Freeney's Backup: Actually Exists, and is pretty good

I was awfully worried this morning when I woke up and read that Freeney was questionable for the game. More reading didn't help; let's be honest, the medical diagnosis isn't good. Freeney probably isn't going to play, and if he does, he won't be amazing, given the particulars of his injury.

Then the panic really set in. Without Freeney, we're screwed! We dont have any depth at that position! Freeney's backup is a statue! A mannequin in speed blue! A lump of clay with a horseshoe on it!

Oh...wait....no, we actually have a serviceable backup, in the form of...........(check it after the jump)

Oh yeah! Raheem Brock is his backup, NOT Josh Thomas! NOT a statue!

I'm not saying that we're out of the woods, nor am I saying that Freeney's injury isn't going to make this game harder. But Raheem Brock is a quality DE, let's not forget that. And don't think he hasn't been waiting on a chance to show off his skills on the biggest stage possible.

Brock is a tested guy. Quality. Let's not forget that.

Brock is nice yet it is undisputed that...

Freeney is better. Brock is a good rotational player, and a better backup than any team has at the end position. Colts D shouldn’t be losing too much if they decide that Freeney cannot play at gametime. I’m sure the Colts D will handle Brees fine. I don’t think we have to stress out too much

eff you we winning anyway

ESPN ( Schlereth ) actually discussed today what a change from Freeney to
Brock would do to the Saint’s ‘secret weapon’ ( the screen play ). Brock staying
in his gap would potentially ‘blow up’ the screen. On the down side, I don’t
think Brock would command any double-teams, making things more difficult
for Mathis. This puts extra importance on getting Powers healthy. I want Lacey
as the nickel, NOT #23! There remains the possibility that we may see
Freeney on 3rd downs only, but I’d be surprised if he plays.

Aren't we 9-2 without Freeney?

I really don’t think that’s gonna be the major problem. Ok, Brock won’t force any double teams, and Mathis doesn’t handle those with the same ease as Freeney. But he’s smoking hot those few last games, and he’s pretty, pretty fast. Of course we’ll face a major down on DT with Brock going to DE, but if Freeney is really that hurt and will not likely play at a high level by rust, everybody rather go with Brock than Freeney.

Brock has looked really, really good recently

Blowing up plays, getting to the QB, steamrolling Sanchez on that TD pass that had no business being completed…he’s a real sleeper. But man, Freeney, we’ve gotta have you.

I'm actually more concerned about the back-end on D

Other than Hayden, not one of the other CBs have played in the SuperBowl. Two rookies, and Jennings was on IR in ’06. Throw in Powers playing hurt and possibly less of a rush…. OK its going to be a shootout!

Hayden wasn't even a starter until last SB.

They’ll grow up on the field.

I deserve a Super Bowl because karma knows that I've suffered enough and that it is my fate and that I'm due on the 7th of February. I'm indeed naming him Lombardi.

The more the people

think it’ll be a shootout, the more I’ll expect 20-13 or 24-17

I see 28 -24

That's in between

the shootout and defensive battle – I’d be happier with 28-17, less stress during game

Yes.

Less stress = good.
