Fili Moala?

I've been searching far and wide for information on Fili Moala and his status with the team.  By all accounts 2009 was a superb draft for the Colts even if Fili barely played all year.  Anyone have any information on this guy and what the Colts think of him and what they are planning to do with him?  Was he hurt all year, or are the giving up on him or just trying to motivate him?

He's still a member of the team

and doesn’t look to be going away anytime soon. I don’t know really how the Colts feel about him or anything since I’m not with the team.

Development

DT’s take time to develop, especially a guy like FIli who is switching from a 3-4 DE to a 4-3 DT. Give him a few years and then we’ll see. Remember, Mario Williams was considered a bust by alot of people his first 2-3 years in the league and now he is one of the league’s best pass rushers

Time to develop

Good point and I hope you are right. I’m still a little concerned he might be a bust since he rarely played at all this year, assuming he wasn’t hurt. Maybe he thought he could make it on talent and could by without working hard…

by Silver7 on Feb 15, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions

a bust?

I mean, was he really good at USC? I can’t tell since I hardly watch college football, hope you can tell me about him…

after his Junior year as a 4-3 UT Todd McShay had him as the best player in the class

which needs a grain of salt, but shows he was a big time prospect before USC made him eat blocks for the 4 great LBs they had (2 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick and a mid round pick in one LB class).

But remember

Fraud McShay is an idiot who should be punched in his way-too-tan face.

We have different views on cool hair.

You should fire your stylist

and then stop payment;
and then mail dog poop to his house;
after which, a plague-infested rat somehow ends up tied to a rock thrown through his living room window;
at which point the phalanx of panzer tanks bearing down on his house might seem like overkill, but it’s not;
because the deep-earth core-drill you have rigged up next door, to tap into the earth’s mantle’s magma reservoirs and induce a volcanic eruption right on top of his house surely is.

But in this case, overkill is good.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

USC

From what I read he was at the top of the draft board when the 2008 started, but slid down over the year due to poor showings against elite competition. Some said this was due to the fact they had 3 top linebackers getting most of the press and stats which is typical of a 3-4 defense. I know I was excited when the Colts picked him. I hope he works out.

common point

I see we said the same thing. Great minds think a like.

The other veteran DTs really played great all year.

IMO, his lack of playing time is more a reflection of that than any sign of flop-itude.

The few downs he played showed some promise.

by Fernando Nougatieri on Feb 15, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

I truly hopes he develops the way we envisioned

Especially being an interior force on passing situations. I felt what really hurt us in the superbowl and whats keeping this defense from being truly elite, is a lack of an interior pass rush. By having an interior rush, it would not only remove the double teams from Freeney and Mathis, but reduce the chance of injuring either one of them. That is something I hope the Colts fix this offseason. Getting a rush from the middle of the line.

by metal_militia on Feb 15, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Meh...

Brock and Foster can do that, just not against huge middle 3 like Saints had… Muir managed to get through couple times but he’s really a run stuffer, not a pass rusher. Hope Moala can fill that role.

Imagine the possibilities

if Fili developed like his cousin Ngata and we had 3 rushing the passer not just one or two? This would free up Freeney from getting double teamed and help our suspect pass coverage.

He had a few nagging injuries too. I expect to see him have a larger impact this season, he was a rookie after all.

The best DTs play from day one

If you look at all of the top notch DTs they always start from day one. Fili did not play all year. I hope he uses that as motivation to make some changes come 2010. Not to mention, if the Colts have lost faith in Fili this means they will need to draft another DT in the top rounds versus drafting at another position of need like OL.

by Silver7 on Feb 15, 2010 6:55 PM EST reply actions

No way

If they did start they did nothing. Defensive tackle is without a doubt the toughest position to transition into in year one. Let’s see how some of the top defensive tackles did in their rookie years.

BJ Raji (#9 in 2009): 26 tackles and 1 sack. He didn’t start a game.
Ziggy Hood (#32 in 2009): 8 tackles, 1 sack. He only played in 6 games and didn’t start a single one.
Glenn Dorsey (#5 in 2008): Started every game with 46 tackles and 1 sack but was overall mediocre.
Sedrick Ellis (#7 in 2008): Started all 13 games he played in, 4 sacks and 30 tackles.
Kentwan Balmer (#29 in 2008): 16 starts and had 12 tackles.
Amobi Okoye (#10 in 2007): Started 14 games and had 32 tackles and 5.5 sacks.
Adam Carriker (#13 in 2007): Started 16 games and had 30 tackles.
Justin Harrell (#16 in 2007): 16 tackles in 7 games.
Haloti Ngata (#12 in 2006): 31 tackles and 1 sack in 16 games.
Vince Wilfork (#21 in 2004): 42 tackles and 2 sacks in 16 games.
Casey Hampton (#19 in 2001): 22 tackles and 1 sack in 16 games.
Kevin Williams (#9 in 2003): 51 tackles and 10.5 sacks in 16 games.
Darnell Dockett (#64 in 2004): 39 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 16 games.
Jay Ratliff (#224 in 2005): 22 tackles and 5 sacks in his first two years.
Justin Smith (#4 in 2001): 53 tackles and 8.5 sacks in 15 games.
Warren Sapp (#12 in 1995): 3 sacks and 27 tackles in 16 games.
Randy White (#2 in 1975): Started 1 game in his rookie year.

So there are Hall of Famers, Pro Bowlers, and high draft picks that took a while to progress. Justin Smith and Kevin Williams are exceptions. It take a while to become a great defensive tackle.

Good stats

Good info Homer. I said always but should have said usually. The top notch DTs I was thinking of were NGata, Wilfork, Haynesworth, Hampton, Williams, ect., but not necessarily in that order. I feel better now and hope Fili comes on strong next year.
