Depth of draft plays to Colts draft plan
I just saw an interview with Polian during the NFL Network combine coverage. Most of it was the same non-committal stuff we hear leading up to the draft. I kept listening hoping to hear something a little different and I heard something I hadn't heard before.
Charlie Casserly asked Polian what position he thought the strength of the draft would be, position wise, at the end of the first round. To paraphrase Polian's answer, the draft is SO strong in DL and OL that skill players that would normally go higher and not be around for the Colts could be there. He specifically mention WR, CB and RB. He compared it to the draft where we took Reggie at 27.
Does this mean that the Colts will take a skill player with the first round pick? Is this a smoke screen to get OL to fall to us? What is the meaning of life? I don't know the answer to any of these questions, but I do know that I love this time of year!

Polian
Quite the poker player that BP. Very good at stirring the pot as well. Sorry, No pun intended Ed Johnson.
That's our Bill . . .
. . .but I noted that while he mentioned a few skill positions, he didn’t mention tight end.
Hmmmmmmm. Does the name Dennis Pitta ring a familiar note?
I know Dennis personally.........
Great kid, talented receiver. Would fit nicely on the Colts, from a talent perspective as well as character. Not particularly fast, but great hands and athletecism.
Except we don't need a receiving TE.
We need a blocking TE.

No D
He didn’t say anything about defense besides a a good d line class early… Maybe he wants you to think we’ll go offense but instaed go for a backer or db for a change

D in the First
I doubt it’ll be a LB. Linebackers are expendable in the Colts defense, so there really is no reason to waste a first round pick on a guy. Defensive back is a possibility, but unlikely, unless Bethea doesn’t get resigned.

Problem is...
The draft is not at all deep on WR, CB, or RB. By my count there is one WR (Bryant), one CB (Haden) and maybe two RBs (Spiller and Mattews) worth taking in the first round. Anthing of the other prospects at those positions are no better or worse than those who will be taken at the end of round 2.
We could use a CB.

This is not what I would do...nor would this be my mock draft, but I think Polian will do something like this...
1 – CB (have a sneaking feeling that Joe Haden may still be out there)
2 – DE
3 – OL
4 – WR/CB (maybe someone with return skills)
5 – OL
7 – LB
UDFA – TE, OL, LB, DT, DE
But, can any of us really every guess what Polian is giong to do?

Nope.
Polian is special that way.

his 40 time was terrible today...not as bad as dennis rogan's
but still bad…being in the 4.6s makes me think he will fall to about 15
having said that…no way he is still there when the colts draft

Yeah...
My comment was before his 40 time. Not in the top 10 now, but still gone by 20.
Ugh, at this point I expect a WR to get picked
And for me to bang my head against a wall. I’d be fine with CB.

I thought it was 18
As long as we have Peyton (and no surprise gay onside kicks are made) we will always have a chance to win.
No
It’s 42

I'll go with 18.
