Let's Talk Draft
I know that we are all suffering. But, there is no better way to put this behind us than talking about the draft. I want to hear what the actual Colt fans think we will do. Do we get that LB or do we go for the SS to start learning from Bob. How about an LT so Peyton can feel a little more comfortable and we can move Charlie to a place he can help the most. Hey, this is for you guys out there. I have no clue. Plus I've been drinking heavily and taking mood levelers ever since the loss on Sunday. I'm hoping this might help take my mind off of the......... I can't even type it, but you know what I'm talking about. GO COLTS.

Start with the O line
then get a KR/PR
after that I dont care.
Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!
Maybe some blocking to go with the returner.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Even though the Colts lost, it was a good season. Random facts will resume next week when I recover.
How does it usually work?
Don’t most teams just draft the best players that meet their needs on Off and Def, let them compete for starting jobs, and play the backups on ST?
Is it really that simple? Help me understand, dude.
Careful what you wish for... a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take everything you have.
Basically.

That's how it works for the Colts at least
I think other teams may have more focus on drafting ST players, but I could be wrong (I often am).

Offseason...
Here is how I see it going: (I am assuming no CBA)
UFA Brackett will be resigned. ($4.8 million/year)
RFA Charlie Johnson will be signed to a 1st round tender. ($2.2 million)
RFA Bethea will be resigned long term. ($3.5 million.) Tender would be 1st and 3rd.
RFAs: Hagler, Bullitt, Muir, A. Johnson will be resigned but not a qualifying offer.
FAs: Jackson, Baskett, Jennings, Keiaho, Federkeil, Rushing, Francisco, Stover will not be resigned. (Maybe Rushing if they can’t find a KR.)
That leaves biggest needs as two OL, depth at CB, SS, KR, DT, ROLB depth.
Draft:
Rd1. Maurkic Pouncey C/OG Florida.
I would love to get Charles Brown OT USC in order to move Johnson inside, but I don’t think he falls that far. Pouncey is probably not quite a 1st rounder, but very versatile and we are desperate on the O-line. Hopefully Pouncey will be the player Pollack was supposed to. Starting RG and eventual replacement for Saturday.
Rd2. Kyle Calloway OT Iowa.
Calloway is strictly a road grader RT. I have been a big Ryan Diem supporter for a long time, but it’s time to put that horse out to pasture. He was a liability last year.
Rd3. Larry Asante SS Nebraska.
Really want a CB here like Javier Arenas or Kyle Wilson, but I think they come off the board a little before this. Asante should push Bullitt for playing time and provide good depth at Safety.
Rd4. Syd’Quan Thompson CB California
I think Thompson falls a bit because of a slow 40 time. Should be fine in our zone coverage scheme and we need a CB with Jennings and Jackson both leaving.
Rd5. Rico McCoy LB Tennessee
He’s not a SAM and may never see the field as a starter. He’s fast and undersized like we like. Could be a special teams ace if nothing else.
Rd7. Brandon James KR Florida
This late, maybe it’s time to take a flier on a kickoff guy. See what he can do.
I am mixed on Syd'Quan
Obviously I love him as a Cal Bear, but he showed some dropoff after his junior year. He was so hot as a junior, that he was targeted much less as a senior. But when he WAS targeted, he wasn’t as effective as he had been.
I remember booing the SHIT out of him when he was a sophomore (gawd he was awful!), but then he became shutdown as a junior, but leveled off a bit last year. Soooo… if the issue is technique, which can be taught, great. But otherwise, not so sure.
How can you not love a team that does this?
Yeah...
I’m a little ambivalent on him as well, but in the 4th round he might be the best option available. Like I said, I would really love to have a decent CB fall to us in the 3rd, but I think we may miss out.

Muir is a ERFA
So he will be re-signed and I think Mookie is as well.
Syd’Quan Thompson sounds exactly like a Cal Bear we just cut this training camp.

no tender on Bullitt?
I think someone would grab him in a flash. I’d be putting at least the 2nd round tender on him.

Bullitt's tender...
I could be wrong on how this works, but since he was an UDFA the minimum tender amount ($1.1 million) does not apply to him. I was therefore assuming that the lowest qualifying offer would be a 2nd round tender at $1.545 million. Bullitt is a solid role player, but not an elite talent. I could see them stretching to $1.1 million but not $1.5. Given the other big contracts coming up this year I was expecting something more along the lines of $800,000 for Bullitt.
by invisibulman on Feb 11, 2010 8:07 AM EST up reply actions
they can put the minimum tender on him, but then there's no draft compensation.
all it does is offer the 1 year deal and give them the right to match an offer sheet

that's what the did with Utecht
he was UDFA, they low tendered him, then declined to match the Bengals offer.

That might be the way they go, but I don’t know that they would raise their offer (same as they did with Utecht.) Sort of a moot point at that juncture since there is no draft pick at stake.

KR
as far as the punt returner we signed the future contract of RB Devin Moore already. They clocked him the week before the super bowl and is the 2nd fastest on the team. He lacks size but has good hands and speed. Check him out on youtube devin moore -wyoming
my ideas
I would love to get a LT like Charles Brown or Trent Williams in Round 1. I’m not sure if we would have to get him in round 2 or 3 but I’m salavating over Javier Arenas. He would fir so many of out needs, from return guy, to special teams gunner, to nickle or dime back in passing situations. I would also really like a situational passrusher at some point in this draft
by Colts Live Free or Die! on Feb 10, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions
Williams is a RT only in my opinion. Still a solid player, but not as versitile. I think we would have to burn a 2nd rounder on Arenas and I’m just not convinced his cover skills justify it. His KR skills are unquestioned, but I don’t know that is enough to make him a 2nd rounder.

My Opinion...and style-biting invisibulman...
Round 1-Trade down if we can’t get Charles Brown (OT USC). Or trade up to get Bruce Campbell (OT Maryland). We should go into round two with either Campbell or more picks. I like Pouncey too, but we could get more value with another 2nd rounder.
Round 2-Perrish Cox, CB Oklahoma State. He’d fix CB depth and he’s a good return guy. Two birds, one stone. Plus he’s bigger than most of our CBs to deal with those pesky Vincent Jacksons, Marques Colstons and Randy Mosses of the league. If we have another 2nd rounder from a trade out of the first round, take Rob Gronkowski (TE Arizona).
Round 3-Austen Lane, DE Murray State. Yeah, he’s huge (6’7 270), and I know we don’t like ‘em too big, but damn…he’s a helluva pass rusher. He’ll get attention at the combine may not be available here. If Jason Fox is available (LT Miami) you can’t pass him up, even considering the injury questions. The only other guy I like in this range is Daryl Washington (ILB, TCU) but he probably won’t be available either. Trade down?
Round 4-Myron Rolle, S Florida State. We really need a Silva upgrade, and Rolle is a beast. Again, he’s probably a little too big, physical and perhaps slow for our system, but you can’t say he’s not smart (he’s literally a Rhodes Scholar). The other guy I like here is Ed Wang (OT Virginia Tech), but only if we couldn’t secure a tackle earlier.
Round 5-Joe Pawelek, ILB Baylor. With no cap, the Colts should long-term Brackett, but if they franchise him, Pawelek is the only other rookie LB I see the Colts drafting who could replace him soon (besides Washington). He’s got a similar skill-set to Washington, and is not a huge step down, talent-wise, but he’ll be available a lot later. If they draft Washington instead of a pass rusher in the 3rd, I’d like to see a pass rusher here, like George Selvie (DE South Florida).
Round 7-Either another CB to fill out the roster, a DT or a kicker (I think they’ll cut Vinatieri). The CBs are deep this year. Sherrick McMannus out of Northwestern (they like Big Ten D-backs) could be available, and he’s big and can cover a little. There will be no shortage of undersized, fast DTs, like Randy Earl from Minn St.-Mankato. Small school, but he could play all along the D-line in our weird system.
"You're hitting the wrong person. Don't you know you're hitting Ron Artest?"
I like this draft
Kind of feel that the LTs will be gone by 31, but Brown would be the lone possibility. Fox potentially in round two. Of course value now is different from value in mid-April. My gut feeling is that DE is going to be a higher priority than is being discussed, and 2nd TE is another position that I would like upgraded. IMO trading down in this draft would net the Colts a lot of their type players in the midrounds. This draft is loaded with tweeener DE/OLBs who are very comparable. There are some 3 Technique system types who could be had there as well. Geno Atkins, D’Anthony Smith, Earl Mitchell to name a few.
Love the idea of Rolle
When I saw his story about being a Rhodes scholar, my first thought was that he was a Colt
How can you not love a team that does this?
Love Pawelek...
Almost went with him instead of McCoy. Probably should have, but downgraded it a bit assuming we re-sign Brackett.
Big fan of Perrish Cox as well, but I wanted 2 OL in the first two rounds and Cox wouldn’t have lasted until round 3 for me. You might be right though… take the DB earlier and wait on another OL.
My gut tells me someone is going to jump on Myron Rolle before we get a crack at him.
GonzoBlue threw out Geno Atkins’s name who is another guy I like. Unfortunately(?) He tore up the Senior Bowl and now looks like a 2nd round pick. Too soon for us to look DT IMO.
I don’t see drafting a kicker but i bet we’ll have an extra one in camp this year. (Think this may be the last we see if Vinny) I was hoping Kai Forbath would come out this year, but he’s back to school. I’m not impressed with the other kickers.

Great draft
I don’t know much about Pawelek, but I love Brown, Cox, Lane, and Rolle. All would be great picks. I hope Rolle is still there in the 4th round.
And I agree that the Colts should trade down if Brown is gone unless I think if Brandon Graham is left. I would take him in a heartbeat and hope for Jason Fox on the third day.
Sak vide pa kanpe
I really like Graham
And I bet he’s still there. If anyone’s going to take him I think it’s Arizona, and that may mean Brown is still available because they passed on him :)
Too early to tell. There’s a lot of pre-draft hype and combine stuff to go through. But the thing with Graham is you have to hope he can find a niche on the team. He’s really a rush linebacker, but he’s bigger than Robert Mathis, so you’d think he could spell either Freeney or Mathis in case of injury…but that’s it. The Colts would still probably want Brock in the rotation as an end on 40-50% of the plays. Where does that leave Graham? While I think he could be the next Freeney, or at least a poor man’s Freeney, and I definitely think he’s a first round pick, is he a first round pick for THIS team given the needs? Regretfully, as much as I like him, and as much as I like the idea of drafting another top-notch pass rusher, I’d say you have to look at O-line if a good tackle’s available.
"You're hitting the wrong person. Don't you know you're hitting Ron Artest?"
3rd Day...
wow i forgot its 3 days now instead of 2….could lead to more trades than usual.

Few of my favs
-Charles Brown is an absolute perfect fit for the Colts O-Line. He’s a ZBS kinda guy and is extremely athletic, which should allow him to get outside for stretch plays and move to the next level to extend runs. He’s a great pass protector and pretty good run blocker. The only knock on him is his weight, which hovers around 300. If he bulks up another 10 or 15 pounds, he could become something special. He’s my pick for the Colts at 31.
-I was one of the bigger Philip Wheeler sympathizers during the season, but I just haven’t seen enough out of him to think that he can take the job next season. So I’m hoping the Colts have a shot at TCU’s Daryl Washington in the second round. He’s more of a WILL in our system, but he’s athletic enough to play either side. He’s a tackling machine and usually doesn’t let anything get by him, and the speed and range are all there. Possibly could even switch to the middle down the road.
-If Washington isn’t there in round 2, then maybe S Nate Allen is. He’s a great ball hawker and has the size and tackling-ability to play either SS or FS. Our safety depth is non-existent beyond Bullitt, so I’d love for the team to take a one early and secure the position.
Washington
The m-o on Washington is that he’s great in coverage, has good instincts, is a little undersized, and plays best when he gets to roam free. That doesn’t sound like a WOLB to me. It sounds like a young Gary Brackett! If the Colts take Washington it means they’re replacing Brackett; maybe not this year, but next year at the soonest.

Guys I'd like to see us draft
In no particular order:
Golden Tate - return man, You get the best of both Reggie Bush and Percy Harvin here, and he could be used as a receiver on certain downs as well.
Toby Gerhart - love Mike Hart, but we need a bulldozer type back for short yardage situations. Addai, Brown, and Gerhart would be the ultimate triple threat backfield. A lot, and I mean a LOT, of pressure will be taken off Manning if this somehow happens (plus get some new run blockers).
Myron Rolle - A great safety at FSU who was a projected first day draft pick last year before he decided to attend Oxford. Smart, good young man and a great safety. Could be a steal late in the draft.
Daryl Washington - the guy is just a hard nosed hard hitting linebacker from an outstanding defensive team. If this guy falls past the second half of the second round, he will be a HUGE steal.
ANY offensive linemen projected in the first two rounds - our run blocking has GOT to improve next year. We have the backs, now give them some f***ing room.
Most of those guys will be drafted in the first two rounds, so here is the liklihood of us drafting them. Tate – 20%; will get him if he’s still around, but I feel that he wants to be a full time receiver rather than just an x-factor and return man, and think he will be drafted early on by a team who wants to fill that need. Gerhart – 25%; we will get him if he’s available past round 2, IMO. No way mgt uses another early round pick on an RB. Rolle – 70%; he’ll surely slip into the middle rounds, and with us being thin at safety, and him being a character guy + excellent at the position makes this a no brainer. Washington – 70%; Brackett will re-sign, but won’t be here forever, we are thin at LB, and this guy is good enough to start right away at WILL. O-linemen – 99%; either by draft or free agency, this is an obvious need to fill.
"A lot of times, Kenny, we have no idea what we're doing. But the DEFENSE doesn't know that we don't know what we're doing.....and that's next level." -Peyton Manning
DE, CB, OT, KR
Best fit on the board when we pick. Not sure how it will fall. Charles Brown sounds good then I think we have to go with a CB that is bigger than usual and look at DE. All good suggestions listed above. Special teams KR could use a boost but I don’t think Polian will pick specifically for that position.
In Polian we trust
he’ll take care of our needs.
That being said lets hope he upgrades the O-Line, maybe get a DE, We need a MLB with Bracket being a FA even if he resigns it wont be long term. We might need a depth CB. Finally and most importantly we need a damn KR and PR. Im tired of seeing Rushings call for a fair catch, and i want to see some better field position for Manning and Co.
In Polian we trust...
Except for drafting the very thing we need the most, as you mentioned, an O-line upgrade. Recent draft whiffs may make him trigger shy, but he admits the Pollack draft was just a bad class in general, and it came at a time when the Colts thought they needed a Saturday replacement pronto. Unfortunately we can’t redo that one and the Ugoh draft…
"You're hitting the wrong person. Don't you know you're hitting Ron Artest?"
To make things worse...
Polian has openly said that drafting players for the O-line has given him the most fits, or is the most difficult position for him to draft out of all.

Because he tries to upgrade the positions?

How about this idea......
I know we need to shore up the OL, S, and OLB. But, let’s look into the distant future and try to guess how much time Big P has left. I like the whole Rolle idea and think he is a perfect fit for us. I think he could even be a hybrid saftey/corner (I mean come on, this guy is a freakin road scholar) But, what if Tebow is left in limbo around the 4th and 5th rounds. This guy is smart and he is a winner with a Colt attitude. I think he could become a good QB with the right instructor. (PEYTON!) And we could be set if all goes well, for the future. Also we good add the wildcat formation into our playbook( I know how some of you feel about that). I even like the idea of possibly picking up Gerhart. But, I really don’t see that happening. Plus I do like Hart. I just wanted some opinions on Tebow. Do ya’ll think he can help? Do ya’ll think he can learn under Peyton. Can he help us while Peyton’s still running the show. And, can he be the man when Peyton decides to call it quits.(Man, that’s hard to say) Personally I hope Peyton plays when he has to use a walker. But, we all know the greatest of all time won’t be here forever. I think Tebow would be cheap and he would be willing to learn. Just throwing that out there. Let the debate begin.

No to everything involving Tebow.

I don't like it
No reason to do the Wildcat, just because about a third of the NFL teams do it on occasion. They do it because they don’t have the best QB in the league under center. I’d only consider Tebow if he was willing to learn how to block and play tight end. Even then, we already have Clark; and Tebow, for all his athleticism, probably can’t block. Not to mention he probably only wants to play QB, a position which he is not ready to play. By the time he’s ready (two years or so) Manning will still be our QB. It’ll just be a wasted draft pick.
