With the 23rd Pick in the 2010 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...

Trent Williams, OT - Oklahoma

Pick made by bracketismyboy:

Come draft day, Packers fans will still be haunted by two images from last season: Aaron Rodgers being devoured by Jared Allen (over and over again), and their over-hyped secondary being torched by Kurt Warner in Arizona. While GM Ted Thompson is known for picking BPA regardless of need, the stars align and Green Bay fans rejoice as he picks up one of the draft's top tackle prospects and hopefully puts an end to Aaron Rodgers' nightmares.

After a sick combine (where he posted the second fastest 40 time for an offensive lineman and the top vertical jump), Williams' stock continues to rise: Sporting News' Russ Lande even has him going 2nd overall to the Lions. Williams started 25 games as a right tackle for Oklahoma and dominated before switching to the left in 2009, where his performance was shaky but improved as the season went along. He projects as a great RT with the size, burst, and upside to play on the left. Needs to work some on his technique.

Other options: Anthony Davis (T, Rutgers), Taylor Mays (S, USC).

How will he impact the 2010 Packers?

For the Packers, who re-signed both of their aging tackles during the offseason (Mark Tausher and Chad Clifton, 32 and 33), Williams will provide immediate insurance for an offensive line that struggled through injuries last year. Williams or 2009 fourth-rounder T.J. Lang may also step in to play guard, replacing underperformer Daryn Colledge.

If Williams is taken #23 by the Packers, he would be the 1st OT taken in the first round by the Packers since 1997, when they selected Ross Verba #30 overall.  He would also be the 1st OT taken in the first round from Oklahoma since 2005, when Jamaal Brown was taken #13 overall by the Saints.

I like it too

Another position I wonder if they will glance at is CB. Their stars are getting older than the hills (33 and 35 for Charles Woodson and Al Harris respectively). I wonder if they have the next gen. ready to step in when they retire.

Great pick

But I highly doubt Trent lasts this long

Respond to the other image, first.

One of the images from last season to which you refer is
“the Packers’ secondary” (not over hyped; just down to third and fourth stringers at the starting CB slot opposite C. Woodson and at the nickel back position, as well as having a seventh-round rookie as an injury replacement in front of them at LOLB) “being torched by Kurt Warner in Arizona.”
The key issue implied there is a need for the Packers to shore up their pass defense against high-performance QBs, and that is correct.
Well, bracketismyboy, the best way for the Packers to do that is to add a bookend pass-rushing OLB to play opposite Clay Matthews III, so as to get more pressure on the QBs more quickly, thus not allowing them time to sit back and take all day waiting for a receiver to get open, as Warner, Ben Roethlisberger and ol’ Bertt did last year.
IMO, TCU hybrid DE/OLB Jerry Hughes, who is still available at pick #23 in this mock draft, and whose stock has been rising, is the best choice to fill that role and is the player the Packers should draft in that slot.

I think Davis would be a better option here.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Butler University is (finally) in the Final Four for the first time in school history. While I knew that they could do it, I am still stunned. Only need 2 more wins to finish the job! Go Butler!
