With the 18th Pick in the 2010 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select...

Kyle Wilson, CB - Boise State

Pick made by LV Steelers Fan:

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2010 offseason with numerous needs on the defensive side of the ball. Nose Tackle, MLB, Safety, and CB all were to be major Steelers needs, and O-Line wouldn't have hurt either. However, several offseason moves have significantly changed the Steelers' outlook. The re-signings of Ryan Clark and Casey Hampton, coupled with the acquisition of free agent Larry Foote, have reduced Pittsburgh's likely choices at pick #18 to CB and OL.

In our draft, Bryan Bulaga, Mike Iupati, and Bruce Campbell are all taken, leaving OT Trent Williams as the only remaining blue chip lineman. This would be the pick of most casual Steelers fans, but Willie Colon has developed into a decent tackle and Max Starks is locked up to a big deal for the next few years. Thus, Williams seems less likely to be the Steelers' choice than the man I am taking: CB Kyle Wilson out of Boise State.

Wilson is an aggressive corner whose great hips allow him to stay with a receiver and close in for the play. This can also be a liability, as he is vulnerable to double moves and significant coverage penalties. He is deceptively strong(25 reps at 225) considering his relatively modest stature(5'10", 190).

The William Gay experiment at CB failed miserably, and he simply cannot be used as more than a nickel corner. Deshea Townsend left in free agency, and second year men Joe Burnett and Keenan Lewis have not broken through yet. Simply put, the Steelers need a corner desperately if they want to get their defense back among the league's elite.

How would he impact the 2010 Steelers?

Wilson is likely not going to develop into an all pro, but could easily be a #2 corner opposite Ike Taylor in the Steelers defense, probably as soon as early in the 2010 sesason.  Wilson is a student of the game, which should help him master Pittsburgh's complex defensive schemes and slip into the starting role quickly. His leadership skills and penchant for trash talk makes him a perfect fit for a Steelers defense that is in desperate need of a vocal presence.

If Wilson is taken #18 by the Steelers, it would be the 1st CB taken in the first round by the Steelers since 1993, when Deon Figures was taken #23 overall.  He will also be the 2nd first round draft pick ever from Boise St., with the other being OT Ryan Clady by the Broncos in 2008.

Correct pick. Helps sure up the vaunted Steelers defense

OK pick, but should have looked at other positional needs first

OK pick, but too much of a reach for Wilson at #18

Wrong pick. Help isn't needed to their defense this early.

This is def. a reach in my book.

I do not see him as a Mid round draft pick but a late one at best . More likely to be a 2nd rounder.

Now this is a great pick in my book

Wilson is going to be a great corner at the next level and he should definitely help the Steelers defense return to their ’08 form.

rough spot to pick LV

Earl Thomas long gone, Iupati snatched out from under you. Dan Williams is there, but you guys resigned Hampton.

Brandon Graham is ripe for the picking

Atlanta should thank its stars that Brandon Graham is right there where they want him, to play in the 4-3 where he would create havoc as a 4-3 DE.

Steelers, I feel could have gone with Trent Williams, it would have been great value to boost an O-line that will get better with him protecting Big Ben. I am surprised Trent Williams has fallen so far.

guys that can't play LT right away rarely go this early.

Williams has the tools but didn’t get them put to work well last year when he flipped over to LT.

I understand

But the Steelers are committed to starks and his big contract for three years at LT, and Colon has developed into a decent RT.

It was

I was a bit surprised by some of the earlier picks, but I think Wilson is a solid pick here. A bit of a reach, yes, but we have a huge need for a CB so it’s not unreasonable, IMO.

This is the guy

That I hope when the real draft comes around he is sitting at #31…. Excellent ball skills, excellent strength, AND was an All-American as a kick returner, sounds like someone the Colts can use right now!

It’d give us the tough decision of who to play at nickelback— Powers, Lacey, or Wilson….

Kyle Wilson is not willing in run support

Read this about Kyle Wilson’s run support:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/556990?tag=pageRow;pageContainer

Run Support: Plays with a cover corner mentality and rarely involves himself in run support. Has only averaged seven solo tackles a season in three years as a starter, despite posting 117 total tackles through his junior season. Flashes physicality as a hitter, but is typically more of a duck-and-swipe tackler. Has taken advantage of unsuspecting and defenseless receivers catching passes over the middle.

Now, contrast this with Devin McCourty’s run support here:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/563691?tag=pageRow;pageContainer

Run Support: Very willing (and able) to support the run. Attacks running backs coming into his area, bringing them down with veracity. Holds up his man to force plays inside. Hustles across the field to plays on the opposite sideline. Tough player, but still lacks the size to consistently get off downfield blocks from larger receivers.

I am sorry, our nickelback has to support the run, Lacey and Powers are not good tacklers, Marlin Jackson was and Kelvin Hayden is, Tim Jennings was. Devin McCourty fits our system to a tee and is much better in run support though he is rated lower than Kyle Wilson because Kyle Wilson is better suited for man coverage. I would rather have Devin McCourty for that very reason in a run happy division.

I read that Wilson was good in run support, along with being the strongest and toughest of the CBs

I think that McCourty would be great for the Steelers, but he seemed like too much of a reach at 18. Now, if he fell to us in the second… :-D

Who needs run support?

Who needs run support when “Hair” Polamalu is everywhere? :-)

Trent Williams is the only blue chip O-line player left?

What about Anthony Davis? Did everybody forget about him?

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Syracuse-Butler is going to be an epic game. Go Butler!

Who is Anthony Davis?

And the Steelers won’t go for a tackle in the first unless Okung falls to them. LOL
