Why Ron Turner?: How this Move Could Either Make or Break His Career
This has probably already been discussed, but how is it that a coach like Ron Turner, who has a horrible resume, is going to coach the best wide receiving core in the NFL? I don't know if it's because he knows this system or because Caldwell and Polian see something in him, but this just doesn't make sense to me.
I've been checking the other sports sites and I disobeyed the golden rule of reading articles online on sports sites, "never read the comments." Aside from a predominate opinion that all Hoosiers are quote, "brainless hicks," the fans of the former teams Turner has coached for have nothing but bad things to say about him. Now I'm not saying that you should take the mindless idiots at Yahoo Sports seriously, but it does make hiring Turner odd.
Who knows, maybe this will make Turner's career and he can make the receivers be able to catch the ball better (hopefully). All I know is that this upcoming season there is no room for error. The Colts are the most complete team in the NFL and anything other than them hoisting up the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl 45 is an utter failure.

People get promoted until they reach their level of incompetence (Peter Principal)
Turner was a terrible OC, but how did he become an OC in the first place????
By being a good position coach.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Good point
Point well made as always Shake n Bake.

that still doesn't explain how Cam Cameron has a job...
sorry, I have a bias against him. He went to my high school back in the ’70s and my senior year he was inducted into the “Alumni Hall of Fame.” This was while he was the OC in San Diego.
But Seriously, let’s look at his career:
‘94-’96- QB coach with Redskins; coached Gus Frerotte and Trent Green
‘96-’01- Head Coach at IU 18-37; how the hell he stayed on for so long boggles my mind
‘02-’06- OC for Chargers; I credit the success there to the awesome talent who did so well despite his play calling.
’07- HC for Miama; 1-15 hahahahahaha
’08-present- OC for Ravens Their fans credit the lack of offensive production on him and not opening the playbook for Flacco.
But seriously I think he must be a great interviewer or does unspeakable things under the table because I don’t see how he had all these jobs.
Exactly
Wade Phillips… Norv Turner… Gregg Williams… etc – all examples of guys who suck as ultimate leaders but were great one step below that (though Williams seems to have won a lot of people over this year – wouldn’t shock me if he got another HC gig at some point). Turner made some stupid decisions in a position of power, but he doesn’t have to make decisions now. Now he gets to teach our 4 awesome wideouts little things about footwork and technique and inside or outside releases, or blocking, or drawing flags, etc… all kinds of little things. There’s no way for us to know exactly where he excels, but obviously he demonstrated competence, or they wouldn’t have hired him.
Mock drafts are stupid and pointless.
When your offence is crap
and youve made huge trades to make it good, then someone has to take the fall.
To me it seems completely unfair it was Turner who took the hit but theyd rather throw him under the bus then admit theyve made personel mistakes.
So im not sure if he was a terrible OC, sure he might not of been amazing but I think people have been unfair to him.
Turner is better than his resume
I think Ron Turner is better than his resume would suggest. And his resume isn’t all that bad. The guy has a lot of experience.

Lovey Smith had to throw somebody under the bus so he didn’t get fired. And Polian is smart enough to know when someone has coaching talent. Look at who he’s brought in: Dungy, Caldwell, Coyer. Not a single one of them as been a bust. Turner got thrown under the bus and they let go a good assistant coach to make him the scape goat, allowing the Colts to easily pick up a good assistant.
I don’t think the Colts will be disappointed.

Meeks, Purnell, Fangio.... um, there has to be some other chaff in there with the wheat
They may not have been direct Polian hires, but they were on the staff that he was in charge of. Then again, well, they aren’t in Blue anymore for a reason.
There is a long and respected history in the NFL of taking talented guys who flame out at higher levels and having them excel back at a lower level—Gregg Williams is an instant classic in NOLA—bust as a HC, awesome as a DC. Who leads Pittsburgh’s D? Jauron. Not a great HC, but a great DC.
Shake’s ref of the Peter Principle is correct, if misspelled. (as we were taught in 3rd grade, princiPAL is your pal, the guy who runs the school… ick) The Peter Principle—it’s why I have risen to the lofty title of Daddy, but am smart enough not to aspire to being a Mommy because I’d be totally incompetent. That, and after a year of being a mommy, nobody would want me as a daddy, or anything else….
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
Turner has experience.
Ron Turner will not be asked to save or lead the Colts offense anytime soon. I think Turner was brought in to learn the system, then, after some time in the system be promoted. I’m not saying Turner is great, but, he could be great for us. This is no different then, Caldwell, Metzelaars and Clyde. They were brought in and groomed for a specific p[osition. Polian deserves the benefit of the doubt. He hasn’t given fans any reason to doubt his system. I like the fact that we get a former oc as a position coach. It seems like Turner would almost be over qualified for the spot. Moreover, I would prefer to see him WR coach, over a lesser known/ qualified candidate.
