Franchise tag deadline today
The Colts are expected not to use their franchise tag this year, even to buy extra negotiation time like was done with Dallas Clark and Dwight Freeney. The Colts will attempt to get a deal done with Brackett without the tag. John Clayton puts the still in negotiation deal in the range of 7+ mil a year for the long term. Around the league however there's lots of tag activity.
- Steelers get a contract done with NT Casey Hampton freeing their tag for use on kicker Jeff Reed
- Texans will decline to tag CB Dunta Robinson
- Raiders tag DE Richard Seymour at a cost of 12.4 million, though the alternative was losing the player they gave their 2011 1st rounder for after just one year.
- Packers tag NT Ryan Pickett
- Saints will let S Darren Sharper hit the market rather than retaining him with their tag
- Panthers pass on a 21 million dollar tag of Julius Peppers
- The Seahawks franchise tag a kicker... again. Olindo Mare this time.
- NT Aubrayo Franklin is tagged by the Niners
- Vince Wilfork is under the tag, but the Patriots are reportedly close to a new deal with him.
The deadline to apply tags is 4pm eastern today.

We have to tag Jennings!
XD
Nothing that big of a deal really. Unless something happens about the Colts, Brackett and Bethea, I don’t see anything interesting about the deadline.

RFA
I’m interested in the RFA tenders(Bethea,Muir,AJ, Ch.J,Bullitt). The Saints have already started tendering.
Where did SB get the $7 mil. number from?
$7 mil. – where did BBS get that number from? It was not even in that interview with John Clayton.
I anticipate Polian giving him a deal like Jeff Saturday’s, a 3 year deal for $15 mil. or less with maybe half of it guaranteed. Brackett is not worth more than $5 mil. by any means.
It was in the Sportscenter interview an hour ago
though not in the one that just came on. I’m starting to doubt myself, but I’m pretty damn sure I heard him saying it.

and he says "Franchise type deal" in the interview linked
which suggests a pretty significant salary

True, but he is still a good LB, and as it has been mentioned before, he is a leader, good teammate, and mentor to the team.

4 year $10.1 mil. was his previous deal
Essentially, we could bump him from $2.5 mil. per year to $5 mil. per year when he is entering his 30s, that is already a 100% increase. Why on earth would we want to pay more than $5 mil. avg. per year (though I understand the distribution of a deal is not the same as average per year due to bonuses etc.)?
No, I agree man.
I mean, he is awesome and we all love him, but more than 5 mil. would be just wrong, even when he is a solid player.

Hayden got 8.3mil a year last offseason
new contracts always look too big, but in 2-3 years they are normal or even underpaying.

About Hayden
I think they actually overpayed him, just a bit. I remember BBS got mad when I first said that, but he hasn’t really been that good. Hell, against the 49ers, even Keyunta Dawson was faster chasing Gore.

I was surprised he got so much
and he certainly didn’t look good, but I think the nagging hamstring and the knee injury had a lot to do with it. He didn’t play a game healthy all year.

That looks like being overpaid too
Kelvin Hayden, after looking at this year’s performance, his contract looks like we overpaid for him too. But when Hayden was paid, we had elite CBs being paid $10 mil. per year around the league and he was not paid like an elite CB.
A reason why we cannot survive injuries to key positions is that we have so much invested in too few eggs in the basket – Freeney highest paid DE at that point, Sanders highest paid safety, Dallas Clark highest paid TE, and soon Manning will be highest paid QB. Something has got to give.
Forget pursuing a perfect regular season record, Moala not panning out left us with just AJ & Muir at DT and they had to be kept healthy for the postseason. Then, name a 2nd TE who contributed regularly to our squad since our SB winning year, that is right, none. If Freeney or Mathis becomes ineffective, huge dropoff in pass rush, all these are product of the way we pay players.
If these players are only valuable to us than somewhere else, then you would need to overpay them, IMO.
I meant to say...
…if these players are more valuable just to us, we would not need to overpay them making them the highest paid in their positions.
It worked with Jeff Saturday, it can work with Gary Brackett too. The NY Giants, IMO, are the only other team (having cut Pierce) that would be in the market for an MLB and I doubt they will pay GB more than $5 mil. either
True
The only decent game by a 2nd TE was Santi’s against Baltimore, and he fumbled at the Ravens’ 1yd-line.
Moala has to really step up this year. I think he can be an amazing player for us, like another Corey Simon (just kiddin’) but we still need depth.

Maybe Polian shouldn’t make all these players the highest paid at their position by such a large margin… Peyton would be the highest paid with a 16.5-17 mill per year contract, but he might get a 20 per year one.
It also helps pay for quality backups
When you have special teams players like Izzo or Osgood, good things can happen with maybe a turnover or two generated by your special teams. But we can’t pay for decent backups, thanks to starters hogging it all. We can’t even trade a pick and accomodate a returner like maybe Roscoe Parrish from the Bills etc. even if it cost us just $2 mil. in salary. Our top 25 can compete with anyone but then 26-46 probably stink it out there for the world to see. When Colts fans wonder why we rest players, look no further than the lack of quality depth that could end up hurting postseason chances. 2 times in the last 3 years – Freeney goes down or is banged up, we can’t deal with it effectively enough. Brackett goes down before the 2008 Chargers playoff game, Antonio Gates goes beserk on us.
We have to leave some margin for error with quality backups somewhere. Thankfully, safety is one of those positions we got lucky with Bullitt.
To add to the above
Offensive depth could be bolstered on TE front (if Santi continues to be injured and Tamme does not start sooner) but RB and WR, I am happy with what we have.
We are just one good player on the OL and DL away from taking our O-line and D-line to the highest level, who it will be, I do not know. We could use one more press coverage corner and a backup DE – hopefully Chick and King pan out on the backup DE front.
Anyone besides me really like Dunta Robinson??
I think he’s quite good at CB.
