot of chatter about Manning wanting out of Indy too, although I don’t buy that.

I guess I am not seeing what the big deal is…If anything they mishandled the Addai and Collie situation. It is a crap shoot… they took a chance with Sanders and Gonzo and it did not work out. I knew in training camp Gonzo would not make it (got ripped for saying it) He did not look sharp at all or all that healthy. Sanders looked good and was hitting hard but I said to a friend “Watch he wont make it 5 mins in the first game”.
Everyone knew when he was injured there was no chance in hell he would come back or if he did he would be worth a crap. Face it this season has been an avalanche of bad news. I said in preseason training camp this team would be lucky to be a 8-8 of 9-7 (got ripped for saying it). It is noticeable how less sharp practice is now compared to even the Dungy years. The decline in discipline I suppose starts there and translates to the next 16 games. That is on Caldwell and the coaching staff.
In terms of recent bad moves and bad luck for this team I do not think this is major. He is gone anyhow and the team is in no way a Super Bowl team this year. But as a poster above said “The Powers move forced this move”.
Who knew Donald Brown would go from looking pretty good in his first four games and having some explosion to looking like one of the worst running backs I have ever seen -post injury. I hope Rhodes at least plays with some hunger now and has at least some explosion left
Who knew Moala would look one of the best defensive players at times and Brackett would be terrible.
I thought the Collie injury hurt the Colts the most. He obviously was not ready in the NE game. That was a desperation move. I was there.. he came off the field after his first reception. For as slow as he is he has the most uncanny ability to get open and usually open by a lot.
What concerns me is how soft the team is… We get pushed around by San Diego on both sides of the ball and Oakland pushed around the Chargers badly last week. That Raider game concerns me more than the other 3. I can see McFadden being a big problem for this defense. He is smallish and quick and pretty powerful. The other would be Jacoby Ford (speed 4.26 40) in the return game and being able to get behind our defense in the passing game.
People say “well if x, y or z did not happen the Colts would be 10-2 or 9-3” but the thing is x, y and z did happen and 6-6 is where we are at. Keeping that roster spot hoping for him to return is not as serious an error as many others have been lately.
What scares the hell out of me
is that we just promoted a player who’s last name rhymes with “tender”….
"I’m very fast. I’m like Forest Gump except... I am not an idiot." - Michael Scott
Tiresome, shrill, and irrational. Is this Stampede Blue or the nattering nabobs of negativity?
A high-impact player doesn’t heal as well as was hoped, so the Colts do the proper thing and put him on IR. I see no incompetence, only moronic fans crying in their beer.
Look at the facts: Despite the horror of the injuries this year, there have be EXACTLY TWO games we had no “healthy scratches,” Cincy and Philly (one of which we won). This means that, of the allotted 8 inactives, only twice did we have to use them all. Since we won vs Cincy, there was only one game in which Bob’s roster spot could have made a whit difference. And i do mean just a whit, because you have to assume that any player they bring in is only going to be the 62nd best man available (in their eyes, and they do the choosing), after the 53 and 8 practice squad guys they already have access to. Did the missing 62nd man lose the Philly game? Hell no. Did we miss out on developing a 62nd man these past 10 weeks or so? Maybe. Was it worth the gamble of getting back a guy potentially in the top 5 to 8 for your team? Hell yeah.

I want to thank the Stampede for this, my first Greening.
Wow. I don’t know what to say. I never expected this honor. Ya know, (sniff) you comment hard your whole career (or at least since August), and you put out some good ideas, ya know, that you think are really good, but maybe the public doesn’t think so (sniff).
Like my early comment about the existence of funhouse mirrors at a carnival in Iowa and a fortuneteller’s in New Orleans in which Dallas and Peyton would look like normal fellows, respectively. Later on you realize you’re a character actor, try to focus on technique and grammar, try to do some serious dramatic pieces (On Complexity, the Colts Chronicle spreadsheet, etc.) And then you make a comment that just fits the Zeitgeist, ya know, and it takes off.
Well, there are so many people to thank. There’s brown11b, of course; BBS who has yet to ban me; the many writers and herd members who tolerate wit (Music Begins); my mom, who taught me how to read; the Polians; Mr. Irsay; (Hook Appears); SB Nation; the color green; Toshiba; all the lurkers….

Listen
I am as much a Colts fan as anyone else on here but I think a lot of people are refusing to come to grips with a few realities—(1) Yes Peyton is having a bad stretch, but he is starting to decline and probably has 4-5yrs MAX left to play….offense never changes so it es easy for other teams to game plan w/o running game. I’ve looked at a lot of his outside throws and there is absolutely no zip on those balls. His arm has never been the strongest, and I think now it is catching up to him. (2) Front office is a joke, they’ve made dumb move after dumb move over the last 2-3yrs. Call it ego, bad luck whatever. The Colts really needed a KR and CB. With AOA (drafted by the Cowboys) available, what do the Colts do? They draft Thomas. AOA was known for being a good returner and at least as good if not better than thomas as a CB. He brought more size AND more speed. Keeping Painter is dumb, don’t care what anyone says, he stinks. Same thing with Francisco….I think almost anyone else would be better, I mean dude runs like a 4.8…playing safety!!! That is like putting Eric Foster at safety!!!!! (3) Caldwell is a terrible coach and needs to go. Offense needs some creativity in plays/play calling and a dynamic runner. Defense needs Fat Albert and one shut down corner!….I’m not even going to say anything about the O Line…that is a given……………………
BTW
Put Pender in there and lets see what he can do. He is a big guy with speed, might need him to run down Chris Johnson!!!
glad someone else thinks pender should get a chance before we call him worthless
everyone assumes he is horrible. he probably is, but he at least needs a chance to prove that he is horrible in the nfl.
