With the 24th Pick in the 2010 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select...

Jerry Hughes, OLB - TCU

Pick made by TehRhino:

Hughes might be considered a bit of a reach with players like Everson Griffen and Sergio Kindle still on the board, but Hughes gets the nod over those guys with his work ethic and coverage skills (essential for covering divisional foes Chris Cooley and Jason Witten). Hughes played DE for TCU, but has experience at linebacker from his high school days, and has repeatedly told teams that he's willing to play anywhere on the field. Even if he is a reach, trading down and getting Hughes in the early to middle second round would be a major gamble for the Eagles, considering the Colts could make great use of him as an end in the 4-3.

Hughes is 6'2, 255, which puts him on the larger end of Philly's current linebacking corps. He also possesses good speed, better than the 4.69 he posted at the Combine. That speed and size will make him a versatile addition to the Eagles' defense, which has historically relied on an unpredictable pass rush.

How will he impact the 2010 Eagles?

Hughes should win the starting weakside linebacker position vacated by Will Witherspoon, and while his sack totals may not win him any postseason accolades in 2010, he'll cement his position as a starter for years to come.

If Hughes is taken #24 by the Eagles, he would be the 1st LB taken in the first round by the Eagles since 1979, when they selected Jerry Robinson #21 overall.  He would also be only the 2nd first round pick from TCU since 1971 (LaDainian Tomlinson).

Correct pick. Fills a positional need with the best player available

OK pick, but a bit of a reach for Hughes

OK pick, but other positions could have been addressed first

Wrong pick. Way too early for Hughes.
