Bethea for Dansby?
I'm jumping dangerously close to the edge of my football knowledge, but a couple of seemingly-unrelated posts got me to thinking...
First, I saw this blog entry this morning indicating that there are rumors of Indy's interest in about-to-be-released-to-unrestricted-free-agency Arizona Cardinal Karlos Dansby. My first reaction was, "well the Colts can be interested all they want, but unless we lose a free agent to another team, we cannot sign one of our own."
Then this morning, the post indicating that the Colts are working first to re-sign Gary Brackett, potentially at the expense of tendering Antoine Bethea.
These two rumors (for that's all they are for now) may be completely unrelated, but could the Colts be willing to allow Bethea to sign elsewhere so as to pick up Dansby? Not sure it makes sense, as I believe it would weaken our depth at Safety more than it would improve depth and capability at LB. It also seems to be a dangerous game of timing... what happens if Bethea is allowed to sign elsewhere and the Colts still lose in the lottery for Dansby?
Thoughts?

The Colts need
to find away to keep Bethea. He was probably the most consistent player in the secondary Indy had all year and has played every game the past few seasons, IIRC. The Colts need depth in the Secondary, and they need it now.
Peyton Manning makes it Wayne on them hoes!!!!
hmm
I’d think it’s more likely that Dansby is plan B for if they can’t get Brackett on a deal they like. Dansby is a big LB and plays 3-4 ILB and 4-3 SAM in the Cards hybrid D. So I guess he could work at MLB or SAM, but I don’t see them shelling out big money on 2 LBs, unless Irsay is throwing open the pocketbook like a big market owner.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Maybe...
… unless Irsay is throwing open the pocketbook like a big market owner.
OR… they’re sending Brackett a bit of a message during negotiations.
Just sayin’
Careful what you wish for... a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take everything you have.
Irsay is known to not be cheap,
unlike some other owners.

I love Dansby, but
I agree that trade would make no sense for the Colts. Unless there was one serious transformation in scheme. The current setup is way more reliant on playmakers at the safety position than OLB, and I don’t think Dansby would be great getting in the deep zones down the middle. To me keeping Bethea is paramount.
just to clarify
I wasn’t proposing a trade, just that the Colts needs to allow someone to walk to be able to acquire a FA prospect
How can you not love a team that does this?
Bethea is a top 10 safety in the league
Dansby is not a top 10 LB.
Even if Dansby WERE a Top 10 LB the drop from Dansby to Brackett is not anywhere near bad enough to justify the drop from Bethea to whomever.

I'd put Bethea in top 10
If he had better hands. He missed some easy interceptions in some games last season, and turnovers might help us to win easier
Of course we might have a healthy Bob Sanders for an entire season... when we play Madden
Was Bethea the guy that
missed that INT in the Super Bowl? or was it Bullitt or some other guy?

Didn't they both miss one?

There was one the announcers
said was too high for Bethea to grab. In my estimation it was a lot closer and right off his fingertips. Not saying we would’ve won but it would’ve helped.

I thought I remembered screaming at Bethea too...
But I had no intentions of watching the damn thihng again to confirm my memory.

I love Bethea
But remember when Dansby came out of college and was projected by some to be a Colts pick. He seemed to not really shine his first few years and I remember thinking, “excellent non-pick” but nowadays…. I’d consider it.
Part of the equation is “how comfortable are you with Sanders’s health and ability to play 19 games?”
I’m not that confident, ergo, Bethea (and Bullitt) is/are more important than Dansby would be. They’re both younger, and as good at their positions.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

I rather have Bethea
There’s some talent at LB – not Dansby level but good enough to stick with. Bethea on the other hand is really a top talent at Safety and with him, Bullitt, and Sanders (if healthy) there’s a lot of great talent there.
Bethea can get better (he’s young so he will) but he’s awesome already so I’m content.

Agreed
He’s got much room to improve, as well as Bullitt. But I think Bethea might have to begin training his catching skills with Painter so he can grab the ball properly. Yeah, it may sound crazy, but it’s a way to train both of them: Painter’s accuracy and Bethea’s catching.

yup, yup
bethea is much harder to replace.

There's no way the Colts let Bethea sign elsewhere in 2010
Bethea is a RFA given the uncapped 2010 of the current/expiring CBA. The Colts will either use/pay the 1st round pick qualifying offer ($2.521M) or the 1st + 3rd qualifying offer ($3.168M). More likely the latter to be on the safe side, and both options are more than acceptable given the situation/player in return.
The only way Bethea leaves the Colts is if another team signs him to an offer sheet, and the Colts don’t match that offer, getting the respective pick(s) as noted above in return. Recall the situation with Jason David in 2007.
There’s no sense whatsoever to the Colts trading the rights to Bethea, he is an incredibly valuable player. Sanders, Bullitt, and Silva are more SS than FS, whereas Bethea is the opposite, and Aaron Francisco isn’t as good as Bethea. Like others have stated above, he’s one of the better/best starting free safeties in the league. Arizona would definitely love to have him, that part is correct.
In fact I expect the Colts to franchise tag Bethea next offseason, to keep him for another year until they can either sign him long-term or find a capable successor.
And all the while two years of Bethea could cost close to what Dansby will likely get in his first year of his new deal. I’m not crazy about Dansby myself, I thought Arizona was overpaying him big-time the last two seasons.
What
The Colts will definitely resign Bethea. Also, I doubt there is any weight behind this Dansby rumor. As a poster earlier said, we don’t demand that much of our outside backers. Also, we very rarily dabble in free agency anyway, why would we do it now that there are so many restrictions for what might be a marginal upgrade and a much bigger cap hit?
