With the 6th Pick in the 2010 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select...

Gerald McCoy, DT - Oklahoma

Pick made by shake n bake:

While the Seahawks have serious needs at QB and LT, Seattle should have no problem getting a quality LT prospect at the #14 pick and McCoy is the clear best player on the board at a position where they could use an upgrade. McCoy also addresses the Seahawks other top 3 need, though a bit unconventionally. The Seahawks leading sacker was 33 year old Patrick Kerney with just 5. Seattle needs a better pass rush. Most attempts to address this are with a DE, but McCoy is the best pass rushing DT in the class.

How will he impact the Seahawks in 2010?

Pairing McCoy with Brandon Mebane (5.5 sacks in 2008) inside in passing situations could bring some serious heat along the shortest route to the QB.  McCoy would fight Mebane for a starting spot, rotate heavily if he lost, and likely pair with Mebane in passing situations.

If McCoy is taken #6 by the Seahawks, it would be the first DT taken in the first round by the Seahawks since 2004, when they drafted Marcus Tubbs #23 overall.  He will also be the first DT from Oklahama drafted in the first round since Tommie Harris was drafted #14 overall by the Bears in 2004.

I don’t blame you for the pick shake, you were in a tough spot. Realistically, if this scenario were to play out “in real life,” I’d be trading back if I were the Seahawks.

Idk if I would.

I personally would want to stick with QB and LT in the first, however if those top to are gone I can see they going BPA because of the players.

It's great value, but it would have been nice to address one of the bigger needs

ideally someone would pay out the nose to get McCoy in this spot, making it easier for me to address QB, LT and DE all early.

Another variable not mentioned

is Pete Carroll’s re-entry into the professional world. He probably can’t really go “wrong” this early in the draft, but what tendencies might he bring from U$c? What lessons did he learn from his first pass through the pro world?

I have no answers, just something to consider.

How can you not love a team that does this?

I think I could see this.

Question, though: You think Bulaga or Williams would be a reach this high?

That’s not to imply that McCoy’s not the BPA; I agree that he is. I’m just pondering variables. Okung would’ve been the real no-brainer, no question pick in the first 6, but he’s already gone. I’m going back and forth with myself on whether Bulaga or Williams would be proper value this high or not.

No it is possible and wouldn't be a reach however with the value,

that will still be available at LT at pick 14 you can go BPA since you are not getting that QB. I would not say taking Bulaga would be a reach.

Oh, that's right. I keep forgetting they have two first round picks

I was pondering who’d be available in the second round – Safford is showing on the CBS big board, and so’s a fellow named Vladimir Ducasse, who I’ve never heard of before, but Seattle wouldn’t have to wait that long. I need to remember that. One if not both of the two I mentioned might fall to them anyway, and there’s still Davis and Brown available.
