The Best Colts team of all time?
I made a Tecmo Super Bowl hack two years ago putting what I determined to be each franchises best single year in the game. At the time, I picked the 06 Colts, for obvious reasons. With a plan to remake it this summer, I was fully hoping this years' team could pull it off and be the easy choice.
But life ain't easy.
In the past version, I had non-Super Bowl winners get the spot over Super Bowl winners (07 Pats and 98 Vikings) and I've sent polls to those SB sites for their opinions on who should get the spot in my hack. I just posted the Pats one, the Vikings one already leans towards keeping the 98 team over any of the 70's runner ups.
So here I am in a pickle with our beloved Colts. I was thinking before of giving the teams that got the farthest preferential treatment, meaning ring > no ring regardless. It's tough since based on pure talent, I'd say the 06 team was actually weaker than many others this decade.
So I'm opening a poll. Which team is the best Colts team of all time? The 06 champs, the 09 runner ups, and I'm also including the 1970 Super Bowl champion Colts as well.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

'06 Champs...
…but only the playoff team. Their defense during the regular season was atrocious, but everything clicked in the playoffs.
If you’re going regular season, then ’09.

We were so much better than every other team that year.

You had the same thought as me.
You might want to specify pre-Freeney though.

I'm torn between 2005 and 2007. Naah, it's 2005.
The problem is I don’t know Techmo at all (yes, I am that out of touch with the world we live in). If it’s like most games, it takes a season’s worth of stats and creates probabilities for game situations that arise.
If that’s the case, 2009 is real close to 2005. If Freeney was not injured the end of 2007, I’d put that even with 2005. Though our season in 2009 was great, a lot of squeakers do not make for imposing stats, which is what generates the plays that win in those games, no? Are O and D equally weighted? Then 2005. Of it’s really an O-based game, then 2004.
I don’t think, in terms of a game that aggregates our production based on situation and extrapolates that to new game situations, 2007 or 2009 measure up. I mean, in this game, does Addai throw a GW TD to Reggie? He did in real life but that was just one play in a long season, so it’s statistical significance is nil—not likely to recur in a computer simulation. We stopped Faulk at 48 inches on a 4th and 2 to set up a win. It was a good play by the D, but it’s placement in the game and the season (and the opponent) blew it way out of proprotion for just one play. I cannot imagine that translates well to a game like that.
The 77 team was pretty good, too. 76 and 78 lost to the Steelers in the playoffs, but in 77 they started 10-1 and lost to Denver (also 10-1) away to drop to 10-2, then went into double OT in a playoff gave vs the Raiders before the Ghost to the Post killed them. Arrrgh. Not that I’m bitter or anything….
So, 2005. But what do I know?
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
You seem very bitter,
but there’s nothing wrong with that. I’ll still be ticked at Baskett in 30 years.

Old-Timer Here
Your frame of reference is too narrow. You said ‘Best Colts Team’, not Best Indy Colts.
Therefore, based on record and demonstrated potential, the best Colts team of all
time ( so far ) is the 1968 Baltimore Colts. Yeah, they ‘lost’ to the Jets in Super Bowl III,
but I still maintain that was a ‘business deal’ between the two leagues. The Colts got
inside the Jet’s 20-yard line numerous times during the game, only to ‘magically’ blow
each opportunity until Unitas was finally put in the game.
In any case, the Colts were absolutely dominant that season, compiling a 13-1 record
in the regular season. Only two games were competitive; their 10-point loss to Cleveland, and their end-of-regular-season 10-point win at the Rams. They then took
a 21-0 lead and cruised against the Vikings in the first playoff game, and crushed the
Browns in the NFL championship game. Then came the inexplicable ‘sacrifice in Miami’
vs the Jets, and the newly ‘legitimized’ AFL was now able to merge with the ‘mighty’ NFL
on an equal footing. Some notables from that team:
QB ( out most of the season with injury ) Johnny Unitas
RB Tom Matte
WR Willie Richardson, Johnny Orr
TE John Mackey
C Bill Curry
DE Bubba Smith, Ordell Braase
LB Mike Curtis, Don Shinnick, Dennis Gaubatz
S Rick Volk
DB Bobby Boyd, Lenny Lyles
Comparison
The majority here are saying 2005. That is very understandable, given the
juggernaut consistency of that team until the Dungy family tragedy sapped
the vitality from the leadership. I believe that the 2005 team was the best of
recent times, but let’s do a comparison of superiority:
2005 Colts Record 1968 Colts Record
Wk. 1 ’05 Defeated Baltimore 24-7 Wk. 1 ’68 Defeated 49ers 27-10

CONCLUSION
The 2005 Colts Won 14 and Lost 3 by an average margin of 27-13, scoring 431 points and
giving up 240. They posted no shutouts and won no playoff games.
The 1968 Colts Won 15 and Lost 2 by an average margin of 31-10, scoring 537 points and
giving up 174. They posted 4 shutouts and won two playoff games, including being one of
only two teams to win the NFL championship ( the 1969 Vikings were the other ) but not be
World champions.
You be the judge.
I agree totally with Ufansince65.....
Not only that, but I’d love to sit and have a beer with him/her. We are both old fahts.
2005 was the most complete team.
But I’d want the 2004 team if I had a choice, just b/c of the offense. Imagine if we had just had a team with the 2004 offense and the 2005 defense (allowed 13.8 points per game through the first 13 games)… oh the possibilities…

But it was a year and a team I’ll never forget. That Jets playoff game was beautiful football.
I’m not really interested in picking the “best team”. I go by how the games make me feel. This last year was really entertaining to watch. (and gave us a LOT to talk about).

Reading the comments,
it seems that you made the poll too narrow by only including those 3 seasons. 2005 and pre-Freeney injury 2007 have to also be included, and some prefer 2004 for some reason. It might have been better to make it an open question.

Thanks for the feedback
I will already say, the 2005 team will NOT be on there. I don’t care how well did they in the regular season, they completely flopped in the playoffs, and because of that, two teams that made the Super Bowl beat them instantly on my scale for this game.
Interesting facts on the 68 Colts team I didn’t know. But once again, regular season success really means so much, and the other old-timer team didn’t get much love on the poll. (But that might be somewhat influenced by age-bias)
Insert Clever Statement Here
Maybe you should
Restrict it to Indy Colts teams. Since the game features the Indianapolis Colts.
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation
So You're A Fan Of What?
You’re either a fan of whatever football team represents Indy, or you’re a fan of the franchise
and it’s symbol. This was the dilemma forced upon the Baltimore Colt’s fans in switching
alliegence to the Ravens. If you are a Colts fan and not merely an Indy fan, then you should listen to Shake’s informative series ‘Know Your Colts History’. Having lived elsewhere when the Colts were in Baltimore and then in Indy, I rooted for them regardless. I lived in Chicago
during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, including the 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle, but never wavered
in my alliegence to the Colts.
There is a lot of golden history associated with the Colts that you may not be aware of.
Knowing it will make you more appreciative of what the great horseshoe really stands for.
All the great stories. Check up especially on the tales of Hall Of Famer Art Donovan, the
Colt’s greatest DT. Here’s a little sample: back in the days before the NFL-AFL merger,
the head slap was legal, and was made famous by Deacon Jones of the Ram’s Fearsome
Foursome. But Art Donovan gets the award for the most ‘creative’ head slap. You see, in
1957 the Colts were playing the 49ers in old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. It was on
a Sunday afternoon following several days of the field being used by the Barnum & Bailey
Circus. In the first quarter, Art noticed that the circus had left something behind on the
field; something he could use. The 49er’s offensive line was subjected all afternoon to
a rain of ELEPHANT DUNG via the head-slap. Classic.
By the way, the Colts won two other World Championships. The first was in 1958 in the
game called ‘The Greatest Game Ever Played’, when they beat the Giants in the first ever
televised championship-in overtime, no less. This game was called the ‘greatest’ because
it had the most impact for the league in ratings and subsequent attendance. ( The actual
greatest playoff game is probably the 1974 Raiders-Dolphins stunner ). The second
Colts world championship was in 1959, when they clobbered the Giants again 31-16.
The greatest tight end in history, John Mackey, played for the Colts. Gino Marchetti was an
awsome Hall Of Fame defensive end. Mike Curtis is the reason the middle linebacker
position is called the ‘Mike’ position. The ‘Mad Stork’ Ted Hendricks was the most
intimidating strong-side ’backer of his era. The list is almost endless. Watching them
again on Youtube is a godsend. Enjoy your heritage.
Correction
Jake The Snake’s ‘Know Your Colt’s History’, not Shake’s.
I still say the 2005 team was the best Indy Colts team.
It was the most complete. But, I understand your points. I would have to go with the 2009 team – I think it was more complete than the 2006 team. If not for conservative coaching and one Hank Baskett, there would be no question.

The best Colts teams
The 2006 Colts team was the champion team, but they were one of their weaker teams. In 2004, the Colts put up the best stats with Peyton setting a record for most TD’s in a season (eventually beaten by Tom Brady).
But the two most talented teams I ever saw the Colts have was in 2005 and in 2009. In 2005, the Colts were easily the most dominant team in the NFL. In the first round of the play-offs they played the Steelers (the 2005 champs) and played by far their worst game of the entire season. It wasn’t that the Steelers caused them to play bad, the Steelers weren’t nearly as good as the Colts. The Colts just beat themselves in the play-offs in 2005. If they’d have beaten the Steelers in that game (which they nearly did) they’d have easily won the Super Bowl in 2005.
But I think the 2009 team was the best. They might not have been the most flashy, but they were the most balanced. This year they had more talented receivers to go to than ever. They had TWO good running backs. They had a descent defense FINALLY with the introduction of Coyer as defensive coordinator. And Caldwell made moves that were better than those Dungy made regarding coaching staff moves, player moves, and play calling. Caldwell addressed weaknesses Dungy left open for years. And he made aggressive play calls that Dungy never made. And the result was starting off 14-0, something Dungy never did.
The thing is I think the 2009 Saints were better than any team the Colts have ever faced and the Saints played the best game of their entire franchise history against the Colts. For the Super Bowl the Saints pulled out ALL the stops in order to win. The opening of the second half with an on-side kick is evidence of that.
Here’s how I’d rank the Colts teams:
1st: 2009
2nd: 2005
3rd: 2004
4th: 2006
5th…I’d go out on a limb here and make a call few would probably make. But I’d pick the year Captain Comeback and Coach Marchibroda took them to the AFC Championship against the Steelers. They had a chance to win the game with a hail mary at the end. Maybe it wasn’t one of the top 5 teams, but man was that a fun game to watch.

If that's Steeler domination I'd hate to see the Steelers when they didn't dominate
The Steelers never dominated in that game. The Steelers struggled the entire game in that game and even after playing their very best game of the year could barely beat the Colt who were easily playing their worst game of the year because they were rusty. If the Colts would have come out and even played mediocre they would have stomped the Steelers. The Steelers were lucky to even make the play-offs that year. They had to hope and pray that a few teams would lose just so they could make it into the play-offs.
by ColtsFanInEnemyTerritory on Mar 25, 2010 6:47 AM EDT up reply actions
The Steelers were leading 21-3 after three quarters, and would have won 24-10 or 28-10 had it not been for one of the worst reversals in NFL history.
Your offense was utterly smothered for the first three quarters with the exception of a long second quarter drive that ended in a FG. The Colts’ many issues on that day cannot be attributed solely to rust. Most teams with bye week win their first playoff game(did Indy, Minnesota or New Orleans show any “rust” in the divisional round this year? No). The Steelers weren’t lucky to make the playoffs that year. They started off 7-2(one of the losses came thanks to Tommy Maddox filling in) and lost three straight due to injuries and tough opposition. Then, when the chips were down, they rebounded to win their last four games in dominating fashion. Either you have a horrible memory, or you just aren’t willing to accept the fact that arguably the best Colts team since 1968 got beaten at home by a Wild Card team, fair and square.

Pretty Good List For One Decade Only
Ahem. Your list is incomplete.
As long as I am addressing those who prefer the ‘short view’, here’s a
question for you all:
What’s the difference between a team being World Champion Of Professional
Football and being Super Bowl Champion? This should be easy, and the
correct answer should give pause to those who get excited by saying things like
“The Cowboys have been to more Super Bowls than anybody” or “The Steelers
have won more Super Bowls than anybody”….
What are you trying to say?
I don’t appreciate the tone of condescension.

Not Condescension; Just Protesting The Narrow Focus
My complaint here is with those who focus their search for the ‘Best Colts Team’
almost entirely in the last ten years. I have also been irritated in other forums and
by ESPN when they talk about ‘who won the most Super Bowls’, the ‘greatest
Super Bowl dynasties’, etc. They act like professional football and it’s World
Championship didn’t exist before Super Bowl I. To answer the question, there is
NO difference between the world champion of professional football and Super Bowl
champion. The Super Bowl is not some ‘higher level’.
Well, you can be rightly proud of the Steelers winning 6 world championships.
However, ESPN implied that was sufficient cause to say the Steelers were ‘the
greatest francise ever’. They’re making progress, but they’re not quite there yet.
The Green Bay Packers have won 12 world championships, including three in a
row ( ‘65/’67). The New York Giants have won 9.
I’m not complaining about your post in particular. I’m complaining about the
prevailing attitude in this forum that the distant past is irrelevant. I disagree.
It’s a different perspective that comes from having watched 5 decades of NFL
football. When the Colts got to this most recent championship game, the average
fan might think ’They’re trying to win their third Super Bowl’. I was thinking ’They’re
trying to win their fifth world championship, and close the gap on the Steelers.
I didn’t mean to offend you: I am sorry that I did.
I'm impressed at you recognizing 2007.
That was such a great team……

You guys were great that year
The Pats came back from ten down in the 4th to squeak out a win, and the Chargers got incredibly lucky one week later. Those were the only two legit losses you had until the playoffs, when injuries finally caught up with you(lack of pass rush, Harrison’s fumble, etc). Had the Colts beaten the Chargers, I think they would have knocked the Pats as well. But I think things worked out fine anyway! ;-)
