2010: Going Forward, an over-reaction to an emotional loss
SuperBowl is now behind us, its time to move on. The combine is just a few short weeks away, possible Free Agency, and other decisions need to be made to get the Colts to Dallas next February. Finding a LT so that Charlie can replace Diem at RT is on most of our minds. Don't know if they find that guy without trading up. Other spots can however be addressed. Plain and simple, this team the way its currently constructed requires great depth at these positions.
1. SAFETY-The uncapped year will be a short-term help to the Colts. Bethea's true value to the organization was unveiled this entire season with Bob's injuries. Regardless of whether he's restricted or a UFA, they need to re-sign him. They need he, Bob, and Bullitt at the minimum with the weight that's placed on this position. With Bob's body, I think a fourth guy is needed.
2. D-LINE- Its a luxury, but after Freeney's ankle and the sights of '07 without him, a third guy that can get heat on the QB would be helpful. I love Raheem Brock as the #3 end, but as a fourth guy I wish Dawson was more of a threat. More than that though the time is now to get a 3technique to put pressure up the middle and disrupt inside out. That to me is why Drew Brees was able to so successful against them. He stepped up in the pocket, nothing disrupted him and he is 6-0 feet tall. The draft seems to be loaded with edge guys who could be better than Dawson in the middle rounds and the first round is the time to finally strike on a DT. Either trade up for Brian Price, hope Jared Odrick makes it to 31, or trade down in early second and draft Lamar Houston. Gut feeling, I think the Colts will go DE in round one.
3. CB- As with safety, the attrition rate on these guys is really high. With the tackling required in this defense they need lots of bodies. I am OK with Jennings if he is the 4th CB, which was not the case most of this year. He is a good gunner, a good tackler, but not the greatest playmaker in coverage. One more guy is needed to prevent Jennings from being the nickel back. Would also like to see Jackson back if the price is right.
4. KR/PR- Depth here isn't the issue. Quality is! Rushing really doesn't serve a purpose other than to fair catch. I don't understand using a roster spot on a return guy if he doesn't supply you with both the punt and kickoff duties. I actually like Simpson on the roster as a reserve RB and BACKUP KR. He gave the team a lift at times this season when needed, NE game comes to mind. Ideally whoever the #5 WR or 4th/5th/6th CB (if its not Jennings) would be ideal to take this spot.
That's my view, what about the rest of StampedeBlue? Go Horse!

Yeah, I agree with this
Kinda the second year we’ve been burned a little thanks to an injury at DE – Brock’s solid, but he doesn’t have that killer instinct that Freeney does. CB’s…I’d kinda like to see how the kids step up, but we need someone better than Jennings at fourth choice and we can’t rely on staying fit.
I kinda think we got pretty close this year and maybe with one or two less key injuries we could still have done it, so working on that sort of depth to get us through is the order of the day.

DE & KR
That’s what I want for Christmas in April. I’d love Carlos Dunlap (Florida) or Brandon Graham (Michigan) in the first and Perrish Cox (Oklahoma State) in the 2nd. I think Charlie Johnson is doing fine at LT, maybe pick someone up in the middle rounds to replace Diem, but you’re totally right about needing more pass rushers.

My prediction...
1. CB/DE
2. DE/CB
3. LB/LT
4. LT/LB
5. TE
6. Do we have a sixth round?
7. CB/WR/KR
Undrafted FA – Safety, OLine, DTs, and LBs
But I am not a genius like Polian. I have just realized that NO ONE can mock Polian’s drafts accurately.
Bob Sanders is starting to make me rethink my SBNation ID!

True with the Poilian line
I say he keeps to what he has been doing and goes offense in the first round.
My picks
1) OL/TE
2) LB/CB
3) DT (I hope Mike Neal is still on the board here he would be great at NT or UT)
4) OL/DB
5) DL/Returner
No 6
7) CB
See Ball, Get Ball. Quarterback Has Ball, Sack Him.

This is best scenario for the draft
1st:OT-Great if Bruce Campbell drops here, he’s a freak of nature at 6’7 310 and he’s a great pass blocker and a bit raw at run blocking, though with a lot of potential.
2nd:DE-Jason Pierre-Paul- It would be great to have a decent pass rusher when Freeney and/or Mathis is off the field. Paul is also a freak of nature at 6’6 265.

I like the idea of having multiple "freaks of nature"
to complement the one we already have at QB ;-)
How can you not love a team that does this?

The return game
isn’t on Rushing or Simpson. You can’t do much when you don’t have blocking. Come April, we HAVE to pick up run blockers for the O line and people who can block on ST…THEN the run game and return game will open up
So, apparently "Adult Language" isn't allowed in sig lines, so I suppose my new sig will be clean and "G" rated so I can openly discuss football with other blogs. Shame on me for not understanding!
