Want another reason to hate the Saints?

Well, here it is.

"Excuse me a moment...

…you posted this:

“Minnesota probably should have beaten New Orleans in the NFCCG”

Go back to your blog, sneaky troll.

The hell they should have beat the Saints, the Saints TOOK THE GAME AWAY FROM THEM.

I am getting REALLY IRRITATED at the constant “…yeah, but…” comments from the media and everyone else.

The Saints EARNED the wins they got this season, every single one of them. That comment is the typical sour grapes sound coming from a fan of a team that underperformed at fantastic levels. You’re so mad at your favorite team’s inability to even make the playoffs this season that you want to throw backhanded compliments at the team that DID win it all this year.

STFU & go away, LV.

This sad display of insecurity was inresponse to an innocuous side comment in my fanpost about the 2010 season opener. I said that the Saints probably shouldn't have beaten the Vikings. Does anyone who isn't enamored with the Saints disagree with that statement? They would have gotten their butts handed to them had it not been for the Vikings turnover orgy. All I have to say is that I can't wait for the Steelers' trip to NO this year.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

and saying that the Steelers won’t be any good next year is idiotic.

Well, let’s review that statement. Full disclosure in advance, my top three teams are Saints, Bengals, then Colts whenever they aren’t playing the other two, so I should be relatively tolerable to you guys. And while I’m definitely biased in that my fourth favorite team is whoever is playing the Steelers because I absolutely hate them with a passion, I’m also very much a realist. I do actually study my opponents, even when I hate them, and know key players names and at least some stats/tendencies/etc. So lets look at what happened this last year and see if that statement is truly idiotic or not.

First off, the Steelers lost four of their division games, one of them on NFLN to the “joke” of the league known as the Browns. That’s embarrassing enough. Then you look at the teams they beat and who beat them. Well they deserve props for getting the Vikings and at least squeaking by the Ravens once, but beyond that where are their quality wins? San Diego? The team that always sucks in the first four or five weeks, roars for the rest of the regular season then sucks at the end again? Nope, can’t count it. Denver? The team that started hot before people realized they really didn’t have an offense after all? Nope, not really. Green Bay? Well the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat these guys, so playoff team or no this was a team feasting on a ton of putrid opponents and I can’t give credit here either. Miami? A team that by this point had lost a QB and its best RB? That had no WRs that could hold onto a ball at all and a defense that was fading fast? Nope, wrong again. Then we can add in that but for incompetence that was truly Lionesque, they might well have lost to the Lions, they did lose Chicago, Oakland, and even Kansas City of all teams. Wow. Great evidence for a team that’s going to be very good next year so far.

Then you add in the fact that their OL is probably one of the worst in the league, certainly at least in the bottom half if nothing else. Add in that their star RB didn’t exactly perform all that great and you have to wonder where their running game has gone so fast. Was the Bus that critical? Now maybe that improves with a better OL, but can they get one? Remains to be seen. Then you add in that their “superstar” QB had a less than stellar season to begin with and even worse was sacked 50 more times on top of the 150 or so he’d taken before such that he actually had to miss a game with a concussion, and you have to question his longevity and future production. And then you have to wonder whether Sweed can learn to catch a ball and just how much longer Ward can continue to play (for the sake of all their opponents health, I hope the answer to the last is “not long”).

Now lets add in some defense questions. Well they have no clear replacement for the absolute lynchpin of their defense in Casey Hampton, who is getting quite old and isn’t performing at quite as high a level anymore. That’s bad. Then let’s recall the fact that the next two major lynchpins of their defense are coming off season-ending injuries (Polamalu and Aaron Smith) means that there is at least some reason to question if they are going to come back at a high level either. Troy almost certainly will, but it’s not guaranteed. Smith however is already 33 and age becomes a factor quickly on the DL. Then we have to wonder if they can find a corner that can actually play “cover somebody” instead of “cover nobody”.

Last lets look at next year’s schedule, starting with the divisional opponents. The Bengals started good and sucked at the end of the year. No matter how much I might dislike it, it remains the truth. But if they can find a passing offense again while still keeping a decent run offense and avoiding backsliding on the defense… well their defense was top 5 already in yards and top 10 in points. At the very least these won’t be freebie games anymore. Then the Ravens have a team on the rise in many areas if they too can find some WR help and some corners that can also avoid playing “cover nobody”. Not pushovers at least. In fact they are my grossly early pick for next year’s AFC-N champ. Then the Browns beat them with a horrid team this year. If Holmgren simply avoids totally sucking they might well beat the Steelers again at least once. Their remaining home opponents are: Patriots, Jets, Raiders, Falcons, Panthers. For all that I hate the Falcons too (whoever is playing them is my fifth favorite team), they are pretty decent and again aren’t going to be a freebie. The Panthers are a complete tossup. Probably depends on if they can replace Peppers and if Moore is really any good or not. Patriots won’t come free, and the Jets aren’t great but aren’t bad either. And the Raiders beat them last year so until proven otherwise anything is possible. Finally their remaining away opponents are: Bills, Dolphins, Titans, Saints, Buccaneers. Bucs are horrid now but the NFC-S has a history of rapid turnarounds so don’t count them as a freebie just yet. Bills and Dolphins can probably be counted on, but the Titans can not. And the Saints at the Dome? You think Lombardi Gras was loud, wait until your ears bleed upon setting foot in that dome next year.

Add it all up and right now they just aren’t that good of a team and their prospects for next year don’t exactly overflow with concrete assurances of greatness. They still could be very good with significant improvement in few key areas. But so could the Lions. So one of two things are going to happen. Either the Steelers are going to get a LOT better in the offseason and end up being, say, 10-6 to 12-4 and prove me wrong, or they aren’t going to get the major improvements they need and they are going to be somewhere between 5-11 and 8-8.

by FriarBob on Feb 9, 2010 11:24 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

The Steelers went 12-4 against an extremely difficult schedule with a very similar team in 2008

The difference? Injuries. When we get Troy and some other key players back next year, we’ll be back in the thick of things. Remember, the Steelers were 6-2 before Troy got hurt against the Bungles. We were the only team in the NFL to not lose a game by more than seven points. I know that your dream is that the Steelers miss the playoffs for all eternity, but it’s not going to happen. NO WAY we have a losing record this season. I hope the Bengals appreciate the good fortune they got this season from both the Steelers and Ravens, because they won’t sniff the AFCN crown this year.

Which is pretty much what I said. If you make some major improvements to replace/return aging/injured players, you’ll be fine. But if you don’t, you will suck because you will face a hard schedule. And pretending that there is no chance of that happening makes just as much sense as pretending that grass is pink.

He a Saints fan

and a lot of them have been just as bad with the Karma/Destiny bull shit. It’s crazy how much influence an unknown higher power has on the outcome of a football game. Gosh…you’d think a team could just win by playing better, but I guess the good ol days are long gone.

Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!

by coltsfan723 on Feb 10, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

No that’s not what I meant at all. I meant the Steelers have been evil pieces of crap for a long time who play dirty and seek to injure their opponents, and one day there will be a reckoning. Maybe it won’t come on the football field, but they certainly deserve for it to.

The Saints won because they played better. Any idiot who thinks they won because they were “destined” to or because of the refs or any other excuse is a stupid blind moron who deserves to be ridiculed.

But that doesn’t mean that justice won’t eventually prevail. Call it karma. Call it God. Call it revenge by angry opponents. Call it whatever the heck you want. But one day the Steelers will pay at least a little bit for all the evil they’ve done. And the sooner it happens, the better for everybody else.

by FriarBob on Feb 10, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

correction… “deliberately” seek to injury their opponents. Which, in anticipation of your likely retort, is a bit different than being accused of that by brainless media idiots who can’t even get their quotes of the DC correct.

I mean, come on, piledriving an opposing WR into the ground? If I had any say, the bastard who did that would never play another down in the NFL, I don’t care if he was the best player in the league who won Man of the Year hands down every year for being the most wonderful charitable guy ever off the field. Constantly spearing opponents helmet to helmet? Get these bastards outta here. Their kinda crap has no business in professional sports period.

I think

That is an extremely short-sighted and rude comment for you to make.

As you yourself are not a Saints fan, I think you lack the perspective to make such an assumption about the fans.

Correct me if I’m mistaken, but the Saints have won as many Super Bowls in the past ten years as the Colts.

Don’t you think it’s time to move past the “har har har the Aints suck” train of thought and start considering them as a powerhouse? Sure, they haven’t been to the playoffs even half as much as the Colts, but I think if the Saints continue to build through the draft and keep their core offense with an at least passable defense, they will be relevant for the next five seasons or so.

While I agree with most of your comment

but winning one Super Bowl doesn’t make you a powerhouse. Winning games, making the playoffs year in and year out consistently makes you a powerhouse. When they consistently win and make the playoffs then come back and talk to me.

Powerhouse?

Just three years ago, the team was in such a shape that Payton was accused of being suckered to build the offense around Reggie Bush.

To be considered a powerhouse you need to win more games and consistently play at a high level. Payton can’t get any more cute with his offensive play calling, because I believe he exhausted the tank this year. Then it will all come down to disciplined play and execution, which is what real powerhouses do.

Let's see

Two division championships in four years. (It would have been four with a competent running game and Deuce being healthy)

Two NFC championship games in four years.

An NFC championship victory.

A Superbowl victory.

Have the Saints been as consistently good as the Colts have for ten years? No.

Do they have the ability to be as consistently good as the Colts barring injuries? Absolutely.

I would also appreciate it if you would address my comments in response to your statement about how you perceive Saints fans.

I hate the colts...

Sry to start of on that foot but……. I’m a Chiefs fan so you probably know why? You guys have ruined our season many times, so it did feel good to see you guys lose. Even better, the game was pretty much over on a Peyton pick six? WHAT???? I am sorry but you’ll be great next year again no worries?Until the day P-diddy leaves then SOUND THE ALARM!!!

BTW

Some people are just happy to have a team. They do not always have to win to love them. I bet the convo would be a lot different around here the year you guys went 1-15, but let’s block that out ok.

Why would I hate the Saints?

Part of the skill of winning football games is holding onto the football. The Vikings didn’t. The Saints deserved their win. When the Vikings learn that football is not pass the parcel, maybe they can play in a Super Bowl.

I hate Favre

So I blame everything on him? The Saints were the David in Goliath nobody thought they could do it and they did. I mean an onside kick at halftime when your down by 4? The balls of that call are a pair I would wear, you know? lol

Not sure I'm getting this...

Because the links you posted don’t lead anywhere (methinks they deleted your post).
So you went to the Saints blog and posted something and in doing so mentioned that you didn’t think that they shouldn’t have beaten the Vikings, thus implying that they didn’t belong in the Super Bowl. Let’s pretend (for a glorious moment) that the Colts had won the Super Bowl, and a Saints fan came here and said that they didn’t think we should have beaten the Jets. Wouldn’t we be calling them trolls and giving them the Crackback treatment? What did you honestly expect to get out of making that comment, and how exactly did you expect them to take it?

It appears to me that what happened to you is exactly what’s been happening to people like the guy who posted that Resignation post here. You said something on someone else’s blog that another fan base found offensive, and they jumped all over you.

I originally wrote the fanpost for BTSC

I cross-posted it on CSC last night, to the aforementioned reaction. I was simply marveling at the insecurity of the Saints fans.

Again, they’re doing the same thing we do: defending their team against a perceived insult. Do you stop and ask questions before labeling someone a troll? My guess is no. I get that in this case it was an accident, but you can’t climb up on a soap box and call them insecure if we’re doing the exact same thing. It’s called hypocrisy.

I agree, attacking someone for a comment (negative or otherwise) regarding your sports team is silly and redundant, and screams insecurity and sensitivity. This is the web, folks. No one is filling out a “How dedicated are you?” scorecard. But until we stop doing it, we can’t call out others for replicating our behavior.

We haven’t had trolling problems at BTSC and I haven’t talked to them over here.

You made a comment about them on my last thread, I thought…. But whatever. I’m just saying, Stampede Blue calls a lot of people out for “trolling.” Hell, in my very first post here, BBS labeled me a troll. I can’t speak for BTSC because I don’t think I’ve ever read anything over there. So that statement wasn’t just directed at you. But I still think there’s a lot of truth to it.

Word, son

by trOOly on Feb 10, 2010 7:34 AM EST up reply actions

Most fans don’t particularly like being mocked, made fun of, told — or even implied — that a win was “cheap” or “unearned” or even just “lucky”, or the like. If you’re lucky, they just troll flag you and ban you. Usually even when that does happen it won’t be instantaneous, and before then you are going to get cussed out.

Add in that the Saints thrived on takeaways all season long, well any intelligent team should have KNOWN they needed to come in doing everything they could to protect the ball. And while we’re on that subject, the Colts deserve credit for doing that. If you were watching for it — and I was — I saw several times Addai or other ball-handlers covered up the ball like it was their physical child and shield it from the prying hands of Saints players. That was smart and they deserve props for it. Back to original topic… then when you add in that the Saints forced all but one of those turnovers and the crowd noise forced the other… pile on further the lingering high tempers from being pissed off at the Viqueen fans spewing utter idiotic tripe after that game… add it all up and you were lucky to get responses that mild.

Obviously, the Vikings didn't deserve to beat the Saints

You can’t turn the football over 5 times in the playoffs and expect to win. The conflict here is that I forgot to edit the post to remove the offending language. I was called a troll because they disagreed with one sentence if my fanpost. Do they really think that I would write a whole post just to slip in a shot at their team?

Considering how many Viqueen fans did nearly the exact same thing? Do you really want an answer to that?

by FriarBob on Feb 9, 2010 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

I was watching too...

Addai was great at protecting the ball. Every time a defender was within a few feet of him he covered up and took the hit. Caldwell did a VERY good job of coaching ball protection in this game, and the players did an excellent job of protecting.

Saban would bench him everytime he fumbled, so he learned how to hang onto the ball or sit his butt down. Very good running back! Very good person!

Ok maybe it was all a big misunderstanding

But if you read all the post on our board the last 2 weeks you would see the numerous times that people have come and told us we cheated
They have told us we took cheap shots on Favre ( who is my all time favorite QB ) that we got all the calls from the refs who screwed us over before OT on many occasions.
And the only reason we won is because the Vikes kept fumbling ( which we caused most)
The game was behind us and thats all we kept hearing on our blog and in the media
