I am officially tired of 'Who Dat'

First off, could this be any more a blatant misuse of the English Language?  I guess, I am a bit jealous that we, as Colts fans, do not have a competitive unique 'battle cry', if you will.  I have officially grown completely tired of this phrase, and for you Bengals fans, not so fast.  Your 'Who Dey' is just as terrible, and a copy of something terrible.  I would compare it doing a cover song of 'Ice Ice Baby'.  It was not good the first time, leave it alone and hope it dies a lonely death.

I write this in the Charlotte, NC airport waiting to fly to Louisville, so I may retrieve my car and head north back to Indianapolis.  I attended the Super Bowl festivities at a value cost in comparison to our Super Bowl Championship.  A valeu you ask?  Being upper deck seats were averaging $2500 each in 2006, and I only paid $1100 in 2010, I would call it a value.  I am embarassed at our showing as fans, as it was easily 10 to 1 in that stadium, and it very much sounded like a Saints home game.  So, why am I tired of 'who dat'?  Imagine everyone one of those fans who outnumbered us screaming it every two seconds.    Those who went, thank you for representing the team proudly and with class.  There were obviously many parellels both personal and professional with these two organizations (and who thought a Hoosier would do us so wrong).  I was not upset with the loss of the loss of money for watching a loss.

My hope is the fairweather/dome team fans find themselves a new team to follow.  My hope is we gain soe history and the Colts marketing team starts considering creating a more robust game day environment, and creating more tradition around this team, this way I do not have to hear Who Dat so much, and we as Colts fans could have a rebuttal.

Cannot say I have one at this point.  Go Horse in 2011.  I think we will be back in the game!

RESPONSE BELOW TO RECENT POSTS:

#1 - This is not a slam on the cultural relevance of "Who Dat'.  It's like everything overused, it grows tiresome.  You know like a drunk uncle at a family reunion.  Great to see at first, but then he just becomes annoying after multiple beers.  I don't like it because its not mine to like.

#2- Thanks for the 'who dat' lesson.  I still don't care, and, I am well traveled, I get its a dialect thing.  Very cool your chant is a cultural tie to the team, and I find it very appropriate.

#3 - Not coming down on anyone for not going, but it was a bargain by Super Bowl measures as far as costs, mostly to the economy.  I will no doubt be in debt for a bit, and owe my wife more "foot rubs"  than I care to discuss, but it's not like Saints fans all used their FEMA checks for tickets.  It's not like New Orleans is swimming in money.  Draw whatever comparisons you wish, it was easily 10 to 1 in upper and lower decks.  Kudos for those who went and supported all of Colts Nation, we were as loud as we could be.  Saints fans great showing.

#4 - Saints fans, do not come over here and start what you have no control over finishing.  Support your team, and keep you opinions to yourself, as I noted in the above post, there is much to like about both teams, and we win and lose with class.  Great game, good for you and your city, you need it way more than we do on a larger level.  Be careful in 2011, Colts will have your number!  Enjoy the celebrations in New Orleans.

#5 - LIGHT SWITCH.

Enjoy.  Colts in 2011.  Mark my words.

Totally Agree.

Who Dat is one of the dumbest football phrase out there. It’s everywhere on the web. Wonder how many of the Saints fans are just bandwagon-ers.

Yeah, teams like the Saints and Colts

probably have more bandwagon fans than the Texans do total fans.

I think it’s kinda cute… And since when has football been considered high-brow? If I had a dollar for every time John Madden butchered the spoken word, I’d be able to buy season tickets.

aw HELL no!

The phrase “who dat” has been around since the 1800’s, and first seen in print in an african american minstrel show in the 1890’s (“Who Dat Say Chicken In Dey House”, or something like that). So, you are correct that it is a misuse of the English language, however your critcism is a bit shortsighted and juvenile. I doubt if I ever visited Indianapolis there woulod be any way to distinguish it from any other vanilla city. But then again, why would anyone voluntarily visit Indy (other than race fans- who aren’t the most intellectual bunch) QUIT WHINING ALREADY

TRUE

I’ve lived in the big easy my whole life. The “Who Dat” chant is important to the city’s french/creol heritage. I was really offended because of the FEMA comment. I know we are not the richest city and Katrina certainly didn’t help at all. But these people are family. The Saints are one of the few teams that are strongly connected to its city. On Superbowl Sunday, the Saints didn’t just play for a statistic. They played for a city that is rich with culture. Last night, after the victory, the french quarter was lit up with life. Not with sleezy booze and partying, but with joy and love. It was people of all different races hugging and crying. I’m a white male and out of nowhere, a black family embraced me and put their little boy up on my shoulders. He shouted “Who Dat?” as loud as he could and held my hand tight. So there you have it. We may not be able to afford a stadium like yours, but our city is alive now and its good people are celebrating and proudly shouting, “Who Dat?” regardless of what you say on this blog.

Get perspective

No one said anything about anyone PERSONALLY.

I AM ALLOWED TO BE ANNOYED BY YOUR CHANT.

Imagine I screamed in your face for four hours something you didn’t enjoy. Welcome to Miami experience.

The fans were great as people, no complaints. Blame your own for the FEMA comments,, as that is where they came from.

Its not about dollars and sense, no one made it about that. I applaud your culture, your win, and all you can see is the negative. CONGRATS! Go celebrate somewhere else, while part of me is thrilled for your city and its people, the other half is a Colts fan. Who just got whipped by Purdue’s finest.

Bandwagoners

I doubt you can really say that any Saints fan from Louisiana is a Bandwagoner. I’ve been a fan for 17 years win or loose, and havent gotten to see my fair share of bandwagon fans, they are a dime a dozen, but all of that aside the Saints beat the Colts by punching them in the mouth from the 2nd Quarter to the end of the game. WHO DAT has nothing to do with anything…….other than the COLTS LOSSED and the Saints are Chanting well into next season, simply beacause WHO DAT SAY THEY GONNA BEAT DEM SAINTS!? No one when it matters this year!

still whining

You have the audacity to call someone classless? Do you need anyone to point out to you what the Manning family and your QB have meant to New Orleans? If it wasn’t the Saints, I assure all of NO would have been pulling for your team. So quit whining already and get over the Who Dat stuff.

I agree on the Who Dat! bothering me because it is not proper English (right Cass?). I understand that it’s their deal though, so whatever. I’m just glad the Colts don’t have something equally annoying (perhaps, “Kick yourn horseshoes!”)

I disagree with your railing against the Colts for not showing up for the Super Bowl. Hey dipstick! We’re in a recession! I imagine it costs significantly more to get to Miami from Indy than it did from NO. And Super Bowl tickets aren’t cheap. I couldn’t even afford to go to one Colts game this year. So lay off the yelling at us who didn’t go.

Response to Who Dat?

I just love how you take shots at our motto and cultural sayings and then bring up something about Fema checks not being used to get to the game. You win and lose with class huh? Is that a backhanded comment about our situation of getting government aid for the biggest tragedy in American history? My apologies if I took that the wrong way. I know one thing, we Saint fans are probably the friendliest and most knowledgeable football fans anywhere. If you ever visited our area you would know what kind of hospitality we offer to fans of other teams. We embrace our friends and foes alike. We have been losing with class for decades and now we are reaping the benefits of a great season that we so richly deserve. And yes there are plenty of bandwagon jumpers that have jumped on board. Just like it happens for every other winning team in any sport. The difference is we are not a bland, boring fan base that has to look to the inefficiencies of other fan bases to vent from a loss in the Super Bowl, or any loss for that matter. We have something very different here in LA that you will never understand, no matter how well traveled you are. And if the Colts had anything of interest to offer the American public, it may have been a different turnout at the game for you. Just look at the multitude of great Superbowl songs that have been created by brilliant musicians from our area. All I heard were colt fans ripping songs that they didn’t like. Get your own songs and most importantly your own identity and you may experience what we have. You did try to get across that you were not slamming the cultural reference of Who Dat, but you specifically started your post with a negative comment on the blatant misuse of the English language. I guess that wasn’t a shot at “Who Dat”? I can respect that you are tired of hearing it, but I’m sick and tired of hearing how great Peyton Manning is. According to the overwhelming majority of the media, we had no shot because Indy has Manning. Once all that pouring on started, I knew it was over for Colts fans. It’s the whole team that has to have a common purpose and goal to succeed. We had more purpose than the Colts.. We as Saints fans had the entire country on our side. After years of ineptitude, we were just due for the breaks and bounces to go our way. It was our destiny. One thing is for sure, we are America’s team. Not the Cowboys. The numbers of so called bandwagon jumpers who attended the game and from the large number of adopted fans from around the country bear this fact out. You see we embrace these folks. They know it and we know it. There is room for anyone who wants to jump on board. Qui Ca? well traveled man!

Hey Scottzer

In response,

For the record, I heard MULTIPLE FEMA jokes at the game ALL MADE BY SAINTS FANS. Good material stolen, I thought it was hilarious. I don’t make back-handed comments, I punch people in the mouth. That’s who I am. I hold nothing back, and I am respectful but what I say. Don’t believe me, read my posts.

We also embrace friends and foes alike, so in that way we are the same as a fan base. I may be bitter we lost, but I have, what some refer to as “perspective”. I don’t have cancer, and have healthy kids. All is alright in my world, so really, venting is more about the comedy of the situation. We lost, I don’t play for the team. I will get over it. I support my team, not play for them. I write my comments on the COLTS BLOG not the Saints Blog. Funny, how you find the time to read over here, yet I will never visit your site for any reason.

If you think the “super bowl shuffle” is an excellent representation of music, then sir, you and I listen to completely different radio stations. I live in a state commonly referred to as the Hoosier State. You do see some parallels there, don’t you?

If you listen to commentators, you know nothing about football anyway. The game is decided on the field, not by pregame hype. I could give a shit of who “Americas team is”. I live in Indianapolis, they are my team. I think you forget we won our first Super Bowl in 2006 in the same fashion as you won this year.

Your post, while a good attempt at trying to communicate something, tells me plenty. You are a Saints fan. Go enjoy it. Read your blog, and support your team, and let us vent about Who Dat and other things we find annoying, like even having to respond to this post. Jesus.

I got u.Today i started hearing from the same dumb national media that it was reggie wayne’s fault for what happened, so I was looking for info on who colt fans were blaming for what happened. ie Peyton, the coaches or Wayne. I was just curious on what the fans thought. I would have done the same thing if we would have lost, on the Saints site. I’m with you on the banter back and forth, I just hope you don’t mind some banter from an opposing viewpoint. When I post it’s also total comedy or at least I find it fun to go back and forth as a test of mental fortitude. LOL. Get it? It keeps our minds sharp. It’s a good place to say things you would never say in person, so some of us cross the line sometimes. So please no punching in the mouth… I ‘m a lover not a fighter. I never said Superbowl shuffle was any good either. In fact I like to place a wager or two and most of the time when one team is hyped as much as the Colts were, I’m a contrarian and go the other way. That’s what I meant by those idiot media types. I just felt good about all the hype for Peyton, but it got nauseous after hearing weeks of it. The main difference in ur win and our win is you were playing Rex we were playing Peyton. Good luck and just know I didn’t come looking for trouble. But our team is our heart and soul, so interpreting it as a put down made me post. Take a look, it was my first and only post, so point taken on being here on a Colt site. I didn’t plan on posting anything. So again good luck, maybe we will have a rematch and Peyton can again subconsciously not allow himself to beat his first love the Saints. Scott

The Colts are a class act.

Our players don’t act like gang thugs, our coaches don’t brag about trying to kill other team’s QB’s after the whistle, and our fans for the most part don’’t act like stupid idiots. I can’t say the same for the Saints. It’s sad that the NFL and it’s refs did everything possible to help them win. Don’t expect the same thing next year Saints fans, if you do you will be very let down.

11 or 800,000 reasons Who Dat Nation is different than Colts Fans

I recently wrote that maybe if football fans had a little more to be excited about concerning your team, more folks would have showed up at the game and you also would have had more of a national following. Maybe even balancing the fan support during the game. I’m hearing whining from some, that the Saints had an advantage with all the support from around the country. My question is who’s fault is that? Surely not ours. I totally agree that it may have played a role. If you you don’t believe that an enormous collective enthusiasm for the Saints did not at least give them a small advantage in the outcome of that game, you are kidding yourself. With the main factors being the Saints out coaching the Colts boring vanilla game plan, Drew Brees outplaying his counterpart, and players making crucial plays when needed. But then it was reported that only 11 Colts fans showed up for the teams return to Indy from the Super Bowl! What’s the reason for the non support from Colts fans? 11 fans? The Who Dat Nation responded with 800,000 fans for the Super Bowl Champions return to the city that adores them. And we would have been there even if the outcome of the game were different. To put it in perspective, we had our own 11 Who Dat fans crowded in my Suv , stuck in 11 Miles of New Orleans bumper to bumper traffic trying to get to the celebration to watch 11 Mardi Gras floats filled with players and Executives celebrate our dismantling of the so called favorite( ie Tony Dungee). We then partied for 11 hours and had the time of our lives. Again 11 fans? So when I hear some of you saying that we have bandwagon jumpers, like that is a bad thing, and your whole fan base produces that minuscule amount of support for your team, I think some of you need to check into what a fair weather fan is. How many of you here were there to support your beloved Colts on their return? Colts fans will never experience or understand the love we have for our team. The only reason I bring all this up is because some of you posters are venting about the game by insulting our fans, players, and city. You got beat deal with it. So all I’m asking is don’t try to discredit or berate how we show our support or enthusiasm for the Saints, because it sounds absolutely bitter on your part. By the way where the hell has Karim the Dream been hiding? Maybe he was one of the 11 celebrating the Colts season and hasn’t made it back yet. We are waiting for you at CSC to finish the thread that you started. I know for a fact that not all Stampede Blue posters are like Karim and share his views, so if this is not how you feel, I’m not speaking to you. To all respectable Colt fans, I wish you luck and we all know you will be back. But in my opinion we are a young team that will only get better. Remember, in most peoples eyes, we should not have even been in the game to begin with. So improvements are inevitable.
