Offensive Line Changes: My Theory
With the changes being made all throughout the offensive line and the notion of wanting to get "bigger", its clear that production in the run game is a priority. In the assumption that the Colts want to switch to more of a power running style team, Ive come up with a theory of what the Colts may spend a draft pick on next month. Fullback.
We have already seen the Colts use the I-Formation more so in the past two years than anything prior to it. Granted, the I-F has normally only been seen in short yardage and goal line situations, but given the failure to convert on 3rd down in the Superbowl and Polian's remarks regarding that play, I would have to assume that its a position the Colts may be looking to upgrade.

Pocket Hercules!
You may be right, MM, but i personally think an upgrade to the OL would make the I-F (with current RB/FB Hart) more than workable.
Maybe i’m just a homer for the little guy, but i really think Hart can help this team.
Careful what you wish for... a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take everything you have.
Yes!
Hart can help, as long they use him north and south. When they try to stretch him, he just doesn’t have the speed. If it were me, I’d use him on every single third and short… Let the little bowling ball roll!!!

My theory
is that this is all a smoke screen and that the Colts will not only draft an OT in the first round, they’ll trade up to do it!
You heard it here first, folks! LOL
How can you not love a team that does this?
whoa!
How’s the air out on that limb, LB?
Careful what you wish for... a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take everything you have.
just to clarify...
I’d love it if they do! It just would be such a departure, i don’t see it happening.

Smoke screen gets my vote.
Like saying last year that WR was the biggest need going into the draft.

THIS would be a smokescreen
If, after all this up-sizing on the OL, they draft a “Tampa-2” OT who weighs, say, 220 lbs.
Says Polian after Mel Kiper’s head explodes, “we like ’em fast.”
Says Peyton: “Good thing I evolved a third eye this off-season, and most of an ankylosaurus shell on my blind side. Just in time.”
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
interesting idea
that ankylosaurus skull must have been the actual reason for his surgery a couple of weeks ago…

"they'll trade up to do it"
LB, any thoughts on who their possible trade partner might be, or who Bill Polian would target to pick?
there must be someone gullible enough to do it
I’ve heard a lot of analysts “recommending” that the Seahawks (who want Brandon Marshall, but don’t want to give up their 6th overall pick) should work out a deal with someone lower in the draft to swap their 14th overall pick with. So the Colts could sign Marshall to an offer sheet that the Broncos can’t match, then trade Marshall and the 31st overall pick to the Seahawks for the 14th pick.
Stranger things have happened…
How can you not love a team that does this?
?
if the Colts sign marshall wouldnt they have to relinquish there first round pick? if that happens they can only trade marshall because their first round selection will go to denver.

How about Marshall for Bethea and our 5th round draft pick?
Will never happen but fun to think about
DO NOT WANT
No need. to invite the off-the-field issues Marshall would bring. We’re stacked at reciever and need Bethea and that 5th rounder more than another WR

Already a FB on roster
We saw a bit of an I-Form last year with Hart at fullback. I think Caldwell and Polian will utilize this formation more to get Hart involved. Then again, I always pull for the guy.

hart will not suffice
He is a tough player, but he will get worn down quickly if he is asked to block consistently. If the Colts do indeed take a FB, I see a Luke Lawton type of player

I could see rotating between Hart and Robinson. Gjion is a decent blocker, he just can’t catch

I'm calling
a Tight End in the 1st round.
Not sure who, but I can see them going for a bigger TE that can run and pass block. It will help our outside run game a lot.

TE in 1
There is really only 1 TE worth taking the first, Gresham, and he’ll likely be gone by #31. It’d say it’s more likely to see a TE in 4 or 5. Santi has shown flashes of being another recieving tight end, so the Colts really need and in-line blocker. Those guys can be found later in the draft.

Tom Lopienski
Did we draft him a few years back in the 7th round, or was he a UDFA? Anyway, he’s the last real FB I can recall in blue, and he DID catch a TD pass in that great 2006 playoff run. (Talk about smokescreen! Manning passes for a TD to his rookie FB who has played like 8 snaps all year? Never happen!) But we didn’t run him in front of Dom/Joe much that I recall.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
Too much focus on the offense
I would agree that the offensive line does need beefed up a little bit. But I think the real focus should be the Colts defensive secondary unit. They weren’t doing the best of job after the first quarter in the Super Bowl of putting tight coverage on the wide receivers. Time after time after time they would let the player catch the ball for 8-10 yards or more. Granted they would tackle them fast, but the reception needs stopped. Not just a quick tackle after the fact. And make sure to keep Antoine Bethea. He’s much healthier than Bob Sanders and last year he played better than Bob Sanders usually did. Sanders should possibly get cut, he’s injured much too often to be of much use, especially with as well as Bethea is doing.

You realize that Bethea and Sanders don't play the same position
Right?

Melvin
Bullitt is Bob’s back-up and he does a great job. I would agree we need to add depth to the secondary, particularly a back-up FS in case Bethea goes down, and some CB depth. I’m hoping Pouncey is available in the 1st, but if he’s not I’d hope for McCourty out of Rutgers

O Line
I think the Colts are trying to channel their inner 97 & 98 Broncos so they can hopefully win another Super Bowl behind a good running game without putting so much pressure on Peyton to be a miracle worker.
I hope it works.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
I'm hoping the improved OLine
will give Peyton the opportunity to actually work bigger miracles
How can you not love a team that does this?
I personally love that were getting bigger on the oline. Hart seems to be decent in the FB I-form. If the Colts can get Pouncey, or a LTackle that is good in run and pass, that would be huge. I want to see our running game crack the top ten in the league this year. If we can manage that, with PManning and the Receiving Corps we have, this offense will not only be explosive. It will be unstoppable.

I’m with you on this one. The “experts” will drool over the Pats, Jets, Steelers, and Chargers as the favorites in the AFC to get to SB XLV, but we know better. The Colts team that went to SB XLIV is basically intact and improving through FA and the draft. If at least 1 “expert” doesn’t have us as favorites in the AFC, then they are seriously mental.

I think we need more than a fullback to get our running going.
Polian is right, we need to get bigger, and come up with better blocking schemes.
Another theory I have is, that the Colts are so realiant on Peyton throwing, they aren’t working hard enough on the running game. But one thing about the Colts that amazes me is, we made it to the Super Bowl WITHOUT a good running game, against the Jets no less.
Nevertheless, if we have a great running game, Peyton won’t have to throw as much- less interceptions.
"You can't defend the perfect throw, what can I say?" Peyton quoting Marino
"As I grow older, the list of people who can kiss my ass grows longer"-Ancient Hoosier Proverb.
OLINE
We have to get bigger in the middle. Look at the size of these d tackles around the league. They start at 315 and go up close to 400 if they told the truth, which they never will. We get too much pressure too many times right up the middle. You have to fight size with size to have a chance at running the ball. It will make Manning even better.
