Freeney at LE?

Peter King (and others) have focused a bit on how Freeney's injury is especially bad b/c it's his plant foot.  Playing on the right side, especially when using the spin move, he relies on that foot and ankle.

So what if he moves over to LE?  Even if just for a few plays, he might be more effective over there.  Moreover, it should throw off the Saints some.

Lastly, the current forecast for Sunday is partly cloudy, high of 70 and low of 53 with a 10% chance of precipitation.

Interesting point. I think that coyer sometimes had him lining up in different places in the regular season.

I do know, however, that it is a big difference for an OL to switch from RT to LT (messes up your footwork). I’m unsure if the same sort of difficulties attach to DL positions switches.

In theory

This is an awesome idea and would make a lot of sense, however, I think what sandsnake said about the footwork is spot on…we could end up hindering the productivity of a 100% healthy Robert Mathis with this move. But who knows, some guys are able to adjust on opposite ends of the ling, so we’ll see!

This is a great idea

It almost makes too much sense.

If Freeney was out, chances are Mathis would play right end. So since they’re preparing without him, surely he’s taking some reps over there. That’d make our pass rush ends Brock and Mathis.

Is a right ankle-injured Freeney at LE more effective than Raheem Brock? Perhaps. Even if he isn’t, will that change their protection schemes and mess with their heads a bit? I’d say that’s pretty likely.

Maybe they’ll just use a new 3 man rotation among those guys and still slide Brock inside on most passing downs.

+1

Good idea. I was even wondering if they might try him inside on passing downs since his lateral mobility could be limited. Moving straight ahead could be less of an issue and they have played before with Dawson as a full time regular at a similar size at UT.

Last time they swapped sides Freeney injured his quad

He wasn’t used to everything reversed and his form wasn’t the same, leading to the injury.

I thought about this but it’s not so much the planting as the cutting, and he’ll have trouble with that on either side. We’ll just have to cross our fingers for his little tendons.to heal up in time.

Damnit

Someone in Peter King’s mailbag stole my idea. Well, I probably stole his, timing-wise. Anyways, if King likes it, it can’t be a good idea

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

It would also put a 100% Mathis against the weak link Bushrod

But I have an issue with King’s base logic. The LEFT foot for Freeney is the one that gets all the pressure on it.

Yes, the right plant foot is important, but try this at home (even if you are not professionally trained—go ahead do it right now at your desk!): Stand up and pretend to face a LT across from you. Fake an outside speed rush by leading with your right foot. As LT turns outside to push you away from the pocket, you plant your right foot, shift all your weight to your left, spin on your left, and then land on your right again.

Which foot/ankle gets more stress?

I’d say he can do this with his right Franken-taped, but not with his left so limited in mobility…

Maybe I’ll have to check some video to see if that’s right….

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

actually at this company

that wouldn’t be considered nuts at all. Organized stretch breaks are a part of the daily routine here. They have a HUGE safety culture, and everyone does something to reduce health and safety risk commensurate with your job. Because I have a desk job, my safety issues are RSI (like carpal tunnel), shortened hip muscles (from sitting all day), slipping in the break room, etc.

How can you not love a team that does this?

I hope Brock is taking all off this hoopla personally.

He seems generally under-appreciated by fans, and was basically ignored by most media until recently.
